Geochemistry of magnetite in beach sands, stream sediments,and in situ magnetites in surrounding rocks at north Taiwan island

The geochemistry of magnetite provides constraints on the source(s) of the magnetite and other ore minerals. In this study, we constructed a magnetite distribution map, compared the chemical composition of magnetite present in hard rocks with that present in sand beach and stream deposits to determine magnetite’s provenance,investigated relationships among different trace elements,examined variations in the concentrations of trace elements present in magnetite, and identified the type of studied magnetite. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(LA-ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry/inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy was used to analyze samples available in small and large amounts, respectively. The average magnetite compositions of beach and river samples were substantially similar to those of andesite rocks,revealing that the magnetite samples may have originated from surrounding andesite rocks;this finding is consistent with the chemical composition of the samples analyzed using LA-ICP-MS. Some of the andesite rocks found in the study area were the primary source of magnetite aggregations in the beach sands and stream sands near or slightly away from these rocks. High Ti–V magnetites lie within the fields of Fe–Ti–V bearing magnetite and titanomagnetite(ulv?spinel). These titanomagnetites may be undergoing transformation to spinel minerals such as galaxite,gahnite, magnesiochromite, and chromite, which are characterized by the high concentrations of Al, Ti, Mg, Cr,Ni, Mn, and Zn. The positive correlation between Fe and Ti, Cr and Ni, and also the negative correlation between Fe and Mg, Mn and Zn can be attributed to various magnetite phases present in the study area. V, Co, Mo, Nb, Ga, Sn,and Ta exhibited a positive correlation with Fe and a negative correlation with Al. BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United ***,1 in 3 adults aged 50 years to 75 years have not been screened for *** detection and management of precancerous or malignant lesions has been shown to improve overall *** To determine the most significant facilitators and barriers to CRC screening in an outpatient clinic in rural North *** results of this study can then be used for quality improvement to increase the rate of patients ages 50 to 75 who are up to date on CRC *** This retrospective study examined 2428 patients aged 50 years to 75 years in an outpatient *** were up to date on CRC screening if they had fecal occult blood test or fecal immunochemical test in the past one year,Cologuard in the past three years,flexible sigmoidoscopy/virtual colonoscopy in the past five years,or colonoscopy in the past ten *** on patient socioeconomic status,comorbid conditions,and other determinants of health compliance were included as *** Age[odds ratio(OR)=1.058;P=0.017],no-show rate percent(OR=0.962;P<0.05),patient history of obstructive sleep apnea(OR=1.875;P=0.025),compliance with flu vaccinations(OR=1.673;P<0.05),compliance with screening mammograms(OR=2.130;P<0.05),and compliance with screening pap smears(OR=2.708;P<0.05)were important factors in determining whether a patient will receive CRC ***,gender,insurance or employment status,use of blood thinners,family history of CRC,or other comorbid conditions including diabetes,hypertension,congestive heart failure,chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,and end-stage renal disease were not found to have a statistically significant effect on patient adherence to CRC *** Patient age,history of sleep apnea,and compliance with other health maintenance tests were significant facilitators to CRC screening,while no-show rate percent w

Endoscopic advances in the management of non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding:A review

Patients presenting for colonoscopy: A great opportunity to screen for sleep apnea

AIMTo discover the prevalence and the feasibility of screening for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients presenting for routine colonoscopy. METHODSAdult patients having a colonoscopy for routine indications at our outpatient endoscopy center were eligible if they did not carry a diagnosis of OSA or had not had a prior sleep study. All patients were administered the Berlin questionnaire prior to the procedure. Mallampati, neck circumference, height, weight, and BMI were obtained for each patient. Patients were observed for any drops in oxygen saturation 10 s. Patients were determined to be high-risk if they met at least 2 of the 3 symptom categories for the Berlin questionnaire. RESULTSA total of 60 patients were enrolled and completed the study; mean age was 56 years (range 23-72 year). Twenty-six patients had a positive Berlin questionnaire (43.3%), 31 patients had a negative Berlin questionnaire (51.6%) and 3 patients had an equivocal result (5.0%). Patients with a positive Berlin questionnaire were more likely to be of increased weight (mean 210.5 lbs vs mean 169.8 lbs, P = 0.003), increased BMI (33.0 kg/m2vs 26.8 kg/m2, P = 0.0016), and have an increased neck circumference (38.4 cm vs 35.5 cm, P = 0.012). Patients with a positive Berlin questionnaire were more likely to have a drop in oxygen saturation vs 36.4%, P = 0.01). Patients with snoring were more likely to have a positive Berlin questionnaire (8/9 patients vs 1/31 patients with negative Berlin questionnaire; P = 0.0045). CONCLUSIONRisk for OSA is extremely common in a population presenting for a routine colonoscopy, and screening at the time of a colonoscopy offers an excellent opportunity to identify these patients.

Spatial distribution and infection rate of leishmaniasis vectors(Diptera: Psychodidae) in Ardabil Province, Northwest of Iran

Objective: To determine the spatial distribution and infection rate of sand flies as vectors of Leishmania parasite in Ardabil province, northwest of ***: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. The sand flies were collected from 30 areas in all 10 districts of Ardabil province during 2017. The specimens were caught using the sticky traps. The head and genitalia of sand flies were separated and mounted in Berlese solution for microscopic identification. The Geographical Information System ArcMap10.4.1 software was used to provide the spatial maps. Results: A total of 2 794 sand flies specimens were collected and 22 species of sand flies were identified from the two genera: Phlebotomus and Sergentomyia from Ardabil province. The highest frequency was found in Phlebotomus papatasi(23.7%) followed by Phlebotomus kandelakii(13.0%). The promastigote form of Leishmania infantum parasite has been reported from the three main vectors of visceral leishmaniasis(Phlebotomus kandelakii, Phlebotomus perfiliewi and Phlebotomus tobbi) from Ardabil province, where the spatial distribution map of these visceral leishmaniasis vectors was prepared. Some important species of sand flies such as Phlebotomus kandelakii, Phlebotomus perfiliewi and Phlebotomus tobbi were reported and identified as main and probable vectors of visceral leishmaniasis in Ardabil. Conclusions: According to the Geographic Information System based maps, the frequency of the sand flies as leishmaniasis vectors, the leishmania parasite infection rate and the prevalence of the disease in the central areas of Ardabil province are higher than in other areas in Ardabil province.

Lateral rectus muscle recession and the vertical palpebral fissure height: to do or not to do inter-muscular septum dissection?

In this study, we aimed to evaluate changes of vertical palpebral fissure height （VPFH） after unilateral lateral rectus muscle recession. Twenty-five and twenty-six patients who were candidates for lateral rectus muscle recession were assigned into “with” and “without” intermuscular septum dissection study arms. The VPFH was measured at one-day before surgery and in two weeks and three months, postoperatively. Three months after surgery, significant increase of VPFH was observed in both groups （Paired t-test; P=0.005）. Also, less widening of VPFH was observed in “with intermuscular septum dissection” group （Change in VPFH in “with intermuscular septum dissection” vs “without intermuscular septum dissection” groups： 0.48 mm vs 1.34 mm; ANCOVA test; P〈0.001）. However, such results were not observed two weeks post-operatively （Change in VPFH in “with intermuscular septum dissection” vs “without intermuscular septum dissection” groups： -0.28 mm vs 0.28 mm; ANCOVA test; P=0.302）. Intermuscular septum dissection is recommended in lateral rectus muscle recession to partially prevent the undesirable increment of VPFH.
