Colorectal cancer(CRC) is a devastating disease, mainly because of metastasis. As a result, there is a need to better understand the molecular basis of invasion and metastasis and to identify new biomarkers and therapeutic targets to aid in managing these tumors. The actin cytoskeleton and actin-binding proteins are known to play an important role in the process of cancer metastasis because they control and execute essential steps in cell motility and contractility as well as cell division. Caldesmon(CaD) is an actin-binding protein encoded by the CALD1 gene as multiple transcripts that mainly encode two protein isoforms: High-molecular-weight CaD, expressed in smooth muscle, and low-molecular weight CaD(l-CaD), expressed in nonsmooth muscle cells. According to our comprehensive review of the literature, CaD, particularly l-CaD, plays a key role in the development, metastasis, and resistance to chemoradiotherapy in colorectal, breast, and urinary bladder cancers and gliomas, among other malignancies. CaD is involved in many aspects of the carcinogenic hallmarks, including epithelial mesenchymal transition via transforming growth factor-beta signaling, angiogenesis, resistance to hormonal therapy, and immune evasion. Recent data show that CaD is expressed in tumor cells as well as in stromal cells, such as cancerassociated fibroblasts, where it modulates the tumor microenvironment to favor the tumor. Interestingly, CaD undergoes selective tumor-specific splicing, and the resulting isoforms are generally not expressed in normal tissues, making these transcripts ideal targets for drug design. In this review, we will analyze these features of CaD with a focus on CRC and show how the currently available data qualify CaD as a potential candidate for targeted therapy in addition to its role in the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer.

Liver stiffness as a predictor of hepatocellular carcinoma behavior in patients with hepatitis C related liver cirrhosis

Background: Risk strati cation and prognostication of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) help to improve patient outcome. Herein we investigated the role of liver stiffness measurement (LSm) in the prediction of HCC behavior. methods: Totally 121 na ve patients with HCC were included. HCC radiological evaluation and staging were done. LSm was measured using virtual touch quanti cation. Patients were divided into early to intermediate HCC (BCLC-0, A and B) and late HCC (BCLCC and D). HCC was treated according to the BCLC stage. HCC recurrence-free interval was estimated. Results: The mean LSm inside the tumor was signi cantly lower than the peri-tumoral area and the cirrhotic non-cancerous liver parts (Pmean LSm inside the tumor and in the peri-tumoral tissue was lower than the corresponding values in the early to intermediate HCCs stage (Pm inside the tumor and in the peri-tumoral tissue negatively correlated with serum AFP, tumor vascular invasion, and stage (Pm inside the tumor and inversely to LSm in cirrhotic non tumorous liver part. Kaplan-meier analysis showed that the recurrence-free interval was signi cantly longer in patients with LSm inside the tumor of ≥1.25m/s compared to those with LSm inside the tumor ofm/s. Conclusions: LSm can serve as a potential non-invasive predictor for HCC clinical behavior and the recurrence-free interval following loco-regional treatments.

The synthesis and characterization of new transition metal complexes of mn（ll）, Co（II）, Ni（II）, Cu（II） and Zn（II） with 3-（2-hydroxynaph-l-ylazo）-1,2,4-triazole （HL1） and 3-（2-hydroxy-3-carboxynaph-l-ylazo）-1,2,4-triazole （HL2） have been carried out. Their structures were confirmed by elemental analyses, thermal analyses, spectral and magnetic data. The IR and 1H NmR spectra indicated that HL1 and HL2 coordinated to the metal ions as bidentate monobasic ligands via the hydroxyl O and azo N atoms. The UV-Vis, ESR spectra and magnetic moment data revealed the formation of octahedral complexes [mnL1（AcO）（H2O）3] （1）, [CoL1（AcO）（HzO）3]·H2O （2）, [mnL2- （AcO）（H20）3] （6） and [CoL2（AcO）（H2O）3] （7）, [NiL1（AcO）（H2O）] （3）,[ZnLI（AcO）（HzO）]·H2O （5）, [NiL2- （AcO）（H2O）] （8）, [ZnL2（AcO）（H2O）]·H2O （10） have tetrahedral geometry, whereas [CuLI（AcO）（H2O）2] （4） and [CuL2（AcO）（H2O）2]·5H2O （9） have square pyramidal geometry.. The mass spectra of the complexes under EI-con- ditions showed the highest peaks corresponding to their molecular weights, based on the atomic weights of 55mn, 59Co, 58Ni, 63Cu and 64Zn isotopes; besides, other peaks containing other isotopes distribution of the metal. Kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the thermal decomposition stages were computed from the thermal data using Coats-Redfern method. HL2 and complexes 6--10 were found to have moderate antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus＇ aureus （gram positive）, Escherichia coli （gram negative） and Salmonella sp bacteria, and antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. Also, in most cases, metallation increased the activity compared with the free ligand.

