Mecha.ica. properties of uka., ba.a.a. sisa., coconut, hemp a.d e-gla.s fibre reinforced la.ina.es were eva.ua.ed to a.sess the possibility of using it a. new ma.eria. in engineering a.plica.ions. Sa.ples were fa.rica.ed by the ha.d la.-up process (30:70 fibre a.d ma.rix ra.io by weight) a.d the properties eva.ua.ed using the INSTRON ma.eria. testing system. The mecha.ica. properties were tested a.d showed tha. gla.s la.ina.e ha. the ma.imum tensile strength of 63 MPa. bending strength of 0.5 MPa. compressive strength of 37.75 MPa.a.d the impa.t strength of 17.82 J/m2. The uka. pla.t fibre la.ina.e ha. the ma.imum tensile strength of 16.25 MPa.a.d the impa.t strength of 9.8J/m a.ong the na.ura. fibres;the sisa. la.ina.e ha. the ma.imum compressive strength of 42 MPa.a.d ma.imum bending strength of 0.0036 MPa.a.ong the na.ura. fibres. Results indica.ed tha. na.ura. fibres a.e of interest for low-cost engineering a.plica.ions a.d ca. compete with a.tificia. gla.s fibres (E-gla.s fibre) when a.high stiffness per unit weight is desira.le. Results a.so indica.ed tha. future resea.ch towa.ds significa.t improvements in tensile a.d impa.t strength of these types of composites should focus on the optimisa.ion of fibre strength ra.her tha. interfa.ia. bond strength.
