The native range of ctenosaura similis extends from southern Mexico through Panama. From an initial introduction of 3 animals in 1979, the species now numbers in the thousands on Gasparilla Island in southwest Florida. In response to complaints of property damage from residents and threats to native species, local officials and the US Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services began a removal program in 2008. Through 2011, trappers removed 9467 ctenosaurs. The number removed declined from 32 iguanas/day in 2008 to 1.9 iguanas/day in 2011 despite no easing of the control effort. We necropsied 2757 ctenosaurs to document aspects of their natural history. Females outnumbered males overall, although the largest size class (>300 mm snout-vent length) included 32 males and just 2 females. Reproduction was seasonal. We found oviducal eggs in females from early Apr to early Jun, approximately 2 months later than c. similis in its native range. We trapped hatchlings from late Jul to early Oct coincident with the summer rainy season. clutch size increased with female body size, with 62 being the largest clutch size recorded. In general, the biology of the invasive population on Gasparilla Island resembles native c. similis populations in central America, except for the lack of large individuals. We suggest that shorter day length and colder temperatures create environmental conditions that are suboptimal for individual growth compared to those in the native range.

Hispanic Americans of caribbean origin are a fast-growing subset of the US population, but there are no studies on bone density, microstructure and biomechanical integrity in this minority group. In this study, we aimed to compare caucasian and caribbean Hispanic postmenopausal American women with respect to these characteristics. Thirty-three caribbean Hispanics were age-matched to thirty-three caucasian postmenopausal women. At the lumbar spine, the Hispanic women had significantly lower areal bone mineral density （aBMD）. At the radius by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography （HR-pQcT）, there were minimal differences between Hispanic and caucasian women. At the tibia, Hispanic women had lower trabecular volumetric bone density and trabecular number, and higher trabecular separation. Individual trabecula segmentation （ITS） analyses indicated that at the tibia, Hispanic women not only had significantly lower bone volume fraction, but also had significantly lower rod bone volume fraction, plate trabecular number, rod trabecular number and lower plate-plate, plate-rod and rod-rod junction densities compared to caucasian women. The differences in bone quantity and quality contributed to lower whole bone stiffness at the radius, and both whole bone and trabecular bone stiffness at the tibia in Hispanic women. In conclusion, Hispanic women had poorer bone mechanical and microarchitectural properties than caucasian women, especially at the load-bearing distal tibia.

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV)for forest monitoring has grown significantly in recent years,providing information with high spatial resolution and temporal *** with multispectral sensors allow the use of indexes such as the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),which determines the vigor,physiological stress and photo synthetic activity of *** study aimed to analyze the spectral responses and variations of NDVI in tree crowns,as well as their correlation with climatic factors over the course of one *** study area encompassed a 1.6-ha site in Durango,Mexico,where Pinus cembroides,Pinus engelmannii,and Quercus grisea *** images were acquired with UAV and information on meteorological variables was obtained from NASA/POWER *** ANOVA explored possible differences in NDVI among the three *** correlation was performed to identify the linear relationship between NDVI and meteorological *** differences in NDVI values were found at the genus level(Pinus and Quercus),possibly related to the physiological features of the species and their *** grisea had the lowest NDVI values throughout the year which may be attributed to its sensitivity to relative humidity and *** the use of UAV with a multispectral sensor for NDVI monitoring allowed genera differentiation,in more complex forest analyses hyperspectral and LiDAR sensors should be integrated,as well other vegetation indexes be considered.

Using a phylogenomic approach, we have identified and subciassified a new family of carotenoid-binding proteins. These proteins have sequence homology to the N-terminal domain （NTD） of the Orange carotenoid Protein （OcP）, and are referred to as Helical carotenoid Proteins （HcPs）. These proteins comprise at least nine distinct ciades and are found in diverse organisms, frequently as multiple paralogs representing the distinct ciades. These seem to be out-paralogs maintained from ancient duplications associated with subfunctionalization. All of the HcPs share conservation of the residues for carotenoid binding, and we confirm that carotenoid binding is a fundamental property of HcPso We solved two crystal structures of the Nostoc sp. Pcc 7120 HcP1 protein, each binding a different carotenoid, suggesting that the proteins flexibly bind a range of carotenoids. Based on a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis, we propose that one of the HcP subtypes is likely the evolutionary ancestor of the NTD of the OcP, which arose following a domain fusion evenS. However, we predict that the majority of HcPs have functions distinct from the NTD of the OcP. Our results demonstrate that the HcPs are a new family of functionally diverse carotenoid-binding proteins found among ecophysiologically diverse cyanobacteria.

Pharmacological studies reveal APP and Aβ have interactions with glutamate and calcium, cytokines, copper/zinc chelators, secretases and presenilins, nicotinic receptors, acetycholinesterase, neurotrophins, non-steroidal anti-inflame-matory drugs, monoclonal antibodies to Aβ, protease inhibitors, oestrogen, homocysteine, immediate early genes such as c-fos or c-jun and cholesterol. These functional and pharmacological observations highlight the need for greater understanding of APP and Aβ in brain function and have implications for clinical trials.

将性能稳定且便于临床应用的生物标志物应用于癌症诊断、早期检测和预测预后可提高患者生存率,也是精准医学的关键所在。第二代测序技术可以更加灵敏而全面地分析肿瘤来源的材料的遗传和表观遗传信息。现在,研究人员能够在新的维度上监测肿瘤发生的动态变化,例如使用循环无细胞DNA(circulating cell-free DNA,cf DNA)和循环肿瘤DNA(circulating tumor DNA,ctDNA)。基于突变分析的液体活检通常无法在不同研究中得到一致的结果,部分原因在于肿瘤内和肿瘤间的异质性以及技术的限制。相比之下,患者来源的cf DNA的表观遗传分析是一个很有前景的替代方案,特别是对于早期检测和疾病监测,因为表观遗传修饰是组织特异性的,并且反映了癌症进展的动态过程。因此,基于cf DNA的表观遗传分析正成为癌症诊断和预后预测的高灵敏度且微创的手段,在未来癌症患者的精准护理中具有巨大潜力。然而,应用cf DNA的表观遗传分析的主要障碍是缺乏具有高灵敏度和稳定性的技术。我们在本文中总结了cf DNA中5-羟甲基-胞嘧啶(5-hydroxymethylcytosine,5hmc)的表观基因组分析的研究进展,重点关注其对不同癌症类型的检测方法和作为生物标志物的潜在应用。
