Influence of temperature and pressure during thermoforming of softwood pulp

In this study,the influence of thermoforming conditions on the resulting material properties was investigated,which aimed at developing advanced wood-fiber-based materials for the replacement of fossil *** bleached softwood pulps were studied,i.e.,northern bleached softwood Kraft pulp(NBSK)and chemi-thermomechanical softwood pulp(CTmP).The thermoforming conditions were varied between 2–100 mPa and 150–200℃,while pressing sheets of 500 g/m^(2)for 10 min to represent thin-walled packaging more *** our results showed,the temperature had a more pronounced effect on the CTmP substrates than on the Kraft *** was explained by the greater abundance of lignin and hemicelluloses,while fibrillar dimensions and the fines content may play a role in ***,the CTmP exhibited an optimum in terms of tensile strength at intermediate thermoforming *** effect was attributed to two counteracting effects:1)Improved fiber adhesion due to enhanced densification,and 2)embrittlement caused by the loss of *** temperatures likely softened the lignin,enabling fiber collapse and a tighter *** the Kraft substrates,the tensile strength increased linearly with *** pulps showed reduced wetting at elevated thermoforming temperature and pressure,which was attributed to hornification and densification ***,the effect of temperature was again more pronounced for CTmP than for the Kraft *** was concluded that the thermoforming temperature and pressure strongly affected the properties of the final *** chemical composition of the pulps will distinctly affect their response to thermoforming,which could be useful for tailoring cellulose-based replacements for packaging products.

Tensile and fracture properties of an mg-RE-Zn alloy at elevated temperatures

magnesium alloy EZ10 （mg-RE-Zn） was deformed in tension at temperatures from 20 up to 520℃. A rapid decrease of the yield and tensile strength with temperature was observed at temperatures higher than 300 ℃. On the other hand, ductility of sam-ples rapidly increased in the same temperature range. Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy was used to reveal the rea-son for these behaviours. Intermetallic particles in grain boundaries are responsible for excellent mechanical properties at lower tem-peratures. Diffusional processes occurring at temperatures higher than 300 ℃ significantly influenced the deformation mechanism as well as the fracture character.

The importance of glutathione and phytochelatins on the selenite and arsenate detoxification in Arabidopsis thaliana

We investigated the role of glutathione（GSH） and phytochelatins（PCs） on the detoxification of selenite using Arabidopsis thaliana. The wild-type（WT） of Arabidopsis thaliana and its mutants（glutathione deficient Cad 2–1 and phytochelatins deficient Cad 1–3） were separately exposed to varying concentrations of selenite and arsenate and jointly to both toxicants to determine their sensitivities. The results of the study revealed that, the mutants were about 20-fold more sensitive to arsenate than the WT, an indication that the GSH and PCs affect arsenate detoxification. On the contrary, the WT and both mutants showed a similar level of sensitivity to selenite, an indication that the GSH and PCs do not significantly affect selenite detoxification. However, the WT is about 8 times more sensitive to selenite than to arsenate, and the mutants were more resistant to selenite than arsenate by a factor of 2. This could not be explained by the accumulation of both elements in roots and shoots in exposure experiments. The co-exposure of the WT indicates a synergistic effect with regards to toxicity since selenite did not induce PCs but arsenic and selenium compete in their PC binding as revealed by speciation analysis of the root extracts using HPLC–ICP–mS/ESI–mS. In the absence of PCs an antagonistic effect has been detected which might suggest indirectly that the formation of Se glutathione complex prevent the formation of detrimental selenopeptides. This study, therefore, revealed that PC and GSH have only a subordinate role in the detoxification of selenite.

