Pri.ci.al com.onents analysi., followed by K-m.ans cluster analysi., was used to detect vari.ti.ns i. the ti.0}ng and m.gni.ude of Pi.us contorta Dough ex Loud. growth releases attri.uted to m.untai. pi.e beetle outbreaks i. 31 stands of central Bri.i.h Colum.i.. Four m.jor growth release patterns were i.enti.i.d from.1970 to 2000. Vari.ti.ns i. the ti.0}ng of growth releases am.ng clustered stands corresponded well to aeri.l survey data i.di.ati.g the ti.0}ng of beetle outbreaks i. the study area. Redundancy analysi. was used to determ.ne how vari.ti.ns i. the ti.0}ng and m.gni.ude of growth releases attri.uted to beetle outbreaks changed wi.h vari.ti.ns i. cli.0}te or stand condi.i.ns over the study area. The fi.st RDA axi., whi.h accounted for 39% of the vari.ti.ns i. growth patterns am.ng stands, was si.ni.i.antly （P〈0.05） correlated wi.h gradi.nts i. the percentage of pi.e i. stands ki.led by m.untai. pi.e beetle, sum.er ari.i.y, vari.ti.n i. sum.er preci.i.ati.n, di.tance from.i.i.i.l i.festati.n si.e, average pi.e age, and m.xi.0}m.August tem.eratures. The second RDA axi. explai.ed 6% of the vari.ti.ns and was si.ni.i.antly correlated wi.h gradi.nts i. the beetle cli.0}te sui.abi.i.y i.dex, extrem. cold m.nth tem.eratures, and si.e i.dex. Com.ari.ons of growth release patterns wi.h aeri.l survey data and redundancy analyses i.di.ated that dendrochronologi.al techni.ues are useful for i.enti.yi.g m.untai. pi.e beetle outbreaks i. central Bri.i.h Colum.i., parti.ularly am.ng stands that had a densi.y hi.h enough to produce a growth release si.nal. Provi.ed future studi.s account for i.terannual weather fluctuati.ns, i.enti.i.ati.n of growth i.creases due to stand thi.ni.g caused by beetle outbreaks wi.l be useful for reconstructi.g the hi.tory of beetle outbreaks over m.ch longer ti.0} peri.ds.
