In higher plants, autophagy is bulk degradation process in vacuole necessary for survival under nutrient-limited conditions and plays important roles in senescence, development and pathogenic response, etc. Cowpea is one of the most important legume crops in semi-aride region, which is highly tolerant to drought stress. Changes of photoassimilate status by drought stress and/or sink-source balance appeared to affect autophagy and senescence of leaf in cowpea. Accordingly, we focused on roles of sucrose signal in autophagy and amino acid recycling in cowpea. Effects of starvation stress on the expression of autophagy-related genes (ATGs) and amino acid catabolism-related genes in cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] were examined by Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and anti-ATG8i specific antibody. Sucrose starvation stress enhanced the expression levels of VuATG8i, VuATG8c and VuATG4 incowpea seedlings. The expressions of amino acid catabolism related genes, such as asparagine synthase (VuASN1), proline dehydrogenase1 (VuProDH) and branched chain amino acid transaminase (VuBCAT2), are also up-regulated under the sucrose starvation. In contrast, high sucrose condition suppressed autophagy and the expressions of ATGs. These results indicate that sucrose starvation stress stimulates both autophagy and amino acid catabolism by regulation of ATGs and VuBCAT2. It is conceivable that sucrose starvation stress enhances autophagy in cowpea, possibly via branched chain amino acid level regulated by the starvation-induced BCAT.

The goals of this study were to examine, using the temporal dominance of sensations (TDS) method, the effects of 1) the sucrose concentration on the temporal sequence of sweetness perception in four fruit-flavored (lemon, peach, strawberry, and vanilla) teas with 0.05, 0.15, and 0.25 M sucrose;and 2) participants’ sex on this temporal sequence. Twenty-four healthy young adults were assigned to female (n = 12) and male (n = 12) groups. Both groups evaluated five sensory attributes in 12 samples (four fruit-flavored teas, each with three sucrose concentrations). As in our preceding study [1], two sensations, sweetness and fruitiness, were dominant after ingesting the 12 teas in both groups, but the temporal sequence of sweetness perception differed between the two groups. On average, the male group reported the first appearance of sweetness earlier in the samples with 0.05 M sucrose compared with the female group, with the samples containing 0.15 and 0.25 M sucrose. The average durations of the sweetness sensation were different between the male and female groups as well as among the sucrose concentrations and the four flavors tested.

为了明确水肥一体化灌溉系统中不同土壤水势条件下,施用芽孢杆菌B006菌剂对茄子生长及产量的促进作用,采用灌根法测定施用芽孢杆菌B006菌剂(1′107CFU·mL-1)对盆栽茄子幼苗生长的影响。在日光温室开展两因子、两水平交互田间小区试验,在土壤水势分别为-30 kPa和-40 kPa条件下,设置施用和不施用(对照)芽孢杆菌B006菌剂共4组处理。各处理均施用278.77 kg·hm-2化学肥料(N/P/K为17∶9∶34)。采用电子张力计监测土壤水势,采用水肥一体化自动灌溉系统进行灌溉。分别在移栽时和定植后30 d浇灌浓度为1×107CFU·mL-1的B006菌剂稀释液。35 d后测定茄子的株高、茎粗、叶绿素含量和地上部干质量,50 d后调查茄子开花数,每次施肥前测定土壤速效氮、磷、钾含量,收获期测定产量,收获后测定根长和根干质量。结果表明:施用B006菌剂处理的盆栽茄子株高、茎粗、根长和根干质量比对照分别提高了16.7%、20.7%、28.7%和67.0%。在日光温室大棚试验中,施用B006菌剂处理土壤的速效磷、速效钾含量均低于对照;土壤水势-30 kPa和-40 kPa条件下,施用B006菌剂处理的茄子产量比对照分别提高了24.5%和18.1%。当灌溉量从804.88 m3·hm-2减少到574.91 m3·hm-2时,施用B006菌剂的两处理之间产量无显著差异。综上所述,施用芽孢杆菌B006菌剂可以促进茄子对氮、磷、钾的吸收,提高肥料利用率,从而促进植物生长,甚至在少水灌溉条件下不降低茄子产量。

A case of severe pneumonia caused by multiple bacterial organisms following type B influenza virus infection

Crystal structures of materials employed for solid oxide fuel cells at operating conditions have been examined using our originally designed high temperature X-ray diffraction apparatus with oxygen partial pressure, P(O2), control system The phase relationship of Ce1-xMxO2-δ(M=Gd, Sm and Y;x=0.0-0.2) which is expected to be a new electrolyte material for low temperature SOFC operation, on temperature, cation content and concentration of oxide ion vacancy have been proposed by X-ray dif&action at high temperatures under log P (O2) of 0--24. Structural phase transition of new electrolyte, La1-xSrxGa1-yMgyO3-δ, has also been analyzed and relationship between crystal structure and thermodynamic character of the phase transition has been clarified. Reduction expansion behavior of La1-xCaxCrO3-δ, which is employed as a interconnector of SOFC, has been examined. It was revealed that the origin of reduction expansion was oxide ion vacancy, which behaved as ideal solution at 8 lower than 0.03 and showed deviation from ideal solution model at d higher than 0.03.

A 50-year old woman, without any underlying disease, presented with pneumonia after experiencing flu-like symptoms. Streptococcus pneumoniae was identified on admission through blood culture and urine antigen tests. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae were present in the sputum culture. Computed tomography showed cavity development in the consolidation areas, typical of staphylococcal pneumonia. The patient was intubated and received mechanical ventilation as respiratory failure progressed. She exhibited improvement following antibiotic therapy. The change in type B influenza virus serum titer confirmed that this was a unique case of severe pneumonia caused by multiple bacterial organisms following type B influenza virus infection.

2-Octyl-Cyanoacrylate Skin Adhesive Used as a Splinting Material in Auricular Surgery

In cases of auricular surgery, postoperative dressings are thought to be important for keeping auricular contour and in helping to prevent from dressing failures due to edema or subcutaneous hematoma, which may result in fibrous or cartilaginous proliferation. However, it is often difficult to achieve success with standard dressings because of the complicated shape of the auricle. We used 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate skin adhesive to dress the auricle after different types of auricular procedures (five cases of cryptotia, two of prominent ear, two of severe auricular laceration, two of skin grafting and one of flap repair of the partial auricle defect). The 2-octyl-cyanoacrlaate skin adhesive was applied to the suture line and the operated and peripheral areas for wider coverage. No dressing materials were placed over the surface. In all cases, the desired outcome was achieved, without subcutaneous hematoma, wound dehiscence, and wound infection. Contact dermatitis caused by the skin adhesive was not observed in any of the cases. Dressing and splinting after auricular surgery can be simply and successfully achieved using 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate skin adhesive. There is no need for more complicated dressings and post-surgical dressing changes, resulting in higher patient satisfaction.