Outcome after early mobilization following hip reconstruction in children with developmental hip dysplasia and luxation

Comparison of modelled-and remote sensing-derived daily snow line altitudes at Ulugh muztagh,northern Tibetan Plateau

The ice cap Ulugh muztagh in the central Kunlun Shan at the northern fringe of the Tibetan Plateau is a very isolated region with arid cold conditions. No observational, meteorological or glaciological ground truth data is available. Using the moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(mODIS) Level 1 radiance Swath Data(mOD02QKm) with a spatial resolution of 250 m, transient snow lines during the months of July to September in 2001 to 2014 are derived. Results are used to calibrate the physical based Coupled Snowpack and Ice surface energy and mass balance model(COSImA). The model runs on a representative detail region of Ulugh muztagh(Um) on a digital elevation model with the same spatial resolution as the mODIS bands. In the absence of field observations, the model is driven solely by dynamically downscaled global analysis data from the High Asia Refined analysis(HAR). We compare remote sensing derived and modelled mean regional transient snow line altitudes in the course of consecutive summer seasons in 2008 to 2010. The resulting snow line altitude(SLA) and annual equilibrium line altitude(ELA) proxy of both methods coincide very well in their interannual variability in accordance with interannual variability of climatic conditions. Since SLAs of both methods do notconsistently agree on a daily basis a usage of remote sensing derived SLAs for model calibration in the absence of field observation data is only limitedly feasible for daily analysis. ELA approximation using the highest SLA at the end of ablation period may not be applied to Um because the negative winter mass balance(mB) is not reflected in the summer SLA. The study reveals moderate negative mB for Um throughout the modelling period. The mean regional mB of Um accounts for-523±410 mm w.e. a-1 in the modelling period. Hence Um seems not to belong to the area of the ‘Karakorum anomaly' comprising a region of positive mass balances in recent years which has its centre presumably in the Western Kunlu

A Biobank for Long-term and Sustainable Research in the Field of Congenital Heart Disease in Germany

Congenital heart disease （CHD） is the most fi＇equent birth defect （0.8% 1% of all live births）. Due to the advance in prenatal and postnatal early diagnosis and treatment, more than 90% of these patients survive into adulthood today. However, several mid- and long-term morbidi- ties are dominating the follow-up of these patients. Due to the rarity and heterogeneity of the phenotypes of CHD, multicenter registry-based studies are required. The CHD-Biobank was established in 2009 with the aim to collect DNA from patients and their parents （trios） or fi＇om affected families, as well as cardiovascular tissues from patients undergoing corrective heart surgery for cardiovascular malformations. Clinical/phenotype data are matched to the International Paediatric and Congenital Cardiac Code （IPCCC） and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision （ICD-10）. The DNA collection currently comprises samples from approximately 4200 participants with a wide range of CHD phenotypes. The collection covers about 430 trios and 120 families with more than one affected member. The cardiac tissue collection comprises 1143 tissue samples [Yore 556 patients alter open heart surgery. The CHD-Biobank provides a comprehensive basis for research in the field of CHD with high standards of data privacy, IT management, and sample logistics.

Preclinical characterization and validation of a dual-labeled trastuzumab-based imaging agent for diagnosing breast cancer

Objective： The combination of both nuclear and fluorescent reporters provides unique opportunities for noninvasive nuclear imaging with subsequent fluorescence image-guided resection and pathology. Our objective was to synthesize and optimize a dual-labeled trastuzumab-based imaging agent that can be used to validate an optical imaging agent with potential use in identifying tumor metastases in human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 （HER2） positive breast cancer patients. methods： [111In]-DTPA-trastuzumab-IRDye 800 was synthesized by a three-step procedure. Purity, stability, immunoreactivity, internalization and biodistribution were explored in HER2＋ SKBR-3 cells. Biodistribution of [111In]-DTPA-trastuzumab-IRDye 800 was performed in a SKBR-3 xenograft model. Results： [111In]-DTPA-trastuzumab-IRDye 800 demonstrated high purity by both chemical and fluorometric determinations. Both flow cytometry and the Lindmo assay demonstrated a high binding affinity of [111In]-DTPA-trastuzumab-IRDye 800 to HER2-overexpressing cells. The dual-labeled conjugate was stable in PBS, but not in serum after 24 h at 37 ℃. Larger molecules （〉150 kD） were seen after a 24 h-incubation in human serum. Biodistribution studies revealed tumor-specific accumulation of [111In]-DTPA- trastuzumab-IRDye 800 in SKBR-3 tumors, and tumor uptakes at 24 and 48 h were （12.42±1.72）% and （9.96±1.05） %, respectively, following intravenous administration. The tumor-to-muscle ratio was 9.13±1.68 at 24 h, and increased to 12.79±2.13 at 48 h. Liver and kidney showed marked uptake of the dual-labeled imaging agent. Conclusions： [111In]-DTPA-trastuzumab-IRDye 800 is an effective diagnostic biomarker that can be used to validate dual-labeled, molecularly targeted imaging agents and can allow these agents to be translated into clinical practice for identifying HER2＋ lesions.

