Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by the Sporothrix schenckii complex. It has three classic clinical variants: fixed, lymphangitic, and systemic. Treatment in most cases has been itraconazole or potassium iodide. The aim of this paper is to communicate an unusual relapsing case treated with IK. We report a 73-year-old woman with lymphangitic sporotrichosis, adequate response to treatment with potassium iodide, and recurrence 15 months after. A molecular test was performed through the amplification of a 331 bp fragment of the calmodulin gene. In both infections, the same specie was isolated. The effects of potassium iodide are briefly discussed, and we conclude that the same treatment can be prescribed, if no side effects are observed.

Interaction Between Heficoverpa zea Damage with Corncob Diseases on Genetically Modified Corn in Sinaloa, México

GM （genetically modified） corn with the CrylAb, mCry3A and Vip3Aa20 protein of Bt （Bacillus thuringiensis） and its respective isoline as control with and without chemical control for corn earworm were used in this research. Fusarium corncob damage was lower on GM corn with （12.5%） and without （25.7%） insecticide treatment as compared with the isoline that had 48.3% and 83.1% of damaged corncobs with and without chemical control, respectively. Corn smut cob damage was also lower on GM corn with （3.2%） and without （6.3%） insect control compared with 15.5% and 49.7% damage with and without insecticide treatment, respectively. Fusarium sp. corncob rot was also lower on GM corn with 5.7% and 9.5% whereas a 24.6% and 63% rot was observed on the isoline with and without insecticide control, respectively. Ustilago maydis severity was also lower on Bt corn finding 0.07% and 0.25% damage on treatments with and without insect control as compared with the isoline that showed an 11.6% and a 41.4% smut rot with and without insecticide treatment, respectively. The authors conclude that GM corn resistant to Helicoverpa zea prevents damage by the pest, eliminating the entrance pathway for Fusarium sp. and Ustilago maydis.

Medication reconciliation is priority in safety. Between 54% and 67% of hospitalized patients have at least one unintended discrepancies (UDs) between pharmacological treatment of a hospital inpatient and treatment that they were previously taking at home. Quasi-experimental pre-post study performed. The objective is to assess the impact of an intervention aimed at decreasing UDs between medication prescribed on admission and patient’s regular treatment. Patients who were hospitalised for more than 24 hours and were undergoing treatment prior to admission which involved taking three or more medicines were included. The number of patients included was 331 and 3781 medicines were reconciled. The incidence of UDs decreased significantly from 7.24% to 4.18%. Omission was the most common UD, with a significant decrease from 5.8% to 3.4%. Respect to clinical impact, we observed that error type C (error reached patient without causing harm) predominates, how- ever, experienced a statistically significant decrease from 5.3% to 2.4%.

The ability of sea turtle hatchlings to find the seashore soon after hatching is thought to be exclusively dependent upon visual information. Target-oriented movements in most vertebrates, however, relay on combining information gathered through different sensory systems. Hence, in this work, we investigated whether olfactory and/or magnetic information might complement visual cues during hatchling’s seaward crawling. Acute olfactory deprivation and distorted magnetic sensation in visually competent hatchlings resulted in a scattering of seaward crawling routes among cardinal points, some of them being different from those strongly preferred by control hatchlings. In addition, blindfolded hatchlings also displayed a striking misrouting while crawling on the beach surface in spite of having intact olfactory and magnetic senses. Together these results support the notion that visual information is crucial for seaward crawling, but also that olfactory and magnetic information complement visual cues when turtle hatchlings display this behavior. Hence, the present observations suggest that multisensory cues are used by turtle hatchlings while crawling towards the sea. This work also has important implications on the design of species conservation measures and policies. In the near future, efforts must be made to identify and preserve the local natural sources of odors and magnetic cues, in addition to preventing the perturbing effects of artificial lighting on adult and hatchling turtle crawling behavior.

Five patients with small-fibre neuropathy characterized by temperature-dependent spontaneous pain, hyperalgesia/allodynia and signs of neurogenic inflammation were studied clinically and thermographically, and by microneurography. Thermography revealed hyperthermia confined to painful and hyperalgesic skin of distal extremities, in absence of sympathetic vasomotor denervation. Quantitative sensory testing documented either reduced thresholds or increased suprathreshold magnitude for heat pain. Microneurography identified 13 primary cutaneous C-nocicep- tors generating abnormal impulses in response to electrical stimuli and, in one patient, nociceptors firing spontaneously. All five patients showed examples of double spikes, in which a single brief electrical stimulus occasionally or regularly evoked two impulses. In one case, a second impulse occurred at one of three different delays. In all five patients, warming of the skin increased the probability of a second impulse occurring. Impulse doubling has previously been reported as occurring rarely in normal subjects and is attributable to unfiltering of multiple orthodromic impulses due to unidirectional conduction failure at branch points. A higher incidence of double firing in neuropathic pain patients is probably due to a reduced safety factor for conduction in the terminal arborizations of their C-nociceptors. These observations show that unidirectional conduction block provides a peripheral mechanism of temperature-dependent nociceptor hyperactivity in small-fibre neuropathy that may contribute to hyperalgesia.

