Ballistic design and testing of a composite armour reinforced by CNTs suitable for armoured vehicles

This paper is investigating the use of composite armour reinforced by nanomaterials, for the protection of light armoured(LAV) and medium armoured military vehicles(MAV), and the interaction between the composite materials and high-performance ballistic projectiles. Four armour materials, consisted of front hybrid fibre reinforced polymer cover layer, ceramic strike-face, fibre reinforced polymer intermediate layer and the metal matrix composite reinforced backplate, were manufactured and assembled by adhesive technology. The proposed laminated protection system is suitable for armoured ground vehicles;however, it could be used as armour on ground, air and naval platforms. The design of the protection system, including material selection and thickness, was elaborated depending on the performance requirements of Level 4 + STANAG 4569 military standard(projectile 14.5 mm × 114 mm API B32) and especially on a design philosophy which is analysed with the specifications. The backplate of this new composite is a hybrid material of Metal Matrix Composite(MMC) reinforced with carbon nanotubes(CNTs), manufactured with the use of powder metallurgy technique. The composite backplate material was morphologically, mechanically and chemically analysed. Results show that all plates are presenting high mechanical properties and ballistic characteristics, compared to commonly used armour plates. Real military ballistic tests according to AEP-STANAG 4569 were carried out for the total composite armour systems. After the ballistic tests, AA2024-CNT3 showed the best protection results, compared with the other plates(AA2024-CNT1 and AA2024-CNT2), with the projectile being unable to fully penetrate the composite plate.

Additive manufacturing(AM)has revolutionized the design and manufacturing of patient-specific,three-dimensional(3d),complex porous structures known as scaffolds for tissue engineering *** use of advanced image acquisition techniques,image processing,and computer-aided design methods has enabled the precise design and additive manufacturing of anatomically correct and patient-specific implants and ***,these sophisticated techniques can be timeconsuming,labor-intensive,and ***,the necessary imaging and manufacturing equipment may not be readily available when urgent treatment is needed for trauma *** this study,a novel design and AM methods are proposed for the development of modular and customizable scaffold blocks that can be adapted to fit the bone defect area of a *** modular scaffold blocks can be combined to quickly form any patient-specific scaffold directly from two-dimensional(2d)medical images when the surgeon lacks access to a 3d printer or cannot wait for lengthy 3d imaging,modeling,and 3d printing during *** proposed method begins with developing a bone surface-modeling algorithm that reconstructs a model of the patient’s bone from 2d medical image measurements without the need for expensive 3d medical imaging or *** algorithm can generate both patient-specific and average bone ***,a biomimetic continuous path planning method is developed for the additive manufacturing of scaffolds,allowing porous scaffold blocks with the desired biomechanical properties to be manufactured directly from 2d data or *** algorithms are implemented,and the designed scaffold blocks are 3d printed using an extrusion-based AM *** and instructions are also provided to assist surgeons in assembling scaffold blocks for the self-repair of patient-specific large bone defects.

To the Editor:We read with considerable interest the paper of Shree Harini and Ezhilarasan,summarizing the possible pathophysiological connections between the modulators of canonical Wnt/β-catenin pathway and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLd)[1].The au-thors supported with evidence that Wnt/β-catenin signaling contributes to hepatic homeostasis by regulating hepatic development,regeneration and *** also supported that dysregula-tion of modulators of Wnt/β-catenin signaling is not only impli-cated in the development of NAFLd,but also in its progression to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH),hepatic fibrosis and hepato-cellular carcinoma(HCC).

NORMA:The Network Makeup Artist—A Web Tool for Network Annotation Visualization

The Network Makeup Artist(NORMA) is a web tool for interactive network annotation visualization and topological analysis, able to handle multiple networks and annotations simultaneously. Precalculated annotations(e.g., Gene Ontology, Pathway enrichment, community detection,or clustering results) can be uploaded and visualized in a network, either as colored pie-chart nodes or as color-filled areas in a 2d/3d Venn-diagram-like style. In the case where no annotation exists,algorithms for automated community detection are offered. Users can adjust the network views using standard layout algorithms or allow NORMA to slightly modify them for visually better group separation. Once a network view is set, users can interactively select and highlight any group of interest in order to generate publication-ready figures. Briefy, with NORMA, users can encode three types of information simultaneously. These are 1) the network, 2) the communities or annotations of interest, and 3) node categories or expression values. Finally, NORMA offers basic topological analysis and direct topological comparison across any of the selected networks. Environmental Ethics and Linkola＇s Ecofascism： An Ethics Beyond Humanism

