Trauma outcomes in nonfatal road traffic accidents:a Portuguese medico-legal approach

The objective of this study was to compare the outcomes of nonfatal road traffic accidents by the victims’age group and *** used the Portuguese medico-legal rules for personal injury assessment,in the scope of the Civil Law in that country,which includes a three-dimensional *** was a retrospective study including 667 victims of road traffic accidents aged 3–94 years *** final medico-legal reports all used the Portuguese methodology for personal injury *** were analysed by the victims’age group(children,working-age adults,and older people)and *** traffic accidents were generally serious(ISS mean 9.5),with higher severity in children and older *** most frequent body sequelae were musculoskeletal(64.8%),which were associated with functional and situational *** damage resulted in an average length of impairment of daily life of 199.6 days,171.7 days to return to work,and an average degree of quantum doloris(noneconomic damage related to physical and psychological harm)of 3.7/*** average permanent damage was 7.3/100 points for Permanent Functional Deficit,0.43/3 for Permanent Professional Repercussion,2/7 for Permanent Aesthetic Damage,3.9/7 for Permanent Repercussion on Sexual Activity and 3.2/7 for Permanent Repercussion on Sport and Leisure ***,19%of people became permanently dependent(10.6%needed third-party assistance).The medico-legal methodology used,considering victims’real-life situation,allows a comprehensive *** were several significant differences among the three age groups but none between *** differences and the impact of the more severe cases justify further detailed medico-legal studies in these specific situations on children,older people,and severely injured victims.

In order to highlight the contribution of Literature to the study of Domestic Violence,this essay will reflect on the relevance of some Anglo-American literary works,integrated in the Domestic Gothic or Domestic Noir,a subgenre of the psychological thriller,distinguished by the peculiarity of representing a woman in danger as its main *** family can be the most commonly considered luminous space of harmony,affection and quiet domesticity,but everything can turn upside down whenever this stereotype is reversed *** so-called domestic noir,a new genre popularized in 2013,deals with these dualities,demonstrating that gothic fiction has always been interested in family conflicts and domestic violence in its most varied forms,turning them into sources of terror so relevant to our time.

In this study,the sperm ultrastructure of three species of Idarnes genus was investigated using light and transmission electron *** morphology of the three species was similar to that of most Chalcidoidea,with helicoidally twisted nucleus and *** head region consists of an acrosome and a nucleus;the nucleus-flagellum transition region characterized by the presence of mitochondrial derivatives and the centriolar adjunct;a flagellum region,which includes the axoneme with microtubular arrangement 9+9+2 and two mitochondrial ***,the sperm of these three species exhibit features that discriminate one species from each other:(1)only one species,Idarnes sp.2(carme group)exhibited an extracellular sheath surrounding the anterior portion of the nucleus,which extends to the anterior region of the flagellum,but it did not present filaments;(2)the acrosome in the three species was quite different,Idarnes sp.1 and Idarnes sp.2(carme group)has two compartments(acrosomal and subacrosomal vesicles)while Idarnes sp.3(flavicollis group)has a third compartment(perforatorium);(3)the centriolar adjunct elongated and its location among the mitochondrial derivatives is similar for the three species analyzed;(4)mitochondrial derivatives differ between the species,with triangular(Idarnes sp.1 and sp.3)and elongated or flat shaped(Idarnes sp.2)*** data shows that sperm structure may differ within the same genus and confirms the potential of these cells in phylogenetic and taxonomic analyses in the Chalcidoidea superfamily,as well as in Hymenoptera in general.

Case of acute hepatitis E with concomitant signs of autoimmunity

Sporadic cases of acute viral hepatitis E have been described in developed countries, despite the more common occurrence in endemic areas and developing countries. We present the case of a 58 years old Portuguese female, with no epidemiological relevant factors, admitted with acute hepatitis with positive anti-nuclear antibodies, anti-smooth muscle antibody and high serum gamma globulin (> 1.5 fold increase). Serologies for hepatitis A virus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, hereditary sensory neuropathy and varicella zoster virus were negative. Liver biopsy histology revealed changes compatible with autoimmune hepatitis. Prednisolone and azathioprine was started. She tested positive for immunoglobulin M anti hepatitis E virus (HEV) with detectable viremia by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique. HEV-RNA was confirmed throughRT-PCR in a liver specimen, establishing the diagnosis of acute hepatitis E. Immunosuppression was stopped. She clinically improved, with resolution of laboratory abnormalities. Therefore, we confirmed acute hepatitis E as the diagnosis. We review the literature to elucidate about HEV infection and its autoimmune effects.

Objective To evaluate the efficiency of silymarin(SMN) in modulating metabolic parameters and redox status in rats with type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1 DM).Methods Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan. The diabetic rats were administered with SMN at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg body weight/d for 30 consecutive days. The rats were divided into the following four groups: vehicle control, diabetic(alloxan-treated), DS50(alloxan +50 mg/kg body weight/d of SMN), and DS100(alloxan + 100 mg/kg body weight/d of SMN) groups. The bodyweight and food and water intake were evaluated. After 30 d, the animals were euthanized and the blood was collected for measuring the serum levels of glucose, triacylglycerol(TAG), urea, and creatinine. The liver and pancreas were collected for measuring the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and catalase(CAT), and the levels of carbonylated protein(PC). The pancreas sample was also used for histological *** SMN reduced hepatic(P < 0.001) and pancreatic(P < 0.001) protein damage and creatinine levels(P = 0.0141) in addition to decreasing food(P < 0.001) and water intake(P < 0.001). However,treatment with SMN did not improve beta-cell function or decrease blood glucose levels in diabetic *** SMN improved polyphagia and polydipsia, renal function, and protected the liver and pancreas against protein damage without affecting hyperglycemia in diabetic animals.

MAGNETIC STRIPS TO SIMULATE LAYERED BRITTLE SOLIDS IN CLEAVAGE AND FRACTURE EXPERIMENTS

A characteristic of the fracture and cleavage experiments is that they are usually intrinsically destructive. Cracks do not completely heal in an unstressed system, even in crystals such as mica. Here, we used magnetic solids composed of magnetic strips for the non-destructive cleavage and brittle fracture experiments. Between the magnetic strips materials with different mechanical characteristics can be inserted, such as Teflon or foam strips, to change the mechanical properties of the solid. For the cleavage experiments, we developed an apparatus where parameters such as the main involved force can be measured easily. By inserting flaws, the magnetic solid can be used in dynamic fracture experiments, with the advantages of simulating macroscopically a non-destructive experiment in an easier way, that happen in real materials with much higher velocities. The apparatus and the used magnetic solid may be useful for demonstrations of fractures in classes.
