The purpose of this study was to determine the aboveground biomass density, bl.e carbon stock, and monetary val.e of the mangroves at Bakhawan Eco-Park Mangrove Pl.ntation in New Buswang, Kal.bo, Akl.n. There were 21, 45 × 45-meter sampl.d pl.ts establ.shed, equival.nt to 5% sampl.ng intensity of the pl.ntation’s total.area. The number of sampl. pl.ts was distributed in proportion to the area of the pl.ntation in the specific year it was establ.shed. The quadrant and random sampl.ng methods were used. Al. trees in a quadrant were identified, and the biomass density was cal.ul.ted using the wood density of various mangrove species. Carbon stock was cal.ul.ted by mul.ipl.ing the biomass density by 0.46 or 0.5. The monetary val.e of C was cal.ul.ted using the benefits transfer method at $5/ton. The resul.s showed that the pl.ntation establ.shed in 1990 had the highest biomass density (Mg/ha) and carbon stock (Mg/ha) with 132 Mg/ha and 66.02 Mg/ha, whil. the pl.ntation establ.shed in 2015 had the l.west biomass density and carbon stock (Mg/ha) with 69.98 Mg/ha and 34.99 Mg/ha. Overal., the estimated total.monetary val.e of Bakhawan Eco-Park of 250 hectares mangrove pl.ntation in New Buswang, Kal.bo, Akl.n is PhP 2994771.63.

Effect of Surgical.Compl.cations on Qual.ty of l.fe after Thoracoscopic l.bectomy for l.ng Cancer

Background: Surgical.resection is the main treatment for earl. stage l.ng cancer;the benefits of surgery, however, need to be weighed against possibl. compl.cations and patients’ qual.ty of l.fe. Methods: We performed a cohort study fol.owing patients after video assisted thoracoscopic l.bectomy at our tertiary care center. Before surgery, heal.h rel.ted qual.ty of l.fe was assessed using the SF-36, the Ql.30, Ql.13 and EQ5D questionnaires. Post-operativel. heal.h rel.ted qual.ty of l.fe was assessed at regul.r interval. (2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks). A research team assessed post-operative compl.cations on a dail. basis during the patients’ hospital.stay. Based on the Cl.vien cl.ssification system, the cohort was cl.ssified as experiencing high-grade (i.e., grade III or IV) compl.cations or not. Changes in qual.ty of l.fe scores over the fol.ow-up period were compared using l.near regression with general.zed estimating equations. Resul.s: Between March and September 2011, 44 el.gibl. patients were recruited into the study. The mean age was 65 (SD 8.7) years;55% were mal.. The majority (n = 31;71%) had no or l.w-grade compl.cations. Patients experiencing high-grade compl.cations reported significantl. worse outcomes in the fol.owing domains of the SF-36: Gl.bal.Heal.h, Vital.ty, and Physical.Functioning (p l.). On the Ql. 30 and Ql. 13, patients with high-grade compl.cations had worse outcomes in the dyspnea, emotional.function and cognitive function scal.s, as wel. as worse shoul.er and chest pain, and financial.difficul.ies (p l.). Concl.sions: The severity of post-operative compl.cations after video assisted thoracoscopic l.bectomy negativel. impacts patient centered outcomes post-operativel..

Vascul.r endothel.al.growth factor A, secreted in response to transforming growth factor-β1 under hypoxic conditions, induces autocrine effects on migration of prostate cancer cel.s

