Synthetic varieties(SVs)are populations generated by randomly mating their parents.They are a good alternative for low-input farmers who grow onions,maize,and other allogamous crops since the seed produced by a SV does not change from one generation to the next.Although SV progenitors are commonly pure lines,in this case a synthetic(Syn_(TC))whose parents are t three-way line crosses,a very common type of maize hybrid grown in Mexico,is studied.The aim was to develop a general and exact equation for the inbreeding coefficient of a Syn_(TC)eF_(m)^(f)Syn_(TC)T because of its relationship with the mean of economically important traits.This objective arose due to the need for a more advanced study in terms of determining whether F_(m)^(f)Syn_(TC)can be applied specifically and accurately for any number of parents(t),plants per parent(m)and inbreeding coefficient(IC)of the initial lines(F_(l)).A formula for the IC of the Syn_(TC)was derived that,given any values of F_(l)(0≤F_(l)≤1)and t,is specific for any value of m,not just for“large”numbers associated with the context in which the Hardy-Weinberg law is stated.It was found that F_(m)^(f)Syn_(TC)is very sensitive to changes in m when m is not greater than eight,after which it tends to stabilize very quickly.In summary,unlike previously derived formulas,F_(m)^(f)Syn_(TC)is exact for any values of t,m and F_(l).

Default Probabilities quantitatively measures the credit risk that a borrower will be unable or unwilling to repay its debt. An accurate model to estimate, as a function of time, these default probabilities is of crucial importance in the credit derivatives market. In this work, we adapt Merton’s [1] original works on credit risk, consumption and portfolio rules to model an individual wealth scenario, and apply it to compute this individual default probabilities. Using our model, we also compute the time depending individual default intensities, recovery rates, hazard rate and risk premiums. Hence, as a straight-forward application, our model can be used as novel way to measure the credit risk of individuals.

AIM:To evaluate rational and experiential intelligence in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) sufferers.METHODS:We recruited 100 subjects with IBS as per Rome criteria(50 consulters and 50 non-consulters) and 100 healthy controls,matched by age,sex and educational level.Cases and controls completed a clinical questionnaire(including symptom characteristics and medical consultation)and the following tests:rational-intelligence(Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale,3rd edition);experiential intelligence(Constructive Thinking Inventory);personality(NEO personality inventory); psychopathology(MMPI-2),anxiety(state-trait anxiety inventory)and life events(social readjustment rating scale).Analysis of variance was used to compare the test results of IBS-sufferers and controls,and a logistic regression model was then constructed and adjusted for age,sex and educational level to evaluate any possible association with IBS.RESUlTS: No differences were found between IBS cases and controls in terms of IQ (102.0 ±10.8 vs 102.8±12.6), but IBS sufferers scored significantly lower in global constructive thinking (43.7±9.4 vs 49.6±9.7). In the logistic regression model, global constructive thinking score was independently linked to suffering from IBS [OR 0.92 (0.87-0.97)], without significant OR for total IQ.CONClUSION: IBS subjects do not show lower rational intelligence than controls, but lower experiential intelligence is nevertheless associated with IBS.

It has been reported that one of the factors that promotes tumoral progression is the abnormal activation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition program. This process is associated with tumoral cells acquiring invasive and malignant properties and has the transcription factor zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1 （ZEB1） as one of its main activators. However, the role of ZEB1 in promoting malignancy in prostate cancer （PC, a） is still unclear. Here, we report that ZEB1 expression correlates with Gleason score in PCa samples and that expression of ZEB1 regulates epithelial-mesenchymal transition and malignant characteristics in PCa cell lines. The results showed that ZEB1 expression is higher in samples of higher malignancy and that overexpression of ZEB1 was able to induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition by upregulating the mesenchymal marker Vimentin and downregulating the epithelial marker E-Cadherin. On the contrary, ZEB 1 silencing repressed Vimentin expression and upregulated E-Cadherin. ZEB1 expression conferred enhanced motility and invasiveness and a higher colony formation capacity to 22Rvl cells whereas DU145 cells with ZEB1 silencing showed a decrease in those same properties. Freshwater reservoirs are essential owing because of their ecological, economic, and social importance.They are particularly vulnerable to contamination, as of metal and metalloids, derived from anthropogenic activities like mining. The temporal variations in trace element concentrations(arsenic(As),mercury(Hg), chromium(Cr), copper(Cu), nickel(Ni), lead(Pb), and zinc(Zn)), enrichment, fluxes, and possible sources were evaluated by studying two sediment cores from the la Angostura(ANG) Reservoir(northwest Mexico), using210Pb geochronology. The enrichment factors showed from null to minor enrichment for most elements, but moderate to severe enrichment of mercury(Hg). Most trace element concentrations had a detrital origin, and notable Hg concentration increases since the past decade were associated with severe drought periods, likely resulting from wildfires. The observed sediment concentrations of As and Hg can cause adverse effects on biota in the ecosystem since they are above the probable effect level(PEl). Development of strategies for metal attenuation in this reservoir is recommended and metals should be controlled until specific ecotoxicological studies are performed.

