Substructure imaging of heterogeneous nanomaterials with enhanced refractive index contrast by using a functionalized tip in photoinduced force microscopy

The opto-mechanical force response from light-illuminated nanoscale materials has been exploited in many tip-based imaging applications to characterize various heterogeneous *** a force can have two origins:thermal expansion and induced *** thermal expansion reflects the absorption of the material,which enables one to chemically characterize a material at the absorption *** induced dipole interaction reflects the local refractive indices of the material underneath the tip,which is useful to characterize a material in the spectral region where no absorption resonance occurs,as in the infrared(IR)-inactive ***,the dipole force is relatively small,and the contrast is rarely discernible for most organic materials and biomaterials,which only show a small difference in refractive indices for their *** this letter,we demonstrate that refractive index contrast can be greatly enhanced with the assistance of a functionalized *** the enhanced contrast,we can visualize the substructure of heterogeneous biomaterials,such as a polyacrylonitrile-nanocrystalline cellulose(PAN-NCC)*** substructural visualization,we address the issue of the tensile strength of PAN-NCC fibers fabricated by several different mixing *** understanding from the present study will open up a new opportunity to provide enhanced sensitivity for substructure mapping of nanobiomaterials,as well as local field mapping of photonic devices,such as surface polaritons on semiconductors,metals and van der Waals materials.

We,for the first time,report the nanoscopic imaging study of anomalous infrared(IR)phonon enhancement of bilayer graphene,originated from the charge imbalance between the top and bottom layers,resulting in the enhancement of E1u mode of bilayer graphene near 0.2 *** modified the multifrequency atomic force microscope platform to combine photo-induced force microscope with electrostatic/Kelvin probe force microscope constituting a novel hybrid nanoscale optical-electrical force imaging *** enables to observe a correlation between the IR response,doping level,and topographic information of the graphene *** the nanoscale spectroscopic image measurements,we demonstrate that the charge imbalance at the graphene interface can be controlled by chemical(doping effect via Redox mechanism)and mechanical(triboelectric effect by the doped cantilever)***,we can also diagnosis the subsurface cracks on the stacked few-layer graphene at nanoscale,by monitoring the strain-induced IR phonon *** approach provides new insights into the development of graphene-based electronic and photonic devices and their potential applications.

Paclitaxel and curcumin co-bound albumin nanoparticles having antitumor potential to pancreatic cancer

Albumin nanoparticles are considered to be an effective way to load water-insoluble anticancer drugs and target tumors via the gp60-mediated pathway. Herein, we fabricated an albumin nanoparticle formulation for co-loading paclitaxel(PTX) and curcumin(CCM), both of which have prominent anticancer efficacy, via nanoparticle albumin-bound(NabTM) technology using high-pressure homogenization. The PTX/CCM co-bound albumin nanoparticles(PTX/CCM Alb-NPs) had a slightly greater particle size of ~250 nm than that of plain PTX AlbNPs and CCM Alb-NPs(~234 and ~134 nm, respectively), with spherical surface morphology and stable size maintenance. However, the zeta potential of PTX/CCM Alb-NPs(ca.-30 mV)was not significantly different from that of PTX or CCM Alb-NPs. The loaded PTX and CCM were released gradually from the PTX/CCM Alb-NPs over ~24 h(97.7 ± 1.7% and 76.2 ± 0.5%,respectively). Furthermore, PTX/CCM Alb-NPs appeared to be efficiently internalized into Mia Paca-2 cells and exhibited a 71% increased IC50 versus PTX Alb-NPs in terms of cytotoxicity to Mia Paca-2 cells. These results suggest that PTX/CCM Alb-NPs are a new potential anticancer agent for combination therapy.