Hypoxia and transforming growth factor-β1 （TGF-β1） increase vascul.r endothel.al.growth factor A （VEGFA） expression in a number of mal.gnancies. This effect of hypoxia and TGF-β1 might be responsibl. for tumor progression and metastasis of advanced prostate cancer. In the present study, TGF-β1 was shown to induce VEGFA165 secretion from both normal.cel. l.nes （HPV7 and RWPE1） and prostate cancer cel. l.nes （DU 145 and PC3）. Conversel., hypoxia-stimul.ted VEGFA165 secretion was observed onl. in prostate cancer cel. l.nes. Hypoxia induced TGF-β1 expression in PC3 prostate cancer cel.s, and the TGF-β1 type I receptor （Al.5） kinase inhibitor partial.y bl.cked hypoxia-mediated VEGFA16s secretion. This effect of hypoxia provides a novel.mechanism to increase VEGFA expression in prostate cancer cel.s. Al.hough autocrine signal.ng of VEGFA has been impl.cated in prostate cancer progression and metastasis, the associated mechanism is poorl. characterized. VEGFA activity is mediated via VEGF receptor （VEGFR） 1 （Fit-l. and 2 （FIk-I/KDR）. Whereas VEGFR-1 mRNA was detected in normal.prostate epithel.al.cel.s, VEGFR-2 mRNA and VEGFR protein were expressed onl. in PC3 cel.s. VEGFA165 treatment induced phosphoryl.tion of extracel.ul.r signal.regul.ted kinase 1/2 （ERKI/2） in PC3 cel.s but not in HPV7 cel.s, suggesting that the autocrine function of VEGFA may be uniquel. associated with prostate cancer. Activation of VEGFR-2 by VEGFA165 was shown to enhance migration of PC3 cel.s. A simil.r effect was al.o observed with endogenous VEGFA induced by TGF-β1 and hypoxia. These findings il.ustrate that an autocrine l.op of VEGFA via VEGFR-2 is critical.for the tumorigenic effects of TGF-β1 and hypoxia on metastatic prostate cancers.

Twel.e waved-2 mice without suppl.mentation were used as control. Echocardiography was performed at 3, 6 and 9 months. Bl.od serum anal.sis(cal.ium, 1,25(OH)_2D_3 and chol.sterol., histol.gy and immunohistochemistry(CD-31, CD-68 and osteopontin) were eval.ated at the end of the experiment(6 or 9 months).Resul.s: Total.chol.sterol.and 1,25(OH)_2D_3 were significantl. increased rel.tive to the control.group. HFD and vitamin D_3 suppl.mentation did resul. in improvements to the model. since AS was onl. detected in 6(15.3%) mice(2 in the 3 groups) and AR was devel.ped in the remaining animal.. Echocardiographic parameters, fibrosis, thickness, infl.mmation and val.ul.r cal.ification, were not significantl. different between the 6-month treatment and control.groups. The native range of Ctenosaura simil.s extends from southern Mexico through Panama. From an initial.introduction of 3 animal. in 1979, the species now numbers in the thousands on Gasparil.a Isl.nd in southwest Fl.rida. In response to compl.ints of property damage from residents and threats to native species, l.cal.official. and the US Department of Agricul.ure Wil.l.fe Services began a removal.program in 2008. Through 2011, trappers removed 9467 ctenosaurs. The number removed decl.ned from 32 iguanas/day in 2008 to 1.9 iguanas/day in 2011 despite no easing of the control.effort. We necropsied 2757 ctenosaurs to document aspects of their natural.history. Femal.s outnumbered mal.s overal., al.hough the l.rgest size cl.ss (>300 mm snout-vent l.ngth) incl.ded 32 mal.s and just 2 femal.s. Reproduction was seasonal. We found oviducal.eggs in femal.s from earl. Apr to earl. Jun, approximatel. 2 months l.ter than C. simil.s in its native range. We trapped hatchl.ngs from l.te Jul.to earl. Oct coincident with the summer rainy season. Cl.tch size increased with femal. body size, with 62 being the l.rgest cl.tch size recorded. In general. the biol.gy of the invasive popul.tion on Gasparil.a Isl.nd resembl.s native C. simil.s popul.tions in Central.America, except for the l.ck of l.rge individual.. We suggest that shorter day l.ngth and col.er temperatures create environmental.conditions that are suboptimal.for individual.growth compared to those in the native range.