One of the factors promoting tumoral progress is the abnormal activation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)program which has been associated with chemoresistance in tumoral cells.The transcription factor zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1(ZEB1),a key EMT activator,has recently been related to docetaxel resistance,the main chemotherapeutic used in advanced prostate cancer treatment.The mechanisms involved in this protective effect are still unclear.In a previous work,we demonstrated that ZEB1 expression induced an EMT-like phenotype in prostate cancer cell lines.In this work,we used prostate cancer cell lines 22Rvl and DU145 to study the effect of ZEB1 modulation on docetaxel resistance and its possible mechanisms.The results showed that ZEB1 overexpression conferred to 22Rvl cell resistance to docetaxel while its silencing made DU145 cells more sensitive to it.Analysis of resistance markers showed no presenee of ATP-binding cassette subfamily B member 1(MDR1)and no changes in breast cancer resistance protein(BCRP)or ATP-binding cassette subfamily C member 10(MRP7).However,a correlation between ZEB1,multidrug resistance-associated protein 1(MRP1),and ATP-binding cassette subfamily C member 4(MRP4)expression was observed.MRP4 inhibition,using MK571,resensitized cells with ZEB1 overexpression to docetaxel treatment.In addition,modulation of ZEB1 and subsequent change in MRP4 expression correlated with a lower apoptotic response to docetaxel,characterized by lower B-cell lymphoma 2(Bcl2),high BCl2-associated X protein(Bax),and high active caspase 3 expression.The response to docetaxel in our model seems to be mediated mainly by activation of the apoptotic death program.Our results showed that modulation of MRP4 could be a mediator of ZEBl-related resistance to docetaxel in prostate cancer,making it a possible marker for chemotherapy response in patients who do not express MDR1.

An object that possesses chirality,that is,having its mirror image not overlayed on itself by rotation and translation,can provide a different optical response to a left-or right-handed circular polarized light.Chiral nanostructures may exhibit polarization-selective optical properties that can be controlled for micro-to-nano optical element engineering.An attractive way to induce such complex nanostructures in three-dimension in glass is femtosecond laser direct writing.However,the mechanism of femtosecond laser induced chirality remains to be unveiled due to complex physical and chemical processes occurring during the ultrashort light-matter interaction.Here,a phenomenological model is proposed and is built on two-layers phase shifters to account for this laser-induced optical chirality in an initially achiral material(silica glass).This model is based on the observation that femtosecond laser induced nanogratings own two principal contributions to its aggregate birefringent response:a form and a stress-related one.By refining this formalism,a multilayer approach is developed to imprint on demand optical rotation.Values up to+/-60°at 550 nm within an optimal 80μm thickness in silica glass are possible,corresponding to the highest value in a glass to date.These results provide new insights of circular-optical control in micro-nano optical manufacturing and open new opportunities for photonics applications.

In this study,the role of twin-twin interactions on the distributions of local defects(e.g.,dislocations)and stress fields in a magnesium alloy is investigated.A co-zone(1012)-(1012)tensile twin junction in a deformed Mg-3wt.%Y alloy is analyzed using transmission electron microscopy(TEM).The results show that the morphology of the impinging(1012)twin is asymmetric,and the non-interacting boundary of the recipient(1012)twin is irregular.Detailed analysis of TEM images reveals that type-II pyramidal[1213](1212)dislocations concentrate in the vicinity of the twin-twin junction site.The samedislocations are also observed inside the interacting twin domains along with a few dislocations.Thedislocations emanating from the impinging(1012)twin boundary have edge character and are extended with faults parallel to the basal plane.In contrast,thedislocations connected to the recipient(1012)twin are predominantly screw orientation and compact.Elasto-viscoplastic fast Fourier transform based crystal plasticity calculations are performed to rationalize the observed twin morphology and local dislocation distribution.The model calculations suggest that the local stress fields generated at the junction site where the two twins meet are responsible for the experimentally observed concentration ofdislocations.The calculated stress fields are asymmetric with respect to the junction site,explaining the observed asymmetric morphology of the impinging twin.Overall,these findings show strong effects of twin-twin interactions on the distribution of dislocations as well as the evolution of the twinned microstructure and as such,can help advance understanding of twinning in Mg alloys and their effect on mechanical behavior.
