Liver expression of steroid hormones and Apolipoprotein D receptors in hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM: To evaluate the tissular expression of Androgen (A), Estrogen (E) and Progesterone (Pg) receptors, and Apolipoprotein D (ApoD), in liver tumors from resected hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases in order to assess their possible relationship to prognosis. METHODs: We performed an immunohistochemical study using tissue microarrays (containing more than 260 cancer specimens, from 31 HCC patients and controls) to determine the presence of specif ic antibodies against AR, ER, PgR and ApoD, correlating their findings with several clinico-pathological and biological variables. The staining results were categorized using a semi-quantitive score based on their intensity, and the percentage of immunostained cells was measured. REsULTs: A total of 21 liver tumors (67.7%) were positive for AR; 16 (51.6%) for ER; 26 (83.9%) for PgR and 12 (38.7%) stained for ApoD. We have found a wide variability in the immunostaining score values for each protein, with a median (range) of 11.5 (11.5-229.5) for AR; 11.1 (8.5-65) for ER; 14.2 (4-61) for PgR; and 37.7 (13.8-81.1) for ApoD. A history of heavy ethanol consumption, correlated positively with AR and PgR and negatively with ER status. HCV chronic infection also correlated positively with AR and PgR status. However, the presence of ApoD immunostaining did not correlate with any of these variables. Tumors with a positive immuno-staining for PgR showed a better prognosis. CONCLUsION: Our results indicate a moderate clinical value of the steroid receptor status in HCC, emphasizing the need to perform further studies in order to evaluate the possible role of new hormonal-based therapies.

Primary canalicular bile undergoes a process of fluidization and alkalinization along the biliary tract that is influenced by several factors including hormones, innervation/neuropeptides, and biliary constituents. The excretion of bicarbonate at both the canaliculi and the bile ducts is an important contributor to the generation of the so-called bile-salt independent flow. Bicarbonate is secreted from hepatocytes and cholangiocytes through parallel mechanisms which involve chloride efflux through activation of Cl- channels, and further bicarbonate secretion via AE2/sLC4A2-mediated Cl-/HCO3- exchange. Glucagon and secretin are two relevant hormones which seem to act very similarly in their target cells （hepatocytes for the former and cholangiocytes for the latter）. These hormones interact with their specific G protein-coupled receptors, causing increases in intracellular levels of cAMP and activation of cAMP-dependent Cl- and HCO3- secretory mechanisms. Both hepatocytes and cholangiocytes appear to have cAMP-responsive intracellular vesicles in which AE2/sLC4A2 colocalizes with cell specific Cl- channels （CfTR in cholangiocytes and not yet determined in hepatocytes） and aquaporins （AQP8 in hepatocytes and AQP1 in cholangiocytes）, cAMP-induced coordinated trafficking of these vesicles to either canalicular or cholangiocyte lumenal membranes and further exocytosis results in increased osmotic forces and passive movement of water with net bicarbonate-rich hydrocholeresis.

Long-term outcome of chronic hepatitis C patients with sustained virological response to peginterferon plus ribavirin

AIM: To assess the clinical, biochemical and virological long-term outcome in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients with a sustained virological response (sVR) after peginterferon (PEG-IfN) plus ribavirin combination therapy. METHODs: One hundred and fifty three patients with a sVR after treatment with PEG-IfN plus ribavirin were included in a 5-year follow-up study in a single spanish center, based on standard clinical practice. Clinical anamnesis, biochemical analysis, hepatitis C virus RNA and alpha-fetoprotein measurement, ultrasonography and transient elastography were performed annually. REsULTs: The mean follow-up period of the 153 patients was 76 ± 13 mo after they obtained a sVR. five patients (3.26%) presented with cirrhosis before treatment and 116 (75.8%) had genotype 1. No patient showed evidence of hepatic decompensation. One patient (0.65%) developed a hepatocellular carcinoma at month 30 after achieving sVR. There were no virological relapses during this follow-up period. Persistently elevated alanine aminotransferase was found in only one patient (0.65%). At the end of the 5-year follow-up, the mean value of transient elastography was 7 ± 4.3 kPa (f1). There were no deaths and no other tumors. CONCLUsION: The long-term outcome of 153 CHC patients with sVR to PEG-IfN plus ribavirin was good. No evidence of a virological relapse was seen. One patient (0.65%) developed a hepatocellular carcinoma.