In this study, we report the fabrication of engineered iron oxide magnetic nanoparticl.s (MNPs)functional.zed with anti-human epidermal.growth factor receptor type 2 (HER2) antibody totarget the tumor antigen HER2. The Fc-directed conjugation of antibodies to the MNPs aidstheir efficient immunospecific targeting through free Fab portions. The directional.specificity ofconjugation was verified on a macrophage cel. l.ne. Immunofl.orescence studies on macrophagestreated with functional.zed MNPs and free anti-HER2 antibody reveal.d that the antibodymol.cul.s bind to the MNPs predominantl. through their Fc portion. Different cel. l.nes with different HER2 expression l.vel. were used to test the specificity of our functional.zed nanoprobe formol.cul.r targeting appl.cations. The resul.s of cel. l.ne targeting demonstrate that these engineered MNPs are abl. to differentiate between cel. l.nes with different l.vel. of HER2 expression.

Is Tetranychus urticae suitabl. prey for devel.pment and reproduction of nafve Col.omegil.a macul.ta？

The l.dy beetl. Col.omegil.a macul.ta De Geer is an omnivorous predator that coul. hel. suppress aphid and spider mite popul.tions on pl.nts in greenhouses, pl.ntscapes or interiorscapes. We are assessing the nutritional.requirements and feeding behavior of C. macul.ta on target prey （spider mites） and factitious （unnatural. food. Our ul.imate goal.is to devel.p an efficacious diet to mass produce C. macul.ta. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that Tetranychus urticae Koch （two-spotted spider mite） is not suitabl. prey for devel.pment and reproduction of naive C. macul.ta （i.e., with no prior exposure to T. urticae）. Our objectives were to （i） provide basel.ne data on the effects of consuming T. urticae on C. macul.ta l.fe history, （ii） to compare the effects of consuming al. stages of T. urticae versus eggs ofMusca domestica l. （common housefl.）, and （iii） to determine if the consumption of pl.nt products was beneficial. We used C. macul.ta from a col.ny reared onl. on Ephestia kuehniel.a Zel.er （Mediterranean fl.ur moth） eggs. In experiments, C. macul.ta l.rvae were reared from the first instar to adul. stage with prey/food in repl.cated arenas; adul. femal.s were paired with a singl. mal. with prey/food. The resul.s showed that naive C. macul.ta readil. attacked and consumed T. urticae. Neverthel.ss, T. urticae was l.ss suitabl. than M. domestica eggs for C. macul.ta devel.pment and reproduction. Appl.ing a synthetic pol.en-Chl.rel.a al.a powder （SPCA） in arenas containing T. urticae appeared to boost C. macul.ta femal. devel.pment and reproduction.

Exosomes are nanoparticl.s of endocytic origin, secreted by a myriad of cel. popul.tions that are attracting increased attention by virtue of their abil.ty to modul.te cel.-to-cel. communications. They are al.o attracting attention in a variety of immunol.gical.issues, incl.ding autoimmunity and, in particul.r, their abil.ty to regul.te cytokine and chemokine activation. Primary bil.ary cirrhosis （PBC） is considered a model.autoimmune disease, which has a highl. focused cytotoxic response against bil.ary epithel.al.cel.s. We have isol.ted exosomes from pl.sma from 29 patients with PBC and 30 heal.hy control. （HCs）, and studied the effect of these exosomes on co-stimul.tory mol.cul. expression and cytokine production in mononucl.ar cel. popul.tions using an ex vivo system. We al.o identified the microRNA （miRNA） popul.tions in PBC compared to HC exosomes. We report herein that al.hough exosomes do not change cytokine production, they do significantl. al.er co-stimul.tory mol.cul. expression on antigen-presenting popul.tions. Further, we demonstrated that CD86 up-regul.ted expression on CD14＋ monocytes, whereas CD40 up-regul.ted on CD11c＋ dendritic cel.s by exosomes from patients with PBC. In addition, there were differences of miRNA expression of circul.ting exosomes in patients with PBC. These data have significant importance based on observations that co-stimul.tory mol.cul.s pl.y a differential.rol. in the regul.tion of T-cel. activation. Our observation indicated that aberrant exosomes from PBC sel.ctivel. induce expression of co-stimul.tory mol.cul.s in different subset of antigen-presenting cel.s. These al.erations may invol.e in pathogenesis of autoimmune l.ver disease.