Purifying behavior of photocatalytic TiO_2 anodized in nitrate ion containing solution

Mesoporous titanium dioxide films were fabricated on titanium plates by micro-arc oxidation *** increase the photocatalytic activity of the films,NH4NO3 was added to the H2SO4 solution,and anodizing was carried out at high voltages using a DC power *** crystal structure,chemical composition,surface morphology and the optical property of the films were investigated by XPS,XRD,UV-VIS spectroscopy and *** photocatalytic activity of the films was evaluated by the decomposition of aniline blue,and the activity of the films for the degradation turned out to be improved by the additives to the electrolyte *** enhanced photocatalytic activity might result from the increased porosity and nitrate ion incorporation into the anodic films by micro arcing,and thereby the TiO2 layer might exhibit an improved absorption property for the visible light.

Formation behavior of anodic TiO_2 nanotubes in fluoride containing electrolytes

TiO2 nanotube layers can be formed with titanium in the electrolytes containing fluoride by electrochemical *** role of fluoride ion,the crystallinity of the anodic oxide,and the chemical state were *** results show the anodic film is composed of oxide and a little amount of *** presence of F- ions leads to chemical dissolution of Ti oxide layer and prevents hydroxide ***,chemical dissolution rate increases with increasing the fluoride content in the range of 0-2%(in mass fraction) because F- ions in electrolyte attack the interface and allow the ions of the electrolyte to easily penetrate into the *** as-anodized TiO2 nanotubes exhibit an amorphous *** treated nanotubes are composed of mixtures of the anatase and rutile phases.

Inspired by erythrocytes that contain oxygen-carrying hemoglobin(Hb)and that exhibit photo-driven activity,we introduce homogenous-sized erythrocyte-like Hb microgel(μGel)systems(5-6μm)that can(i)emit heat,(ii)supply oxygen,and(iii)generate reactive oxygen species(ROS;1O2)in response to near-infrared(NIR)laser *** μGels consist of Hb,bovine serum albumin(BSA),chlorin e6(Ce6)and erbium@lutetium upconverting nanoparticles(UCNPs;~35 nm)that effectively convert 808 nm NIR light to 660 nm visible *** Hb μGels are capable of releasing oxygen to help generate sufficient reactive oxygen species(^(1)O_(2))from UCNPs/Ce6 under severely hypoxic condition upon NIR stimulation for efficient photodynamic ***,the Hb μGels emit heat and increase surface temperature due to NIR light absorption by heme(iron protoporphyrin IX)and display photothermal *** changing the Hb/UCNP/Ce6 ratio and controlling the amount of NIR laser irradiation,it is possible to formulate bespoke Hb μGels with either photothermal or photodynamic activity or both in the context of combined therapeutic *** Hb μGels effectively suppress highly hypoxic 4T1 cell spheroid growth and xenograft mice tumors in vivo.

Surface-phonon-polariton-enhanced photoinduced dipole force for nanoscale infrared imaging

The photoinduced dipole force(Pi DF) is an attractive force arising from the Coulombic interaction between the light-induced dipoles on the illuminated tip and the sample. It shows extreme sample-tip distance and refractive index dependence, which is promising for nanoscale infrared(IR) imaging of ultrathin samples. However, the existence of Pi DF in the mid-IR region has not been experimentally demonstrated due to the coexistence of photoinduced thermal force(Pi TF), typically one to two orders of magnitude higher than Pi DF. In this study, we demonstrate that, with the assistance of surface phonon polaritons, the Pi DF of c-quartz can be enhanced to surpass its Pi TF, enabling a clear observation of Pi DF spectra reflecting the properties of the real part of permittivity. Leveraging the detection of the Pi DF of phonon polaritonic substrate, we propose a strategy to enhance the sensitivity and contrast of photoinduced force responses in transmission images, facilitating the precise differentiation of the heterogeneous distribution of ultrathin samples.

