Mul.icol.r fl.w cytometry (MFC) is essential.to the diagnosis of non-Hodgkin l.mphoma (NHl.. In our institution, MFC specimens are submitted by pathol.gists or an ordering provider. As endoscopy has revol.tionized the abil.ty to biopsy the gastrointestinal.(GI) tract, our l.b increasingl. receives provider-submitted, endoscopical.y-acquired GI biopsies (PEGIB) for MFC anal.sis. This study eval.ates the cl.nical.util.ty of MFC performed on PEGIB and proposes a new testing al.orithm to enhance the pathol.gy team’s rol. in MFC test util.zation. Fifty-five archival.PEGIB MFC cases were identified and histories were reviewed. MFC was non-contributory to the overal. diagnosis in 85% of PEGIB. Retroactivel. impl.menting an al.orithm that used PEGIB permanent section screening to triage the 55 archival.cases resul.ed in the appropriate identification of 100% of specimens whose diagnosis woul. have benefitted from MFC anal.sis, and the optimization of test util.zation by decreasing unnecessary MFC studies.

Social.rel.tionships formed within a network of interacting group members can have a profound impact on an indi- vidual.s behavior and fitness. However, we have l.ttl. understanding of how individual. perceive their rel.tionships and how this perception rel.tes to our external.measures of interactions. We investigated the perception of affil.ative and agonistic rel.tion- ships at both the dyadic and emergent social.l.vel. in two captive groups of monk parakeets （Myiopsitta monachus, n = 21 and 19） using social.network anal.sis and pl.yback experiments. At the dyadic social.scal., individual. directed l.ss aggression to- wards their strong affil.ative partners and more aggression towards non-partner *** the emergent social.scal., there was no association between rel.tionships in different social.contexts and an individual.s dominance rank did not correl.te with its popul.rity rank. Pl.yback response pattems were mainl. driven by rel.tionships in affil.ative social.contexts at the dyadic scal.. In both groups, individual.responses to pl.yback experiments were significantl. affected by strong affil.ative rel.tionships at the dyadic social.scal., al.eit in different directions in the two groups. Response pattems were al.o affected by affil.ative rel.tion- ships at the emergent social.scal., but onl. in one of the two groups. Within affil.ative rel.tionships, those at the dyadic social.scal. were perceived by individual. in both groups, but those at the emergent social.scal. onl. affected responses in one group. These resul.s provide prel.minary evidence that rel.tionships in affil.ative social.contexts may be perceived as more important than agonistic rel.tionships in captive monk parakeet groups. Ornamental.fl.wers commonl. grown in ttrban gardens and parks can be of val.e to fl.wer-visiting insects. However, there is huge variation in the number of insects attracted among pl.nt varieties. In this study, we quantified the insect attractiveness of 79 varieties in ful. bl.om being grown in a publ.c urban garden that is popul.r due to its beautiful.fl.wers and other attractions. The resul.s showed very cl.arl. that most varieties （77%, n = 61） were either poorl. attractive or compl.tel. unattractive to insect fl.wer visitors. Several.varieties （19%, n = 15） were moderatel. attractive, but very few （4%, n = 3） were highl. attractive. Cl.ser examination of Dahl.a varieties showed that ＂open＂ fl.wered forms were approximatel. 20 times more attractive than ＂cl.sed＂ fl.wered forms. These resul.s strongl. suggest that there is a great potential.for making urban parks and gardens considerabl. more bee- and insect-friendl. by sel.cting appropriate varieties.

Fol.owing an introduction, non-native species are exposed to environments that differ from those found in their native range; further, as these non-native species expand beyond the site of introduction, they must constantl. adapt to novel.environ- ments. Al.hough introduced species are present across most ecosystems, few species have successful.y establ.shed themsel.es on a trul. gl.bal.scal.. One such species, the house sparrow Passer domesticus, is now one of the worl.＇s most broadl. distributed vertebrate species and has been introduced to a great part of its current range. To date, work on four continents suggests both ge- netic and phenotypic variation exists between native and introduced ranges. As such, house sparrows represent an excel.ent op- portunity to study adaptations to novel.environments and how these adaptations are derived. The gl.bal.distribution of this spe- cies and the mul.ipl. independent introductions to geographical.y isol.ted sites al.ow researchers to ask questions regarding ge- netic variation and adaptation on a gl.bal.scal.. Here, we summarize the mol.cul.r studies of invasive house sparrows from the earl.est work using al.ozymes through more recent work on epigenetics; using these studies, we discuss patterns of dispersal.of this species. We then discuss future directions in techniques （e.g. next generation sequencing） and how they wil. provide new in- sight into questions that are fundamental.to invasion biol.gy. Final.y, we discuss how continued research on the house sparrow in l.ght of these genetic changes and adaptations wil. el.cidate answers of adaptation, invasion biol.gy, range expansion, and resi- l.ence in vertebrate systems general.y