Development of a Water Quality Index (WQI) of an Artificial Aquatic Ecosystem in Mexico

A Water Quality Index (WQI) is a simple numeric expression reflecting the quality of water in any ecosystem at a given time. The objective of this study was to develop a WQI for the man-made dam Francisco I. Madero located in Chihuahua, Mexico. Eight points were randomly selected in the dam area and at each point water samples were collected monthly from March 2011 to February 2012 at three depths;0.30 m, 5 m and 10 m. The following physical-chemical variables were measured: potential hydrogen (pH), electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature (T), turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness (TH) and chlorides (Cl-). In a first step for data analysis, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed for each variable considering a factorial treatment design 12 × 3 in which factor A was the month with 12 levels (sampling months) and factor B was the depth with three levels (0.30 m, 5 m and 10 m). In a second statistical step, the WQI was calculated for each month only for the surface sampling (0.30 m) and the resulting value was classified under three categories;2.5 as excellent water. The results showed the following ranges for single variables: pH of 7.63 - 10.65, EC of 190 - 320 μS·cm-1, DO of 1.30 - 12.1 mg·L-1, T of 11.30°C - 30°C, Turbidity of 0-1, 120 NTU, TDS of 170 - 220 mg·L-1, TH of 240 - 900 mg·L-1 and Cl- of 7.28 - 7034 mg·L-1. The calculated WQI demonstrated that water quality varies seasonally and was classified as poor in the rainy season to good in winter season. We conclude that in general the water from the dam is acceptable and suitable for ecological and a broad spectrum of other purposes.

The acceptability properties, total phenolic content, and antioxidant potential of four (red, green, brown, cream) desi chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) cultivars from the World Germplasm Bank were evaluated. Protein content of the grains varied from 20.12% to 28.85% (dw), highest for Cream ICC3421. The water absorption capacity (WAC) and cooking time (CT) of the whole grains ranged from 97.7 to 117.5 g water/100 g seeds (ww) and from 109.5 to 193.5 min, respectively;the highest WAC and lowest CT corresponded to Cream ICC3421 cultivar. The total phenolic content (TPC) and total hydrophilic antioxidant activity (AoxA) [oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) value] of desi chickpea cultivars varied from 746 to 1.286 μg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g sample (dw) and from 43.9 to 53.9 μmol Trolox equivalents (TE)/g sample (dw);Brown ICC3512 showed the highest ORAC value. Chickpea cultivars could contribute significantly to the management and/or prevention of degenerative diseases associated with free radical damage.

Aim:The aim of the study was to provide early muscular reinnervation to avoid muscle atrophy and functional loss in an experimental ***:Fifty rats were divided into five *** group 0(control group)only nerve dissection was *** peroneal nerve section was performed in the remaining *** end-to-end neurorrhaphy(EEN)was made in group *** group 2,an end-to-side neurorrhaphy(ESN)was performed from the tibial nerve to the peroneal *** group 3,a direct EEN,plus an ESN,were used as a nerve graft as a bridge from the donor nerve(tibial);all nerve coaptations were performed through an epineural *** group 4,only a neurotomy was made without any type of ***:Neural diameters were similar in groups 0,1,and 3(38±1μm,31±6μm,32±3μm).Neural fibers in group 3 had an 18%increase in the number of axons(P<0.001)when compared to group *** 2(28±1μm)and group 4(19±3μm)had diminished diameters with a lower index of muscle *** in group 4 presented with'clawed'lower extremities and had difficulty with *** graft diameters was similar in groups 2 and 3(33±4μm,31±3μm),but axon density was significantly higher in group 3(53±6μm,39±8μm)(P<0.001).Axon density was 36%higher when the combination of EEN and ESN with a neural graft through an epineural window was ***:This study revealed that the combination of EEN and ESN repairs with the addition of a neural graft provides a lower index of muscle fiber destruction,and can be a reliable method for reconstruction in high neural injuries.