Glaucoma is one of the world’s most frequent visual impairment causes and leads to selective damage to retinal ganglion cells and their *** glaucoma’s most accepted risk factor is increased intraocular pressure(IOP),the mechanisms behind the disease have not been fully *** date,IOP lowering remains the gold standard;however,glaucoma patients may still lose vision regardless of effective IOP ***,the exclusive IOP control apparently is not enough to stop the disease progression,and developing new resources to protect the retina and optic nerve against glaucoma is a goal of vast clinical *** pharmacological treatments,environmental conditions have been shown to prevent neurodegeneration in the central nervous *** this review,we discuss current concepts on key pathogenic mechanisms involved in glaucoma,the effect of enriched environment on these mechanisms in different experimental models,as well as recent evidence supporting the preventive and therapeutic effect of enriched environment exposure against experimental glaucomatous ***,we postulate that stimulating vision may become a non-invasive and rehabilitative therapy that could be eventually translated to the human disease,preventing glaucoma-induced terrible sequelae resulting in permanent visual disability.

During the last century,the coyote(Canis latrans)has increased its distribution in Central *** the 1980s,it had not been recorded in *** records show that coyotes have crossed the Panama Canal,indicating that continues to expand;therefore,there is a possibility that it will reach northern south *** objectives were to identify potential coyote colonization routes to south America,and the variables that favor its *** hypothesized that habitat fragmentation benefits coyote *** applied 7 algorithms to model the potential distribution of the coyote,using 196 presence records and 12 *** models with better performance were used to generate a consensus *** our consensus model and the areas with highest probability of presence,a potential colonization route was generated between Central America and northern south *** route lies through southern Costa Rica,along the Pacific coast of Panama to the south,to the Andean mountains in northern *** variables that explained potential coyote distribution were human population density,altitude,and percentage of crops with positive influence,and tropical broadleaf forests with negative *** results indicate that human activities and deforestation are related to coyote distribution *** can be implemented within the identified route to improve environmental management,in order to avoid the presence of the coyote in the ecosystems of northern south America.

steels with ultrafine grains （lower than 5 μm）, which usually known as ultrafine ferrite or ultrafine grained materials, are presently the object of intense research, because of the improvement in resistance and fracture toughness they may reach compared to conventional steels （with grain sizes above this value）. It is shown that the forenamed steels designated in the Euronorm EN 10149-2, which are manufactured by advanced techniques of controlled rolling and mainly used in automotive industry, have an ultrafine grain size in the range of 2.5 to 3.5 μm, and with elastic yield stresses higher than 400 MPa. Based on the Morrison-Miller criterion, it is shown that values of the strain-hardening coefficient lower than 0.08 would make the industrial application of these steels unfeasible.

Background:The exclusion of tourist species from samples is important to avoid bias in community ***,in practice,this is a very difficult *** commonly used methods by researchers,when the habitat of the species is not known,have several shortcomings:first,they exclude not only pseudo-rare species but also genuinely rare species;second,the results obtained with those methods depend on the abundance of the sampling;and third,they follow very subjective *** aims of this study were:(i)to propose a methodology to detect and exclude habitat-tourist species from the database used to carry out analyses in community ecology studies,(ii)to evaluate how the presence of habitat-tourist species affects the richness estimates,and(iii)to assess the effect of including juvenile spiders in the detection of tourist species and the effect of removing them from the richness ***:When the adult+juvenile dataset was considered,twenty-one habitat-tourist species were detected:8 in forest foliage,11 in forest leaf litter,and 2 in *** habitat-tourist species were considered with this dataset,richness overestimation was significant in foliage and in leaf litter,and the final slopes of the richness estimation curves were significantly steeper in leaf *** only the adult dataset was considered,eight habitat-tourist species were detected:3 in forest foliage,4 in forest leaf litter,and just one in *** inclusion of habitat-tourist species in this dataset showed an overestimation of richness,but this was not ***:The proposed methodology contributes to solving the problem of tourist species,which was recognized as one of the great problems in biodiversity *** study showed that common estimators overestimate species richness when habitat-tourist species are included,leading to erroneous ***,this research showed that the inclusion of juveniles(***)could improve the analysis outputs be