Ecofascism as a tradition in Environmental Ethics seems to burgeoning with potential. The roots of Ecofascism can be traced back to the German Romantic School, to the Wagnerian narration of the Nibelungen saga, to the works of Fichte and Herder and, finally, to the so-called volkisch movement. Those who take pride in describing themselves as ecofascists grosso modo tend to prioritize the moral value of the ecosphere, while, at the same time, they almost entirely devalue species and individuals. Additionally, these ecofascists are eager to reject democracy, the idea of progress in its entirety, as well as industrialization and urbanization. They also seem to be hostile towards individual autonomy and free will. In this short essay I will present and discuss Kaarlo Pentti Linkola＇s approach to environmental ethics, one that could be well described as the epitome of Ecofascism. I will argue that his arguments are neither sound nor documented, and I will conclude that Linkola＇s overall approach is, in my view, contrary to the purpose as well as to the very essence of morality.

Turbulent structure in uniform inclined open channel flow over different rough porous beds

In this study the effects of the different rough porous beds in an open inclined channel are studied experimentally for impermeable and permeable porous *** the simulation of porous bed two different types of permeable bed with the same thickness(s’ = 3 cm) and the same porosity ε=0.70 are used:(a) porous filters and(b) gravel *** experiments were used for the calculation of turbulent velocity *** of velocity were taken for inclined channel for three different slopes(S=-0.002,S=-0.004 and S=-0.006) and for five different flow depths(h=5 cm,7 cm,9 cm,11 cm and 13 cm).The total discharge Q varies from 0.78 to 1.31 1/*** measurements were obtained using a two-dimensional(2d) Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV).The total discharge was estimated using a calibrated venture *** showed that the presence of rough porous bed in inclined open channels influence significantly the turbulent characteristics of the flow in comparison with impermeable open channels with the same slopes.

The Impact of Climate Change on the Stratification of Coastal Areas of the Euboean Gulf and the diffusion of Urban Wastewater in Them

Hydrodynamic circulation in a marine environment, characterized by the influence of strong tides, atmospheric loading and bathymetry, is a complex phenomenon. The physical and hydrodynamic characteristics of this flow are absolutely crucial for the vertical mixing of the sea masses and consequently for the mixing of their physico-chemical parameters, such as nutrients and oxygen, as well as for the diffusion and dispersion of passive pollutants, the recharge of the waters and the general environmental situation. This paper examines the effect of a future increase in mean air temperature on the water column stratification of coastal areas of interest, which are subject to the above loadings and receive treated urban wastewater, and how this increase could affect their diffusion and mixing of conservative pollutants contained therein.

determination of particle exchange rates at over-flow weirs in horizontal fluidised beds by particle tracking velocimetry

Residence time distributions （RTds） in horizontal fluidised beds have a huge effect on solid product properties and are infuenced by the internal design of the apparatus, e.g. the separation into different compartments by weirs. Weirs can be passed in or against the overall solid transport direction, with the back-flow resulting in axial dispersion, which is a measure of the spread of the RTd. Therefore, the ratio of exchange rates at weirs under different fluidisation conditions provides information on axial dispersion. In this work, a methodology based on particle tracking velocimetry is presented to obtain information on the exchange rates of particles at weirs in horizontal fluidised beds. The internal recirculation is studied for over-flow weirs with respect to different fluidisation conditions, providing a first step towards determining the effects of weirs and fluidisation conditions on axial dispersion and RTds in horizontal fluidised beds.

The experimental characterization of particle dynamics in fluidized beds is of great importance in fostering an understanding of solid phase motion and its effect on particle properties in granulation processes, Commonly used techniques such as particle image velocimetry rely on the cross-correlation of illumination intensity and averaging procedures. It is not possible to obtain single particle velocities with such techniques. Moreover, the estimated velocities may not accurately represent the local particle velocities in regions with high velocity gradients. Consequently, there is a need for devices and methods that are capable of acquiring individual particle velocities. This paper describes how particle tracking velocimetry can be adapted to dense particulate flows. The approach presented in this paper couples high-speed imaging with an innovative segmentation algorithm for particle detection, and employs the Voronoi method to solve the assignment problem usually encountered in densely seeded fows. Lagrangian particle tracks are obtained as primary information, and these serve as the basis for calculating sophisticated quantities such as the solid-phase flow field, granular temperature, and solid volume fraction. We show that the consistency of individual trajectories is sufficient to recognize collision events.