Recently,nanovaccine-based immunotherapy has been robustly investigated due to its potential in governing the immune response and generating long-term protective ***,the presentation of a tumor peptide-major histocompatibility complex to T lymphocytes is still a challenge that needs to be addressed for eliciting potent antitumor *** 1 conventional dendritic cell(cDC1)subset is of particular interest due to its pivotal contribution in the cross-presentation of exogenous antigens to CD8+T ***,the DC-derived nanovaccine(denoted as Si9GM)selectively targets cDC1s with marginal loss of premature antigen release for effective stimulator of interferon genes(STING)-mediated antigen *** marrow dendritic cell(BMDC)-derived membranes,conjugated to cDC1-specific antibody(αCLEC9A)and binding to tumor peptide(OVA257-264),are coated onto dendrimer-like polyethylenimine(PEI)-grafted silica *** molecular weight-cargos(αCLEC9A-OVA257-264 conjugates and 2′3′-cGAMP STING agonists)are loaded in hierarchical center-radial pores that enables lysosome escape for potent antigen-cross presentation and activates interferon type I,***,Si9GM vaccination leads to the upregulation of cytotoxic T cells,a reduction in tumor regulatory T cells(Tregs),M1/M2 macrophage polarization,and immune response that synergizes with αPD-1 immune checkpoint *** nanovaccine fulfills a dual role for both direct T cell activation as an artificial antigen-presenting cell and DC subset maturation,indicating its utility in clinical therapy and precision medicine.

Single-cell and spatial omics:exploring hypothalamic heterogeneity

Elucidating the complex dynamic cellular organization in the hypothalamus is critical for understanding its role in coordinating fundamental body functions. Over the past decade, single-cell and spatial omics technologies have significantly evolved, overcoming initial technical challenges in capturing and analyzing individual cells. These high-throughput omics technologies now offer a remarkable opportunity to comprehend the complex spatiotemporal patterns of transcriptional diversity and cell-type characteristics across the entire hypothalamus. Current single-cell and single-nucleus RNA sequencing methods comprehensively quantify gene expression by exploring distinct phenotypes across various subregions of the hypothalamus. However, single-cell/single-nucleus RNA sequencing requires isolating the cell/nuclei from the tissue, potentially resulting in the loss of spatial information concerning neuronal networks. Spatial transcriptomics methods, by bypassing the cell dissociation, can elucidate the intricate spatial organization of neural networks through their imaging and sequencing technologies. In this review, we highlight the applicative value of single-cell and spatial transcriptomics in exploring the complex molecular-genetic diversity of hypothalamic cell types, driven by recent high-throughput achievements.

Prominent cycling reversibility and kinetics enabled by CaTiO3 protective layer on Zn metal for aqueous Zn-ion batteries

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries （AZIBs） have received considerable attention owing to their various advantages such as safety,low cost,simple battery assembly conditions,and high ionic ***,they still suffer from serious problems,including uncontrollable dendrite growth,corrosion,hydrogen evolution reaction （HER） from water decomposition,electrode passivation,and unexpected *** creation of a uniform artificial nanocrystal layer on the Zn anode surface is a promising strategy for resolving these ***,we propose the use of a perovskite CaTiO3（CTO） protective layer on Zn（CTO@Zn） as a promising approach for improving the performance of *** CTO artificial layer provides an efficient pathway for Zn ion diffusion towards the Zn metal because of the high dielectric constant （εr=180） and ferroelectric characteristics that enable the alignment of dipole moments and redistribute the Zn2+ions in the CTO *** avoiding the direct contact of the Zn anode with the electrolyte solution,the uneven dendrite growth,corrosion,parasitic side reactions,and HER are mitigated,while CTO retains its mechanical and chemical robustness during ***,CTO@Zn demonstrates an improved lifespan in a symmetric cell configuration compared with bare ***@Zn shows steady overpotential （～68 m V） for 1500 h at 1 mA cm-2/0.5 mA h cm-2,excelling bare ***,when paired with the V2O5-C cathode,the CTO@Zn//V2O5-C full battery delivers 148.4 mA h g-1（based on the mass of the cathode） after 300 *** study provides new insights into Zn metal anodes and the development of high-performance AZIBs.
