Agronomic and Productivity Performance for Quinoa Genotypes in an Agroecological and Conventional Production System

The objective of this research was to evaluate the agronomic performance and productivity of sixteen genotypes of Chenopodium quinoa cultivated in agroecological and conventional production systems. The evaluations were carried out, based on agronomic characteristics and yields of sixteen C. quinoa genotypes, grown in two simultaneous experiments, in an agroecological production and a conventional production system carried out at the town of Entre Rios do Oeste, Paraná, Brazil in the harvest 2015/16. Each experiment was composed of three replicates, following the randomized block design. Number of plants in flowering, number of plants per linear meter, height of insertion of the first panicle, number of days for maturation and productivity were the parameters evaluated. The data were submitted to statistical analysis with the aid of the GENES computational application. Genotype Q13-24 showed a more suitable production for the conventional production system. While the genotype Q13-01, presented the increase of productivity, being more indicated to the system of agroecological production. The characteristics height of plant flowers (HPF) and height of insertion of the first panicle (HIP) had higher values when the plants were cultivated in a conventional system. The number of plants per linear meter (NPLM) was higher in the agroecological crop, when compared to conventional cultivation. The same quinoa genotype can behave differently depending on the area management, being a productivity and the genotype cycle depends on the production system and the genotype used.

Follow-up of intestinal metaplasia in the stomach: When, how and why

Gastric cancer remains the second most frequent cause of cancer-related mortality in the world. Screening programs in some Asian countries are impractical in the majority of other countries worldwide. Therefore, follow-up of precancerous lesions is advisable for secondary gastric cancer prevention. Intestinal metaplasia (IM) is recognized as a precancerous lesion for gastric cancer, increasing the risk by 6-fold. IM is highly prevalent in the general population, being detected in nearly 1 of every 4 patients undergoing upper endoscopy. The IM prevalence rate is significantly higher in patients with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, in first-degree relatives of gastric cancer patients, in smokers and it increases with patient age. IM is the "breaking point" in the gastric carcinogenesis cascade and does not appear to regress following H. pylori eradication, although the cure of infection may slow its progression. Gastric cancer risk is higher in patients with incomplete-type IM, in those with both antral and gastric body involvement, and the risk significantly increases with IM extension over 20% of the gastric mucosa. Scheduled endoscopic control could be cost-effective in IM patients, depending on the yearly incidence of gastric cancer in IM patients, the stage of gastric cancer at diagnosis discovered at surveillance, and the cost of endoscopy. As a pragmatic behavior, yearly endoscopic control would appear justified in all IM patients with at least one of these conditions: (1) IM extension > 20%; (2) the presence of incomplete type IM; (3) first-degree relative of gastric cancer patients; and (4) smokers. In the remaining IM patients, a less intensive (2-3 years) could be proposed.

Hepatic encephalopathy(HE) is the second most common major complication in cirrhotics and it significantly impacts quality of *** approaches for HE treatment and prevention mainly continue to rely on ammonia-lowering strategies and non-absorbable disaccharides are currently considered the cornerstone ***-absorbable antibiotics,such as neomycin and paramomycin,are effective in treatment of acute HE episodes but their prolonged use for recurrence prevention is hampered by possible *** overcome these limitations,rifaximin use has been *** has been shown to be not superior to non-absorbable disaccharides for either HE treatment or prevention,with a similar incidence of *** significantly increases rifaximin absorption and this could be a cause for *** long-term rifaximin therapy,Clostridium difficile colitis has been observed and Candida albicans has been isolated from 20% of *** addition,selection of resistant mutants of both Gram-negative and-positive bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract cannot be definitely ruled *** alterations(sodium and potassium) have been reported during rifaximin therapy,a warning for its long-term use in ***,a potential interference with vitamin K production should be considered which could further impair the already altered clotting status of these *** therapeutic cost of rifaximin is markedly higher than non-absorbable *** waiting for further safety data,caution should be used to limit the use of rifaximin therapy for a very short-term period in selected HE cirrhotics not responding to nonabsorbable disaccharides.

Fungal rhinosinusitis with atypical presentation-a report of two cases

Rhinosinusitis affects approximately 20%of the population,and the chronic rhinosinusitis represents over 90%of all cases of *** correct diagnosis is important for proper treatment and to predict its *** study presents two cases of atypical frontal sinus disease,which the follow-up revealed a diagnosis of fungal *** present study aims to describe the cases of two patients with atypical lesions on the left frontal sinus;the treatment options,surgical approach,results,diagnosis and follow-up are further discussed.A significant increase in the reported cases of fungal rhinosinusitis has been seen in the last two decades,justified by the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics and steroids,as well as the increased number of immunocompromised *** study reports the cases of two patients with a type of fungal rhinosinusitis named"fungal ball",characterized by a tangle of hyphae in the sinuses without tissue *** treatment included surgical removal of the fungal infectious process with aeration of the affected sinus,and the procedure was successfully performed in our patients.

Early prognostic assessment of obstetrical brachial plexopathies (OBP) would f acilitate rational selection of infants for brachial plexus surgery. We performe d bilateral motor nerve conduction studies (MNCS) of axillary, musculocutaneous, radial, median, and ulnar nerves in 33 babies (age 10 60 days) with OBP in ord er to compare the amplitude of compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs). All ba bies were followed up until 6 months of age and the outcome was classified according to muscle strength and arm function. A CMAP a mplitude reduction of more than 90%, compared to the unaffected side, predicted severe weakness of the corresponding root level (p < .0.01). Our results indica te that MNCS are a useful tool for very early prognostic assessment of OBP.
