The renin angiotensin system(RAS)appears to influence male fertility at multiple *** this work,we analyzed the relationship between the RAS and DNA *** male volunteers were divided into two groups(25 each):control(DNA fragmentation≤20%)and pathological(DNA fragmentation>20%)*** of five peptidases controlling RAS were measured fluorometrically:prolyl endopeptidase(which converts angiotensin[A]I and A II to A 1–7),neutral endopeptidase(NEP/CD10:A I to A 1–7),aminopeptidase N(APN/CD13:A III to A IV),aminopeptidase A(A II to A III)and aminopeptidase B(A III to A IV).Angiotensin-converting enzyme(A I to A II),APN/CD13 and NEP/CD10 were also assessed by semiquantitative cytometry and quantitative flow cytometry assays,as were the receptors of all RAS components:A II receptor type 1(AT1R),A II receptor type 2(AT2R),A IV receptor(AT4R or insulin-regulated aminopeptidase[IRAP]),(pro)renin receptor(PRR)and A 1–7 receptor or Mas receptor(MasR)None of the enzymes that regulate levels of RAS components,except for APN/CD13(decrease in fragmented cells),showed significant differences between both *** of RAS receptors revealed no significant differences in immunolabeling patterns between normozoospermic and fragmented *** of AT1R(94.3%normozoospermic vs 84.1%fragmented),AT4R(96.2%vs 95.3%)and MasR(97.4%vs 87.2%)was similar between the ***2R(87.4%normozoospermic vs 63.1%fragmented)and PRR(96.4%vs 48.2%)were higher in non-fragmented *** findings suggest that fragmented DNA spermatozoa have a lower capacity to respond to bioactive RAS peptides.

Although phylogenetically ancient,the olfactory system has received less attention than other sensorial ***,olfactory dysfunction is considered an early prodromal event in neurodegenerative diseases(NDs)(Doty,2012;Attems et al.,2014),which may vary from severe smell loss(e.g.,Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases)to relatively moderate loss(e.g.,progressive supranuclear palsy)(Doty,2017).Recently,a cluster of neuropathological and functional discoveries has evidenced the relevant role of the olfactory bulb(OB)during the neurodegenerative process(Attems et al.,2014;Rey et al.,2018).For instance,the double-transgenic APP/PS1 mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease(AD)develops early proteomic disturbances accompanied by a specific modulation of the focal adhesion kinase(FAK)and mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK)dynamics at the level of the OB,demonstrating that olfactory molecular alterations occur prior toβ-amyloid plaque appearance and memory impairments in APP/PS1 transgenic mice(Lachen-Montes et al.,2016).

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate treatment to promote neuroprotection and functional recovery after nervous system injury

Traumatic spinal cord injury （SCI） causes motor paralysis, sensory anesthesia and autonomic dysfunction below the le- sion site and additionally some SCI patients refer neuropathic pain together with these signs and symptoms. Clinical and experimental studies have revealed the main pathological changes of injured spinal cord implicated in all these signs and symptoms, including neuropathic pain. After few hours of traumatic SCI, it is usual to observe broken blood brain barrier with plasma and blood cells extravasation, cell necrosis, disruption of ascending and descending spinal cord pathways and increased potassium and glutamate. Glutamate contributes to excitotoxicity of neurons whereas potassium facilitates ectopic depolarization of survival neurons and activation of resident microglia.

An Ensemble Kalman Filter(EnKF)-based assimilation algorithm was implemented to estimate root-zone soil moisture(RZSM)using a Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer(SVAT)model during a complete growing season of corn in Central *** and field soil moisture(SM)observations and NASA SMAP SM retrievals were used to understand the effect of vertically spatial updates and uncertainties in meteorological forcings on RZSM *** of RZSM every 3 days using SM observations at 4 depths lowered the averaged standard deviation(ASD)and the root mean square error(RMSE)by 60%and 50%,respectively,compared to the open-loop *** assimilation of synthetic SM at the top 0-5 cm obtained RZSM closer to observations compared to THEXMEX-18 SM measurements and SMAP SM *** between EnKF estimates and SM observations and SMAP SM retrievals are mainly due to misrepresentation of vegetation *** results improved SM estimates up to 10-cm depth using SMAP SM retrievals;however,additional studies are needed to improve SM at deeper *** implemented methodology can estimate SM at the top 10 cm of the soil every 3 days to mitigate the impact of the climate change on agricultural production over rainfed areas,particularly in developing countries.