Validation of a novel animal model for sciatic nerve repair with an adipose-derived stem cell loaded fibrin conduit

Despite the regenerative capabilities of peripheral nerves, severe injuries or neuronal trauma of critical size impose immense hurdles for proper restoration of neuro-muscular circuitry. Autologous nerve grafts improve re-establishment of connectivity, but also comprise substantial donor site morbidity. We developed a rat model which allows the testing of different cell applications, i.e., mesenchymal stem cells, to improve nerve regeneration in vivo. To mimic inaccurate alignment of autologous nerve grafts with the injured nerve, a 20 mm portion of the sciatic nerve was excised, and sutured back in place in reversed direction. To validate the feasibility of our novel model, a fibrin gel conduit containing autologous undifferentiated adipose-derived stem cells was applied around the coaptation sites and compared to autologous nerve grafts. After evaluating sciatic nerve function for 16 weeks postoperatively, animals were sacrificed, and gastrocnemius muscle weight was determined along with morphological parameters（g-ratio, axon density ＆ diameter） of regenerating axons. Interestingly, the addition of undifferentiated adipose-derived stem cells resulted in a significantly improved re-myelination, axon ingrowth and functional outcome, when compared to animals without a cell seeded conduit. The presented model thus displays several intriguing features： it imitates a certain mismatch in size, distribution and orientation of axons within the nerve coaptation site. The fibrin conduit itself allows for an easy application of cells and, as a true critical-size defect model, any observed improvement relates directly to the performed intervention. Since fibrin and adipose-derived stem cells have been approved for human applications, the technique can theoretically be performed on humans. Thus, we suggest that the model is a powerful tool to investigate cell mediated assistance of peripheral nerve regeneration.

The potential application of red mud and soil mixture as additive to the surface layer of a landfill cover system

Red mud, the by-product of aluminum production, has been regarded as a problematic residue all over the world. Its storage involves risks as evidenced by the Ajka red mud spill,an accident in Hungary where the slurry broke free, flooding the surrounding areas. As an immediate remediation measure more than 5 cm thick red mud layer was removed from the flooded soil surface. The removed red mud and soil mixture（RmSm） was transferred into the reservoirs for storage. In this paper the application of RmSm is evaluated in a field study aiming at re-utilizing waste, decreasing cost of waste disposal and providing a value-added product. The purpose was to investigate the applicability of RmSm as surface layer component of landfill cover systems. The field study was carried out in two steps： in lysimeters and in field plots. The RmSm was mixed at ratios ranging between 0 and 50% w/w with low quality subsoil（LQS） originally used as surface layer of an interim landfill cover. The characteristics of the LQS ＋ RmSm mixtures compared to the subsoil（LQS） and the RmSm were determined by physical–chemical, biological and ecotoxicological methods. The addition of RmSm to the subsoil（LQS） at up to 20% did not result any ecotoxic effect, but it increased the water holding capacity. In addition, the microbial substrate utilization became about triple of subsoil（LQS） after 10 months. According to our results the RmSm mixed into subsoil（LQS） at20% w/w dose may be applied as surface layer of landfill cover systems.
