Radiative thermoelectric energy converters, which include thermophotovoltaic cells, thermoradiative cells, electroluminescent refrigerators, and negative elec- troluminescent refrigerators, are semiconductor p-n devices that either generate electricity or extract heat from a cold body while exchanging thermal radiation with their surroundings. If this exchange occurs at micro or nanoscale distances, power densities can be greatly enhanced and near-field radiation effects may improve performance. This review covers the fundamentals of near-field thermal radiation, photon entropy, and none- quilibrium effects in semiconductor diodes that underpin device operation. The development and state of the art of these near-field converters are discussed in detail, and remaining challenges and opportunities for progress are identified.

Background:Grasslands are globally imperiled,facing continued threats from anthropogenic *** remains a common grassland restoration method,and yet,is typically met with limited success,partially because soils of degraded systems inhibit the germination of native ***:we assessed the germination success of 16 native grassland species sown in soils collected from a degraded grassland converted into a nonnative warm‐season perennial grass,Bothriochloa ischaemum,and areas previously subjected to the eradication of this nonnative *** objectives were as follows:(1)determine native seed germination in soils collected from *** or eradication control sites,compared to germination in native grassland soil,and(2)assess if native soil inoculation improves germination,compared to germination in degraded soils without ***:Germination of native species was exceedingly low when seeded into soil dominated by ***,or in soil previously treated with combinations of herbicide and prescribed fire,relative to native grassland ***,amendments with native grassland soil resulted in germination equivalent to native grasslands,alleviating the negative influences of degraded ***:Our results highlight the role of native soil in improving the germination of desirable plant species following intensive management and soil *** research may improve restoration outcomes for managers focused on the conservation and restoration of grasslands.

A better understanding and a more quantitative design of mixed-species stands will contribute to more integrative and goal-oriented research in mixed-species forests. Much recent work has indicated that the structure and growth of mixed species forests may fundamentally differ from monocultures. Here we suggest how to progress from the present accumulation of phenomenological findings to a design of mixed-species stands and advanced silvicultural prescriptions by means of modelling. First, the knowledge of mixing effects on the structure and growth at the stand, species, and individual tree level is reviewed, with a focus on those findings that are most essential for suitable modelling and silvicultural designs and the regulation of mixed stands as opposed to monocultures. Then, the key role of growth models, stand simulators, and scenario assessments for designing mixed species stands is discussed The next section illustrates that existing forest stand growth models require some fundamental modifications to become suitable for both monocultures and mixed-species stands. we then explore how silvicultural prescriptions derived from scenario runs would need to be both quantified and simplified for transfer to forest management and demonstrated in training plots. Finally, we address the main remaining knowledge gaps that could be remedied through empirical research.

Photosynthetic microalgae like Nannochloropsis hold enormous potential as sustainable,light-driven biofactories for the production of high-value natural products such as *** oceanica is distinguished as a particularly robust host with extensive genomic and transgenic resources *** capacity to grow in wastewater,brackish,and sea waters,coupled with advances in microalgal metabolic engineering,genome editing,and synthetic biology,provides an excellent *** the present work,we demonstrate how *** can be engineered to produce the diterpene casbene—an important intermediate in the biosynthesis of pharmacologically relevant macrocyclic *** accumulated after stably expressing and targeting the casbene synthase from Daphne genkwa(DgTPS1)to the algal *** engineered strains yielded production titers of up to 0.12 mg g^(−1) total dry cell weight(DCw)*** overexpression and chloroplast targeting of two upstream rate-limiting enzymes in the 2-C-methyl-d-erythritol 4-phosphate pathway,Coleus forskohlii 1-deoxy-d-xylulose-5-phosphate synthase and geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase genes,further enhanced the yield of casbene to a titer up to 1.80 mg g^(−1) *** results presented here form a basis for further development and production of complex plant diterpenoids in microalgae.
