Hyaluronidase enzyme (HysA) is an extracellular enzyme that is considered to be an important virulence factor for Staphylococcus aureus. We screened the production of HysA enzyme in the spent media of Egyptian clinical isolates (32 isolates) via phenotypic plate assay. We found that 75% of the isolates (24 isolates) were able to produce HysA enzyme. We designed primers for qPCR analysis of hysA mRNA expression that was derived from the alignment of hysA gene sequences of 41 strains of S. aureus. The designed primers could be used for the amplification of hysA in 79.2% of the isolates (19 isolates) that were positive for HysA production as demonstrated by phenotypic plate assay. A significant positive correlation, as indicated by Pearson correlation analysis (r = 0.84 at P eliable quantitative method for hysA expression analysis particularly in infected animal models of S. aureus.

Bt corn “MON810: Ajeeb YG” produces delta endotoxins in the whole plant due to the genetic modification process. The chemical analysis of this variety showed significant differences from its conventional counterpart “Ajeeb”. Further, feeding studies on rats were designed to complete assessing the safety of “MON810: Ajeeb YG”. Three groups of rats (6 males and 6 females’ rats/group) were fed on control diet, non-Bt corn and Bt corn for 1.5 months and 3 months. After 1.5 months, 3 males and 3 females from each group were sacrificed, and after another 1.5 months, 3 males and 3 females from each group and their offspring were sacrificed. Histopathological examination, blood haematology and serum biochemical analysis were determined. Results indicated significant differences among the tested parameters in the three groups especially Bt group. Severe changes in the liver of Bt group after 3 months were observed.

Egypt suffers from the impacts of climate change. Adaption plans should solve the shortage in water resources and increase the use of renewable energy. Detailed data on rainfall as non conventional water and detailed data on potential renewable energy are important. The added value of this research is to investigate the suitability of satellite data locally in North Sinai in Egypt. The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellites and available data from ground rain gauges are studied at North Sinai of Egypt. Local multiplication factors and correlation equations on a monthly basis were developed based on short term historical data. General equation based on short term data was developed to enhance TRMM data for the rainy season to minimize spatial and temporal errors. This equation would be very useful, especially in the ungauged areas in North Sinai to adjust TRMM rainfall data. TRMM data are spatially distributed, so it enhances the hydrology models for runoff estimation. This runoff could be used as non conventional water resource. The runoff was estimated in the RasSudr area in the 2010 storm to be 3.6 (m3/s). The hydropower of this runoff was estimated and ranged from 15,135 to 57,352 (kWh). The solar energy is studied from (NASA) satellite data. The monthly averaged solar energy was estimated to get possible generated power from the solar panel at locations of rainfall ground stations. The generated solar energy would supply self-sufficient energy for ground stations measuring instruments rather than batteries. The results show that a small solar panel project of 200 (m2) could safe electric network power by generating about 20,385 (kWh/year). The results of this study could help in enhancing adapting plans for climate change and runoff estimation model that needs grid data, especially in the area lacking ground data.

Impact of Cystic versus Cylindrical Types of Bronchiectasis on Pulmonary and Cardiac Functions

Background: The combination of the clinical features, HRCT score and echocardiographic evidence of pulmonary hypertension help assess the prognosis in bronchiectasis. Aim: To test whether pulmonary and cardiac functions associated with bronchiectasis would differ according to its type (cystic versus cylindrical) utilizing HRCT score, PFTs and echocardiography. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional study of patients with bronchiectasis was conducted at Chest and Internal Medicine Departments at Assiut University Hospital, Egypt. The diagnosis of bronchiectasis type was based on HRCT findings. PFTs, HRCT score and echocardiography were assessed in all cases. Results: We studied 56 patients with bronchiectasis;31 were cystic (group A) and 25 were cylindrical (group B). Forced vital capacity (FVC%) and Dlco% were significantly lower in group A (P as compared with group B;whereas FEF 25%-75% and FEV1 (0.04) were lower in group B. Global HRCT score, RVD and SPAP were significantly higher in group A (P = 0.002) and correlated with FEV1% (r = ?0.51), and with SPAP (r = 0.16). Conclusions: Airway obstruction and small airway dysfunction were more significantly seen in cylindrical bronchiectasis. Patients with cystic bronchiectasis had significantly, higher global HRCT scores, RVD and SPAP. HRCT scores correlate with FEV 1% and SPAP and could be a predictor of future PH. Routine echocardiographic assessment of patients with bronchiectasis, particularly in those with cystic disease is highly recommended.

