Paraoxonase-1(PON-1)is an enzyme that hydrolyzes organophosphate *** presence of polymorphisms in PON-1(L55M and Q192R)decreases its enzyme activity and increases the risk of central nervous system(CNS)toxicity in occupationally exposed farmers,leading to chronic degenerative diseases and *** studied 103 farmers in the region of Cienega Jalisco,Mexico,which were exposed mainly to organophosphate *** used serum and plasma samples to assay PON-1 activity and perform polymorphism analysis(L55M and Q192R)using qPCR and TaqMan probes,*** both polymorphisms,there was high percentage of heterozygosity(55 LL=0.19,LM=0.75,MM=0.06;192 QQ=0.12,QR=0.72,RR=0.16),while the allelic frequencies were more balanced(L=0.56,M=0.44;Q=0.48,R=0.52).There were no significant differences in enzyme activity of L55M polymorphism genotypes(LL=179.27;LM=192.11;MM=122.11;QQ=135.74;QR=187.90;RR=209;p>0.05).But there was a slight decrease in enzyme activity for the Q192R polymorphism *** genotype and alcohol consumption associated with slight increases in enzyme ***,genotype and tobacco consumption did not have a significant effect on PON-1 activity(μU/mL)(p>0.05).Overall,alcohol and tobacco consumption affected PON-1 enzyme activity(μU/mL)up to 21.1%.The data obtained in this study reveal that PON-1 activity is affected by genetic variants such as Q192R and alcohol *** may influence the susceptibility of populations to organophosphate poisoning.

Interannual Variability of the NDVI in East Africa during 1983-2022 and the Climate Impact

The interannual variability of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) over East Africa demonstrates the complex interactions between vegetation dynamics and climatic factors. This study, which spans the period from 1983 to 2022, makes use of data from NOAA, ERA5, and CRU. It employs a range of statistical techniques, including the calculation of standardized anomalies, significance testing, composites and correlation analyses. The results demonstrated an increase in NDVI over regions including Kenya, Central and Northeastern Tanzania during wet years, with significantly higher NDVI compared to drought years. Conversely, regions such as Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and parts of western and southern Tanzania exhibited lower NDVI during wet years than in drought years, thereby underscoring the existence of significant regional differences in vegetation responses to climatic conditions. The results of the correlation analysis indicated that there was a negative correlation between NDVI and SLHF, air temperature, and soil temperature, while positive correlations were observed between NDVI and SSHF, precipitation, and soil moisture. Furthermore, teleconnections with large-scale climate indices demonstrated modest correlations: Niño 3.4 (r = 0.33), DMI (r = 0.11), and AMO (r = 0.03). These findings emphasize the pivotal role of climatic and meteorological factors in influencing vegetation dynamics, offering insights for sustainable land management and climate adaptation strategies in East Africa.

Influence of Fermentation and Drying Practices on the Ochratoxin A Content of Cocoa Beans from the Main Production Areas in Côte d’Ivoire

Côte d’Ivoire has been the world’s leading producer of cocoa beans for several decades. Apart from this production performance, the quality of the beans, which are mainly exported to the major chocolate-making countries, presents a quality problem to the point of suffering a discount on the international market. One of these quality problems is the content of ochratoxin A, a mycotoxin produced by fungi. Finally, to verify the level of contamination in beans produced in Côte d’Ivoire, a study was carried out. It consisted of collecting information on fermentation and drying times (The two major post-harvest operations) and collecting beans, which were analyzed by electrophoresis using the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method. The results obtained show ochratoxin A contents of between 0.05 µg/kg and 0.17 µg/kg. The general level of contamination is therefore very low and below the tolerable limit which is 2 µg/kg. In addition, the correlative study between the fermentation and drying times of the beans revealed no significant influence (p < 0.01) of the duration of these operations on the level of ochratoxin A contamination. Major contamination can occur after post-harvest activities carried out by producers. This is certainly due to the development of fungi responsible for the production of ochratoxin A during the period of storage and marketing of cocoa beans in conditions of high humidity in storage enclosures. Producers need to be made more aware of the need to ensure that cocoa beans are properly dried and stored in dry areas to avoid moisture build-up, which is a source of mould growth and ochratoxin A production.

Integrating autonomous vehicles (AVs) and autonomous parking spaces (APS) marks a transformative development in urban mobility and sustainability. This paper reflects on these technologies’ historical evolution, current interdependence, and future potential through the lens of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Historically, parking systems evolved from manual designs to automated processes yet remained focused on convenience rather than sustainability. Presently, advancements in smart infrastructure and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication have enabled AVs and APS to operate as a cohesive system, optimizing space, energy, and transportation efficiency. Looking ahead, the seamless integration of AVs and APS into broader smart city ecosystems promises to redefine urban landscapes by repurposing traditional parking infrastructure into multifunctional spaces and supporting renewable energy initiatives. These technologies align with global sustainability goals by mitigating emissions, reducing urban sprawl, and fostering adaptive land uses. This reflection highlights the need for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to address regulatory and technological challenges, ensuring the equitable and efficient deployment of AVs and APS for smarter, greener cities.

The Prevalence, Patterns, and Trend of Antimicrobial Resistance among Patients at Kumi Orthopaedic Center: A Retrospective Study

Background: Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) has been recognized as a global public health problem of utmost importance that needs to be tackled. Low-income countries such as Uganda have the greatest burden of severe and life-threatening infections and are most likely to suffer more from the spread of untreatable resistant bacteria. Despite the generally increasing trends in AMR, there is hardly any documented data on AMR in orthopedic care. Methods: We analyzed data from the pathogenic isolates from pus and tissue from the laboratory from 2019 to 2023. We calculated the proportions of isolates resistant to commonly used antimicrobial classes. We used the chi-square test for trends to evaluate changes in AMR across the study period. Results: Out of the 286 isolates, 104 (43.5%) were from pus, 112 (46.9%) were from tissue samples and the remaining 9.6% were from different fluid aspirates like synovial fluid. Most of the isolates were from males (64.2%) and aged between 19 and 45 years (46.2%). The distribution of whether the bacteria were gram-positive or negative was relatively equal with 114 (45.2%) being gram-negative and 120 (47.6%) gram-positive. Generally, there was increased AMR across all antibiotics from 2019 to 2021 e.g. for Imipinem, it went from 0% in 2019 to 70.8% in 2021 and for Amoxyclav, it went from 10% in 2019 to 93.2% in 2021. There was a general decline in AMR noted from 2021 to 2023. However, currently, the highest resistance is noted in ceftriaxone (80.0%) and the lowest in Imipinem (11.76%). Conclusion: There is a general decreasing trend in AMR, most probably due to increasing policies governing the use of antibiotics. However, there is still high resistance to commonly used and affordable antibiotics. Continuous monitoring of AMR is still recommended to reduce the AMR problem in Uganda at large through public health policy and planning.

This article is part of the ongoing study of the moderate geomagnetic activity of corotation. The aim here is to examine ionospheric anomalies through variations in Total Electronic Content (TEC) recorded at the Koudougou GPS station over solar cycle 24 during periods of corotation activity. Through the diurnal variations by solar phase, we observed a TEC peak at 14:00 TL. The TEC data analysed revealed winter, annual and semi-annual anomalies. However, the equinoctial anomaly was insignificant during corotation activity at the Koudougou station during solar cycle 24.
