strong>Objective: strong>To assess whether the use of prenatal betamethasone in pregnancies with elective Caesarean section (C-section) at 38 weeks has a similar risk of adverse neonatal respiratory outcomes than elective C-section at 39 weeks. Methods: Retrospective cohort study of pregnant patients with singleton pregnancies and elective C-section at term in a one-year period. Cases were C-section at 38 weeks of gestation with a complete course of betamethasone started 48-hours before. As a control group, pregnancies with a C-section at 39 weeks without betamethasone were included. Results: During the study period, 186 patients were included. Of these, 91 were delivered at 38 weeks and 95 at 39 weeks. There were no significant differences in maternal age and parity. Moreover, there were no significant differences in respiratory complications (respiratory distress syndrome [RDS] = 0% vs 1.1%;pspan> = 1.0, transitory tachypnea [TT] = 0% vs 0%) and admission to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) (8.8% vs 6.3%;p = 0.7) between deliveries at 38 weeks and 39 weeks, respectively. Transcriptional Regulation and signaling in Phosphorus starvation: What About Legumes?

The availability of soil phosphorus （P）, an essential element, is one of the most important requirements for plant growth and crop production. The morphological and physiological adaptations evolved by plants to cope with P starvation have been well characterized. several P deficiency plant responses are regulated at the transcriptional level. microarray analysis has generated valuable information on global gene expression in Arabidopsis thaliana grown under P-stress. Despite the identification of P responsive genes, little is known about the regulation of gene expression changes. Four transcription factors, PHRI, WRKY75, ZAT6 and BHLH32, involved in P starvation signaling have been characterized in Arabidopsis, and signaling pathways are deciphered. This review analyzes the current knowledge of transcriptional regulation of P starvation responses in Arabidopsis vis-a-vis legumes such as lupine, common bean and medicago truncatula. The knowledge on regulatory and signaling mechanisms involved in P acquisition and use in legumes will be useful for improvement of these crops, which account for a large proportion of the world＇s crop production, providing good nutritional quality feed and food.

Cuba has been leading marine protected area(mPA)designation in the Caribbean region to ensure conservation of its valuable marine ***,an efficient monitoring program for mPAs is still to be implemented and will benefit from pre-existing *** highly regulated mPA of Punta Francés National Park is one of the first Cuban mPAs and was established mainly to protect species and ecosystems for tourism *** of protection effects on commercial fish species was lacking in this *** study aimed at increasing local scientific knowledge by providing a baseline study about the most commercially fished families(Haemulidae,Lutjanidae and serranidae)around Punta Francés *** collected represent only a limited period but can be used as a base point to support future *** abundance in number and biomass,and size were collected to test for differences between inside and adjacent areas outside the Punta Francés mPA,in different coral reef *** main result of this study was the significantly larger size and biomass of snappers and groupers outside the mPA where intense fisheries *** observation consistent with a large spawning aggregation was also recorded outside the *** with a limited set of data,these results suggest that,at least temporarily,the most targeted species[and sizes]are still highly vulnerable to *** habitats in the adjacent area,that are apparently missing within the mPA,may support some of the results *** the limits of the Punta Francés mPA to include those habitats outside may be critical to ensure the effectiveness of this mPA in contributing to protect the most commercial species of the *** should be done together with efficient fisheries management measures in the region,such as the significantly increase of minimum legal sizes and temporal closures during spawning migrations.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction of antioxidant polyphenolic compounds from Nephelium lappaceum L.(mexican variety) husk

Objective: To reach the recovery and identification of antioxidant polyphenolic compounds from Nephelium lappaceum L.(mexican variety) husk using ultrasound-assisted extraction and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry as well as the in vitro antioxidant activity. methods: Rambutan husk extracts were obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction, mass/volume ratio, water/ethanol percentage and extraction time were evaluated. Once the best extraction condition of polyphenolic compounds was defined, a polyphenolic fraction was recovered using Ambetlite XAD-16. The total content of antioxidant polyphenolic compounds was determined by summation of the total hydrolysable polyphenol and total condensed polyphenol contents. Recovered compounds were identified by FTIR(ATR) spectroscopy and HPLC/EsI/ms. The antioxidant activity was carried out by ABTs, DPPH and lipid oxidation inhibition in vitro methods. Results: In mexican variety rambutan husk, the total polyphenolic content was 487.67 mg/g, after ultrasound-assisted extraction. According to the HPLC/EsI/ms analysis 12 antioxidant polyphenolic compounds were identified, mostly ellagitannins such as geraniin, corilagin and ellagic acid. The antioxidant activity determined by ABTs, DPPH and lipid oxidation inhibition methods was demonstrated. The main functional groups of the identified compounds were determined by FTIR analysis. Conclusions: It was demonstrated that ultrasound-assisted extraction was effective and allowed the extraction and recovery of antioxidant polyphenolic compounds. Furthermore mexican variety rambutan husk is an important source for recovering polyphenolic compounds with antioxidant activity, these compounds have potential application for the treatment/prevention of various diseases related to cancer and pathogenic microorganisms.