Three hundred and eleven honeybee samples from 12 countries in the Middle East and North Africa （MENA）（Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Yemen, Palestine, and Sudan） were analyzed for the presence of deformed wing virus （DWV）. The prevalence of DWV throughout the MENA region was pervasive, but variable. The highest prevalence was found in Lebanon and Syria, with prevalence dropping in Palestine, Jordan, and Egypt before increasing slightly moving westwards to Algeria and Morocco Phylogenetic analysis of a 194 nucleotide section of the DWV Lp gene did not identify any significant phylogenetic resolution among the samples, although the sequences did show consistent regional clustering, including an interesting geographic gradient from Morocco through North Africa to Jordan and Syria. The sequences revealed several clear variability hotspots in the deduced amino acid sequence, which furthermore showed some patterns of regional identity. Furthermore, the sequence variants from the Middle East and North Africa appear more numerous and diverse than those from Europe.

Assessment of Predictors for Early Resistance to Hepatitis C Virus Treatment

The current standard of treatment for HCV is the combination of pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN) and ribavirin (RBV). Response to therapy is influenced by different factors related to virus or host characteristics. In this study we detected HCV genotype in some patients with chronic HCV infection—who received interferon plus ribavirin therapy and evaluating some risk factors in early resistance to treatment. These risk factors included age, gender, ALT& AST levels, HCV viral load & genotype. This study included 60 patients with chronic HCV infection and subjected to PEG-INF plus RBV therapy. 40 (gp I) had developed resistance after 12 weeks;while group II are the responders. on comparing patients in group I n = 40 (who developed resistance) to patients in group 2, no = 20 (responders), it has been found that the most important risk factors for developing resistance are the increased viral load of HCV-RNA, and ***-genotype as a risk factor was significantly higher among cases with genotype 1 and 4 and P value was 0.004. This was followed by ALT and AFP as risk factors with P value 0.004 for each and age with P value 0.026. However, regarding sex of the patients there was no significant difference between group I and II. In conclusion: the most frequent HCV genotype in resistant group were genotype I and IV, while in responder patient were genotype 2 & 3. The most important risk factor in this study is viral load and HCV genotype.

Long-term outcomes in patients initially responsive to selective laser trabeculoplasty

AIMTo determine the long-term effects of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) on intraocular pressure (IOP) and the number of medications used up to 5y following treatment in glaucoma patients receiving maximally tolerated medical therapy (MTMT).METHODSThe Wills Eye Hospital Glaucoma Research Center retrospectively reviewed the charts of glaucoma patients who underwent SLT after receiving MTMT. Eyes that did not achieve their target pressure within 3mo following SLT were excluded from the study. Changes in mean IOP and number of glaucoma medications used were analyzed at 1, 3, and 5y following ***-five eyes of 67 patients were included in the study. Fifteen eyes that received SLT failed to achieve their target pressure within 3mo and were excluded from the study. The average follow-up time was 37.4mo (±14.4). Mean IOP was significantly reduced 1y after treatment (P=0.005). It was also reduced 3, 5y after treatment without reaching statistical significance (P=0.20 and P=0.072, respectively). There was a significant decrease in mean number of medications used 1, 3, 5y after treatment (Pely). In the span of 5y, 2 eyes (2.7%) underwent repeat SLT, 7 eyes (9.3%) underwent glaucoma surgery and an additional 3 eyes (4.0%) underwent *** significantly reduced the number of glaucoma medications used 5y following treatment in glaucoma patients receiving MTMT. SLT may delay operating-room surgery.
