Confounding response of macrofauna from a confluence of impacts: brine and sewage pollution

Throughout the shores of the world, a confluence of different sources of pollution is common, e.g., through outlets releasing brine, industrial, and domestic sewage. In this study, we assessed whether a combined disposal of domestic sewage and brine altered the patterns of abundance and assemblage structure of sub- tidal macrofauna inhabiting sandy seabeds on the south coast of Gran Canaria （Canary Islands, NE Atlantic Ocean）. Samples were collected in two surveys （may 2008 and January 2009） at three distances （0, 15, and 30 m） away from the discharge point. macrofaunal abundances showed different patterns with varying proximity from the disposal point in the two surveys. In may 2008, lower abundances were observed at 0 m （53.89±46.82 ind.） than at 15 m （120±91.7 ind.） and 30 m （283.89±189.33 ind.） away from the dis- posal point. In January 2009, however, higher abundances were observed at 0 m （131.33±58.69 ind.） than at 30 m （100±24.44 ind.） and 15 m （84.78±58.39 ind.） away from the disposal point. Significant differ- ences in macrofaunal assemblage structure were found with varying proximity from the discharge point in both surveys. The effect of proximity from the disposal point was confounded by changes in sedimen- tary composition between surveys, which contributed to explain differences in macrofaunal abundances and assemblage structure with varying proximity from the discharge point. As a result, confounding driver- s of macrofaunal assemblage structure, here, changes in sediment composition, accounted for changes in macrofaunal abundances and assemblage structure with varying proximity from a combined disposal point of brine and sewage.

The formation of amyloid fibrils from soluble proteins is a common form of self-assembly phenomenon that has fundamental connections with biological functions and human *** was converted from its soluble native state into highly organized amyloid *** treatment was used to break amyloid fibrils to fibrillar fragments–*** force microscopy and fluorescence microscopy was employed to characterize the morphology of the amyloid assemblies and neural cells–amyloid *** results demonstrate that prefibrillar intermediated and their mixture with proteins exhibit toxicity,although native proteins and fibrils appear to have no effect on number of *** findings confirm that innocuous hen lysozyme can be engineered to produce both cytotoxic fibrillar fragments and non-toxic mature amyloid *** work further strengthens the claim that amyloid conformation,and not the identity of the protein,is key to cellular toxicity and the underlying specific cell death mechanism.

This study contributes with the first data on physical and taxonomical structure of macrofaunal assemblages of maerl beds from the Canary Islands. maerl beds and Cymodocea nodosa meadows of the Canary Islands are considered biodiversity hot-spots in terms of taxonomic and functional biodiversity with a broad geographical and depth ranges. The authors have studied the structure of the macrofaunal assemblages on different habitat types （Cymodocea, Caulerpa, sabellid field, garden eel and maerl beds）. Samples were taken at a range of depths between 14 and 46 m. Correlations were performed among abiotic variables （granulometry, organic matter, nitrogen and phosphates） and the most abundant taxa. Similarity analysis was performed to explore the patchiness of seabeds at a local scale. Significant differences were found in macrofaunal assemblages among seabed types, with highest abundances and lowest biodiversity in sabellid fields, where the sabellid Bispira viola dominated. The polychaetes Aponuphis bilineata and Chone filicauda and the mollusc Turritella brochii were the most abundant taxa on maerl beds. The mosaic of granulometric conditions would explain the associated macroinfaunal community structure and contribute to the creation of diversity on these relatively well preserved seabeds at a local scale.

AIm: To measure biochemical parameters in stomach biopsies and test their suitability as diagnostic biomarkers for gastritis and precancerous ***: Biopsies were obtained from the stomachs of two groups of patients(n = 40) undergoing fiberoptic endoscopy due to upper gastrointestinal symptoms. In the first group(n = 17), only the corpus region was examined. Biopsies were processed for microscopic examination and measurement of mitochondrial O2 consumption(cellular respiration), cellular adenosine triphosphate(ATP), glutathione(GSH), and caspase activity. In the second group of patients(n = 23), both corpus and antral regions were studied. Some biopsies were processed for microscopic examination, while the others were used for measurements of cellular respiration and GSH ***: microscopic examinations of gastric corpus biopsies from 17 patients revealed normal mucosae in 8 patients, superficial gastritis in 7 patients, and chronic atrophic gastritis in 1 patient. In patients with normal histology, the rate(mean ± SD) of cellular respiration was 0.17 ± 0.02 μmol/L O2 min-1 mg-1, ATP content was 487 ± 493 pmol/mg, and GSH was 469 ± 98 pmol/mg. Caspase activity was detected in 3 out of 8 specimens. The values of ATP and caspase activity were highly variable. The presence of superficial gastritis had insignificant effects on the measured biomarkers. In the patient with atrophic gastritis, cellular respiration was high andATP was relatively low, suggesting uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation. In the second cohort of patients, the examined biopsies showed either normal or superficial gastritis. The rate of cellular respiration(O2. μmol/L min-1 mg-1) was slightly higher in the corpus than the antrum(0.18 ± 0.05 vs 0.15 ± 0.04, P = 0.019). The value of GSH was about the same in both tissues(310 ± 135 vs 322 ± 155, P = 0.692).CONCLUSION: The corpus mucosa was metabolically more active than the antrum tissue. Treatment of esophagogastric junction carcinoma:An unsolved debate

The incidence of esophagogastric junction adenocarcinoma(AEG) is increasing worldwide. Barrett's esophagus(BE) associated with dysplasia is the main risk factor for the development of cancer. Currently, screening programs to individuate and eradicate BE represent the best way to reduce AEG cancer. Several endoscopic approaches are here discussed. Surgicalstrategies for different types of AEG cancer are now fairly standardized, and multidisciplinary strategies u s i n g c h e m o t h e ra py o r c h e m o ra d i o t h e ra py m ay improve the outcome of these patients. Here we briefly discuss the keypoints, main topics, and critical issues, according to accumulating evidence and taking into account our own experience.

Legume rhizobium symbiosis is initiated upon perception of bacterial secreted lipo-chitooligosaccharides （LCOs）. Perception of these signals by the plant initiates a signaling cascade that leads to nodule formation. Several studies have implicated a function for cytokinin in this process. However, whether cytokinin accu- mulation and subsequent signaling are an integral part of rhizobium LCO signaling remains elusive. Here, we show that cytokinin signaling is required for the majority of transcriptional changes induced by rhizo- bium LCOs. In addition, we demonstrate that several cytokinins accumulate in the root susceptible zone 3 h after rhizobium LCO application, including the biologically most active cytokinins, trans-zeatin and iso- pentenyl adenine. These responses are dependent on calcium- and calmodulin-dependent protein kinase （CCamK）, a key protein in rhizobial LCO-induced signaling. Analysis of the ethylene-insensitive mtein21 mtsickle mutant showed that LCO-induced cytokinin accumulation is negatively regulated by ethylene. Together with transcriptional induction of ethylene biosynthesis genes, it suggests a feedback loop negatively regulating LCO signaling and subsequent cytokinin accumulation. We argue that cytokinin accumulation is a key step in the pathway leading to nodule organogenesis and that this is tightly controlled by feedback loops.