Adiponectin as a protective factor in hepatic steatosis

AIm: Obesity and insulin resistance (IR) are closely related to hepatic steatosis (Hs), and adiponectin is a hepatic insulin sensitizer that has important effects in liver function. This study aims at investigating the relationship between serum adiponectin concentration and the presence of Hs. mETHODs: We carried out a cross-sectional study in a check-up unit of a University Hospital in mexico City. We enrolled 196 subjects, comprising 98 subjects with Hs (27 women, 71 men) and 98 controls (37 women and 61 men). Anthropometric, metabolic and biochemical variables were measured in the two groups. serum adiponectin and leptin concentrations were determined, their association with grade of Hs tested, and concentrations, according to quartiles, compared between cases and controls. X2 analysis for linear trends was used to test for a dose-response relationship and logistic regression analysis was conducted to test for a protective effect of adiponectin. REsULTs: The Hs subjects were older and more obese than controls, with a central obesity pattern. In the fourth quartile of adiponectin concentrations, Hs was less common and severe. In a multivariate model of the fourth quartile of the adiponectin concentrations, we observed a protective effect (OR = 0.17, 95%CI: 0.04-0.67, P= 0.01). In subjects with more severe Hs, we observed higher leptin concentrations, and caloric intakes, total fat and iron consumption were higher than in controls. CONCLUsION: The results of the present study suggest that a high serum concentration of adiponectin is associated with a protective effect against Hs.

Upwelling coastal systems can be used to understand how dissolved oxygen and biological productivity control the accumulation of redox-sensitive metals in marine *** aluminium(Al),cadmium(Cd),iron(Fe),nickel(Ni),molybdenum(mo),vanadium(V),total organic carbon(TOC),total nitrogen(TN)and total sulfur(Ts)contents in surficial sediment collected from different water depths(30,70,and 120 m)in three northern Chilean bays influenced by coastal upwelling and oxygen minimum zones(OmZs)were *** component analysis(PCA),cluster analysis,and spearman’s rank correlation were used to identify the mechanisms responsible for the redox-sensitive metal *** content of redox-sensitive metals and organic components in sediment increased with increasing water column depth,whereas lithogenic metals *** the mejillones del sur and Caldera bays,the enrichment factors of the redox-sensitive metals showed enrichment for all metals with *** Cd and V enrichments are mainly the product of biogenic flow to the seabed,and the mo and Ni enrichments are due to preservation under low subsurface oxygen *** reduction is not an important mechanism in the accumulation of redox-sensitive metals in the sediment of the three *** PCA showed that the behaviors of the redox-sensitive metals and organic components reflect differences in the effects of the OmZ in sediment along the coast of northern Chile,with a more intense OmZ in mejillones del sur bay and weaker OmZs in Caldera and Inglesa ***,the high degree of enrichment in redox-sensitive metals in Caldera Bay can be attributed to the intense activity of the mining industry near the bay,a situation that produces geochemical behavior similar to that observed in mejillones del sur Bay.

Adverse hepatic reactions associated with calcium carbimide and disulfiram therapy: Is there still a role for these drugs?

Disulfiram and calcium carbimide are two alcohol deterrants widely used in alcoholism treatment, however, there exist great concerns over their safety. Reports on hepatotoxicity, mainly related to disulfiram therapy, have been published. The hepatotoxic potential of calcium carbimide is less well characterized. Here, we describe four cases of liver damage related to this therapeutic group that were submitted to a Registry of hepatotoxicity and point out the limitations that we face when prescribing these compounds. A reassessment of the role of these compounds in the management of alcohol dependence is clearly needed.