Effect of biochar on fate and transport of manure-borne estrogens in sandy soil

The feasibility of using two types of biochars to reduce steroid hormone pollution from poultry and swine manure application on agricultural land was evaluated. The sorption affinity and desorption resistance of softwood and hardwood biochars were also determined for two estrogen hormones, 17β-estradiol （E2） and its primary metabolite estrone （E1）. The softwood and hardwood biochars demonstrated high retention capacity for both estrogens. The effective distribution coefficient （Kedff） of soil-softwood-derived biochar （SBS450） was significantly higher than soil-hardwood-derived biochar （SBH750）, indicating the stronger sorption affinity of SBS450 for estrogens. To validate the laboratory results, a field lysimeter experiment was conducted to study the fate and transport of E2 and E1 in soil and leachate in the presence of 1% softwood-biochar （BS450） in topsoil and to compare it with soil without any amendments. The spatio-temporal distribution of both estrogens was monitored at four depths over a 46-day period. The lysimeters, in which the surface layer of soil was amended with biochar, retained significantly higher concentrations of both estrogen hormones. Although they leached through the soil and were detected in leachates, collected at 1.0 m depth, the concentrations were significantly lower in the leachate collected from biochar-amended lysimeters. The result confirmed the efficacy of biochar amendment as a remediation technique to alleviate the manure-borne hormonal pollution of groundwater.

Background:The increasing occurrence of diabetes mellitus(Dm)noted worldwide has considerably elicited concern in the recent *** is associated with elevated vascular complications,morbidity,mortality,and poor quality of *** this context,mesenchymal stem cells(mSCs)have shown significant therapeutic potentialities in managing and curing type 1 Dm owing to their self-renewable,immunosuppressive,and differentiation *** investigated the potential action of N,N′-diphenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine(DPPD),a well-known synthetic antioxidant to enhance the therapeutic ability of the adipose-derived stem cells(AD-mSCs)in alleviating kidney and liver complications in diabetic ***:Over the four weeks of experiments,albino male rats(n=36)were split into six test groups:control,DPPD(250 mg/kg,i.p.),STZ-diabetic(D),D+DPPD,D+AD-mSCs(1×10^(6)cell/rat,i.v.),and D+AD-mSCs+DPPD treated ***:Significant declines in the renal and hepatic oxidative stress markers(mDA,ROS,and AGEs)were observed coupled with a significant elevation in many antioxidant marker levels(GSH,SOD,CAT,GPx,HO-1,and TAC)in the diabetic rats treated with either DPPD or AD-mSCs or their co-administered injection compared to the diabetic untreated *** was suggested to be the leading cause of amelioration of the kidney functions(as measured by urea,uric acid,and creatine levels)and liver functions(as evidenced by the levels of AST,ALT,ALP,bilirubin,total proteins,albumin,and globulins).Conclusion:DPPD and AD-mSCs co-administration showed superior results in terms of the enhancement of the relative hepato-renal function,indicating the beneficial role of DPPD supplementation in increasing the therapeutic potential of AD-mSCs.

Objectives:Chronic renal failure affects the physiological,psychological,functional ability,and independent status of the patient,which might result in a burden to the family members caring for *** objective of the study was to identify caregivers'level of burden and establish the impact of educational intervention programs on caregiving ***:This was a one-group pre-test post-test study conducted between April and August 2017 on family caregivers of hemodialysis patients.A convenient sample of 169 caregivers was used.A sociodemographic questionnaire,the OBCS,and BCOS were utilized for data collection,which occurred at baseline and two weeks *** collected data were analyzed using SPSS where t-test determined the impact of the ***:Caregivers were found to be moderately burdened(m=2.73,SD=0.23)and their lives had changed for the worst as a result of caregiving(m=3.17,SD=5.89).There were significant differences in caregiving outcome scores before and after the intervention(Pmodialysis adds extra responsibilities to the caregivers'schedule thus leaving them substantially *** caregivers on the required care eased their burden and improved caregiving *** are made that healthcare professionals should assess caregiver burden,and address their physical and mental health *** should also be regularly educated on the regular caregiving tasks to ease their burden.

Objective: The aim of the present study is to discriminate functions for sex determination in a subjected sample of the Egyptian population using the morphology of metacarpals and phalanges for gender comparison. Furthermore, the measurements discussed in this study will aid in predicting the differentiation independently and guaranteeing sex determination in the subjected population individually. methods: Forty measurements were taken from the right metacarpals and phalangeal bones of 100 subjects, whose ages ranged from 19 to 60. moreover, the measurements of nine metacarpals and four phalangeal bones were used for sex discrimination in each sample population. Results: males had significantly greater mean values (P metacarpals and the proximal phalangeal bones of all right-hand fingers than females. The cut-off value and the accuracy percentage for precise sex classification of males and females using individual and grouped bones showed that a value higher than the marking point classified an individual as male and that a lower value suggested female. Besides, the multiple stepwise discriminant functional analysis of the most predictable internal variables of the metacarpals revealed a cross-validated sex classification accuracy of 100%. In contrast, the most predictable internal variables of the phalanges showed a cross-validated sex classification accuracy of 93%. Conclusion: The results revealed a new forensic suggestion for the determination of sex based on the measurements of the metacarpals and the phalanges. moreover, various discriminant equations were applied for the declaration of this conceivable recommendation.