Synthesis and evaluation as CO2 chemisorbent of the Li5(Al1-xFex)O4 solid solution materials:Effect of oxygen addition

Pentalithium aluminate（β-LiAlO） and the corresponding iron-containing solid solution(Li(AlFe)O)were synthetized by solid-state reaction. All the samples were characterized structural and microstructurally by X-ray diffraction, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy, Nadsorption-desorption and temperature-programmed desorption of CO. Results showed that 30 mol% of iron can be incorporated into the β-LiAlOcrystalline structure at aluminum positions. Moreover, iron addition induced morphological and superficial reactivity variations. Li(AlFe)Osamples chemisorbed CObetween 200 and 700 °C, where the superficial chemisorption presented the highest enhancement,in comparison to β-LiAlO. Additionally, Li(AlFe)Osamples sintered at higher temperatures thanβ-LiAlO. Isothermal COchemisorption experiments of β-LiAlOand Li(AlFe)Owere fitted to a first order reaction model, corroborating that iron enhances the COchemisorption, kinetically. When oxygen was added to the gas flow, COchemisorption process was mainly enhanced between 400 and 600 °C for the Li(AlFe)Osample in comparison to β-LiAlO. Hence, Li(AlFe)Osolid solution presented an enhanced COchemisorption process, in the presence and absence of oxygen, in comparison to β-LiAlO.

Surfactant Assisted Dispersion and Adhesion Behavior of Carbon Nanotubes on Cu—Zr and Cu—Zr—Al Amorphous Powders

Carbon nanotubes （CNTs） were dispersed in gas atomized Cu47.5Zr47.5Al5 （CZA） and CusoZrso （CZ） amorphous powders, in an effort to elucidate the mechanisms of adhesion of CNTs onto amorphous metallic powders. CNTs were homogenously dispersed in water using a zwitterionic （ZW） surfactant. Then CZA and CZ powders were submersed in the ZW-CNTsuspensions with varying amounts of dwell time in an ultrasonic bath. The ZW-CNT- metal powder suspensions were dried, and CNT-metal composite powders were obtained after decomposition of the surfactant by calcination. Zeta potential measurements on ZW-CNT-metal powder suspensions and scanning electron microscopy investigation into the CNT-metal composite powders both indicated an ideal dwell time, for a specific alloy composition, of metallic powders in ZW-CNT suspension to achieve optimal adhesion of CNTs onto amorphous metallic powder surfaces. The results are rationalized on the basis of hydrolysis of metal ions into suspension creating a net positive charge on the metallic powder surfaces, and the interaction between the charged powder surfaces and the charged hydrophilic head groups of ZW, which has the other end attached to CNTs.

Whole-genome duplications are an important source of evolutionary novelties that change the mode and tempo at which genetic elements evolve within a genome. The Cucurbita genus experienced a wholegenome duplication around 30 million years ago, although the evolutionary dynamics of the coding and noncoding genes in this genus have not yet been scrutinized. Here, we analyzed the genomes of four Cucurbita species, in eluding a newly assembled genome of Cucurbita argyrosperma, and compared the gene con tents of these species with those of five other members of the Cucurbitaceae family to assess the evolutionary dynamics of protein-coding and long intergenic noncoding RNA (lincRNA) genes after the genome duplication. We report that Cucurbita genomes have a higher protein-coding gene birth-death rate compared with the genomes of the other members of the Cucurbitaceae family. C. argyrosperma gene families associated with pollination and transmembrane transport had significantly faster evolutionary rates. lincRNA families showed high levels of gene turnover throughout the phylogeny, and 67.7% of the lincRNA families in Cucurbita showed evidence of birth from the neofunctionalization of previously existing protein-coding genes. Collectively, our results suggest that the whole-genome duplication in Cucurbita resulted in faster rates of gene family evolution through the neofunctionalization of duplicated genes.

Polarimetry encompasses a collection of optical techniques broadly used in a variety of ***,such techniques have provided their suitability in the biomedical field through the study of the polarimetric response of biological samples(retardance,dichroism and depolarization)by measuring certain polarimetric *** of these features,depolarization,is mainly produced by scattering on samples,which is a predominant efiect in turbid media as biological *** turn,retardance and dichroic efiects are produced by tissue anisotropies and can lead to depolarization *** depolarization is a predominant efiect in tissue samples,we focus on studying difierent depolarization metrics for biomedical *** report the suitability of a set of depolarizing observables,the indices of polarimetric purity(IPPs),for biological tissue *** review some results where we demonstrate that IPPs lead to better performance than the depolarization index,which is a well-established and commonly used depolarization observable in the *** also provide how IPPs are able to significantly enhance contrast between difierent tissue structures and even to reveal structures hidden by using standard intensity ***,we also explore the classificatory potential of IPPs and other depolarizing observables for the discrimination of difierent tissues obtained from ex vivo chicken samples(muscle,tendon,myotendinous junction and bone),reaching accurate models for tissue classification.

We present a low-cost and easy-to-implement technique to fabricate large-area WS_(2) photodetector devices onto transparent and flexible polycarbonate *** method relies on the deposition of large-area(in the cm scale)thin films(~30 nm thick)of WS_(2) by a recently introduced abrasion-induced *** electrical contacts are then deposited by thermal evaporation through a shadow *** photodetectors present well-balanced performances with an good trade-off between responsivity(up to 144 mA/W at a source-drain voltage of 10 V and illumination power of 1μW)and response time(down to~70µs)and a detectivity value of 10^(8) *** found that the devices perform very reversibly upon several illumination and straining cycles and we found a moderate device-to-device variation.
