Objective: Compare the efficacy of surrogate or gestational carrier (GC) cycles to that of autologous in vitro fertilization (IVf)/intracytoplasmic sperm injections (ICSI) in patients with gynecologic or medical co-morbidities contraindicative to pregnancy. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: Infertility patients from a single university hospital-based program from 1998-2009. Intervention(s): 128 GC cycles from 80 intended parents were identified and compared with 15,311 IVf or ICSI cycles. Main Outcome Measure(s): The peak estradiol (E2), number of oocytes retrieved, cycle cancellation, ongoing pregnancy, and live-birth were compared between GCs and autologous IVf carriers. Indications for GC use were also identified. Multiple cycles contributed by the same patient were accounted for using multivariable generalized estimating equations and two-sided Wald p-values. Results: Uterine factors (67%) was the most common indication for using a GC, followed by non-gynecologic medical conditions including coagulopathies (13%), end stage renal disease (10%), cardiovascular disease (5%) and cancer (5%). Adjusting for age, ovulation induction in GC cycles had similar peak E2 levels and number of oocytes retrieved relative to IVf cycles (p = 0.23 and 0.43, respectively). Clinical pregnancy (49% vs. 42%, p = 0.28) and live-birth rates (31% vs. 32%, p = 0.74) were also comparable. A sub-analysis of GC cycles in those women with uterine factor indications, demonstrated significantly higher clinical pregnancy rates (OR = 2.0;CI = 1.2 - 3.5) with 60% greater odds of live-birth relative to IVf/ICSI cycles, however this odds was not statistically significant for differences in live-birth (CI = 0.9 - 2.9). Conclusions: GCs are a viable alternative to start families for patients with medical co-morbidities precluding pregnancy.

Crude sesame oil (CSO) is the widely used unrefined edible oil. Storage instability, off-flavour, and discoloration are, however, challenges in the industry. The purpose of this study was to map the sesame value chain, assess the suitability of CSO extraction plant, and analyze the microbial quality of CSO and premises environment. A structured Questionnaire and checklist were used to assess the sesame value chain and evaluate the suitability of the CSO extraction plant. Microbiological quality assessment was conducted using standard analytical methods. Stakeholders in the sesame value chain were inclusive of farmers, market mediators, traders, regulatory, extension workers and researchers. Though, illiteracy, inadequate technology, and infrastructure were the drawbacks. The CSO extraction plant was suitable apart from inadequate ingredients and CSO handling and unhygienic practices. Total aerobic bacteria (4.34 - 5.06 log10 CfU/m2 on swap surfaces, 2.44 log10 CfU/g in CSO), total Coliforms (5.81 log10 CfU/g of animal manure and 1.36 log10 CfU of indoor air after extraction), yeasts and moulds (2.31 log10 CfU/g of sesame seed and CSO and 4.47 log10 CfU/m2 of swap sample), Aspergillus species (1.17 - 1.33 log10 CfU/g of sesame seed/CSO, 3.37 - 3.50 log10 CfU/m2 of swap samples), and Staphylococcus aureus (2.09 log10 CfU/g of CSO, 2.56 - 3.22 log10 CfU/m2 of surface swaps, 3.26 - 3.77 log10 CfU/protective clothing, 0.74 - 1.82 log10 CfU of the indoor and outdoor air) were detected. Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Shigella were not detected. In conclusion, potential microbial pathogens were detected to impose food safety problems and economic loss. BACKGROUND Over 400000 Americans annually undergo spinal fusion surgeries, yet up to 40%of these procedures result in pseudoarthrosis even with iliac crest autograft, the current "gold standard" treatment. Tissue engineering has the potential to solve this problem via the creation of bone grafts involving bone-promoting growth factors(e.g., bone morphogenetic protein 2). A broad assessment of experimental growth factors is important to inform future work and clinical potential in this area. As a follow-up to our previous study on the transesterification of Nigerian Jatropha curcas oil into Biodiesel using homogenous catalysis, kinetic study of the reaction is hereby presented. The kinetic study revealed that the rate of formation of biodiesel can be increased by increasing reaction temperature and oil to alcohol molar ratio. The optimum reaction condition was established to be 60°C (reaction temperature) and 1:6 (oil to alcohol ratio). Accordingly, the highest biodiesel yield obtained from homogeneously catalyzed transesterification of Nigerian Jatropha curcas (JC) oil into Biodiesel was 86.61% w/w at 60°C with oil to alcohol ratio of 1:6. furthermore, kinetic study also revealed that conversion of triglyceride to diglyceride was the rate determining step (RDS) of the overall reaction because activation energy of its backward reaction is lower than that of the forward reaction, indicating unstable nature and higher potential energy of the diglyceride in comparison to the triglyceride.

Anthropogenic pollutants have the potential to disrupt reproductive strategies. Little is known about how lead （Pb2＋） exposure disrupts individual-level responses in reproductive behaviors, which are important for fitness. Drosophila melanogaster was used as a model system to deter- mine the effects of： 1） developmental lead exposure on pre-mating reproductive behaviors （i.e., mate preference）, and 2） lead exposure and mating preferences on fitness in the f0 parental generation and f1 un-exposed offspring. Wild-type strains of D. melanogaster were reared from egg stage to adulthood in control or leaded medium （250 μM PbAc） and tested for differences in： mate preference, male song performance, sex pheromone expression, fecundity, mortality, and body weight. f0 leaded females preferentially mated with leaded males （i.e., asymmetrical positive assortative mating） in 2-choice tests. This positive assortative mating was mediated by the females （and not the males） and was dependent upon context and developmental exposure to Pb. Neither the courtship song nor the sex pheromone profile expressed by control and leaded males medi- ated the positive assortative mating in leaded females. Leaded females did not incur a fitness cost in terms of reduced fecundity, increased mortality, or decreased body weight by mating with leaded males. These results suggest that sublethal exposure to lead during development can alter mate preferences in adults, but not fitness measures once lead exposure has been removed. We suggest that changes in mate preference may induce fitness costs, as well as long-term population and multi-generational implications, if pollution is persistent in the environment.

Objective:To assess the haematological and lipid profile assays in ***: Eighty asthmatic subjects were prospectively studied in a major referral centre serving the Niger Delta region of Nigeria for 12 months(2006-2007).Clinico-haematological and serum lipid total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),and lipoproteins concentration were analyzed after adjusting for age,cigarette smoking,alcohol ingestion,hypertension and diabetes ***: Eighty patients(34 males and 46 females) were seen with female predominating in the various age groups(M∶f ratio,0.7∶1).Total cholesterol and low density lipoproteins-cholesterol for the asthmatics was significantly higher than the controls(Pf TC∶HDL-C(high density lipoprotein-cholesterol) in asthmatics was 3.67 compared to the control value of *** and low density lipoprotein-cholesterole(LDL-C) were significantly higher in females than the males(P2.3mmol/L) and a significant hypercholesterolemia(HC,>5.2mmol/L) according to the Adult Treatment Panel III definition in asthmatics thereby putting them at increased risk for the development of cardiovascular disease as well as other disorders related to excess *** was a significant thrombocytopenia(Pfor 24 h;that asthmatics of African descent showed a significantly increased total leucocyte count(P=0.001) similar to other studies in the Western ***: Hyperlipidaemia is a prevalent medical problem among asthmatics;hence screening for fasting serum lipid levels to identify those who need early intervention is recommended.
