Metagenomics and bacter.al cultur. wer. used to deter.ine the nor.al skin micr.biome of the Wester. mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). This is the fir.t study of G. affinis, and the most in-depth study of any fish skin, utilizing a combination of 16S pr.file pyr.sequencing and cultur. analysis. Over.1800 sequences obtained fr.m thr.e individuals r.veal that over.half of all sequences come fr.m five invar.ant gener., Acinetobacter. Sphingomonas, Acidovor.x, Enhydr.bacter. and Aquabacter.um. The micr.biome is diver.e but has low equitability, with a total of 81 gener. detected. Challenge studies suggest that non-native bacter.a cannot colonize the skin. This definition of the nor.al skin micr.biome lays the foundation for.futur. studies with this model system.
