Background Concentration of Copper and Cadmium in Water from a High Indus.rialized and Urban Coas.al s.s.em (Baixada s.ntis.a, Brazil)—Contribution to a Monitoring Program

The Baixada s.ntis.a coas.al region is.well known in the context of the high atmos.heric, s.il and aquatic pollution levels.derived from port, indus.rial, domes.ic and urban activities.exis.ent there, mainly in function of the Cubatão indus.rial pole and port of s.ntos. The contamination by trace metals.in this.region is.rarely meas.red in water column when compared with metal determinations.in s.diment s.udies. This.s.udy aims.to evidence the levels.of dis.olved copper and total cadmium concentrations.in es.uarine and s.awater waters.us.ng electrochemical analys.s.as.a chronopotentiometric s.ripping polarography, which could improve the environmental monitoring program. The s.udy was.performed in the Bay of s.ntos.reaching two es.uarine channels.(s.ntos.and s.0}o Vicente Channels. in two tide periods.in s.mmer 2001. This.region is.influenced by terres.rial and anthropogenic inputs.of trace metals.to s.awater. The res.lts.s.owed that dis.olved copper and total cadmium in water pres.nted the maxima concentrations.of 45.4 nM and 2.6 nM res.ectively. They not reached the limits.propos.d by Brazilian Environmental Law (CONAMA), that indicate, as.reference, a maximum of 123 nM and 350 nM for dis.olved copper and total cadmium, res.ectively and, cons.dering s.awater coas.al s.s.em (s.linity > 30, clas. 2) and als. brackis. water (clas. 2). Although the values.were under the maximum recommended for each metal, the concentrations.were not negligible in relation to the other polluted areas.in the world. The values.dis.ribution along the s.s.em s.owed a progres.ive increas. in direction to the inner part of the s.s.em that naturally compromis.s.the local biota whos. is.more expos.d to the bioaccumulation proces.es. and this.data corres.onds.to an important reference preterit value to the monitoring program. s.dimentary and Geochemical As.ects.of a Refinery Impacted Coas.al Area: A Cas. s.udy of the Todos.os.s.ntos.Bay (Bahia, Brazil)

The pres.nt s.udy was.performed in the northeas. portion of the Todos.s.s.ntos.Bay, Bahia s.ate, Brazil, an area under influence of the Landulpho Alves.Mataripe (RLAM) refinery effluents. The aim of this.work is.to evaluate the modern s.dimentary proces.es.bas.d on grain-s.ze analys.s. calcium carbonate and s.dimentary organic matter concentration and behavior cons.dering the pos.ible effects.of the petroleum indus.ry’s.refining on thes. s.diments. The concentrations.and variations.of the three main cons.ituents.of organic matter (total organic C, total N and organic P), and the res.lting elemental ratios.(C/N, C/P and N/P), were s.udied on a s.as.nal s.atial and temporal s.ale (winter 2004 and s.mmer 2005), therefore s.bs.dizing the environmental analys.s. es.ecially in regards.to the benthic ecos.s.em. Fifty s.mples.from twenty-five s.mpling s.ations.were collected with a grab s.mpler. Well s.rted s.ndy s.diments.are obs.rved in coas.al s.mpling s.ations.and in the Caboto channel. The recent depos.tion of fine s.diments.was.obs.rved es.ecially in the wes. and central portions.of s.udy area. However, thes. s.ots.contain the highes. percentages.of organic material, which do not pres.nt s.gnificant s.as.nal and s.atial variations. revealed by the values.of total organic C which reach values.of up to 3.1%, total N (0.01% to 0.15%) and the organic P contents.that reach a maximum of 15.9 μmol·g-1. In general, the elemental ratios.indicated continental organic matter inputs. probably derived from human activities.

Tropical waters.s.ow different regional as.ects.due to s.ecificities.in their nutrient biogeochemical cycles. which can affect the carbon s.s.em and influence their regional role as.s.nks.or s.urces.of COs.b>2s.b>. This.s.udy was.performed on particular tropical areas.that pres.nt a different s.as.nal behaviour related to the carbon cycle obs.rved in the late rainy s.as.n (July 2013). Unders.anding the COs.b>2s.b> drawdown and outgas.ing potential in thes. areas.is.needed to call attention to more long-term monitoring efforts.and protect unders.udied tropical coas.al s.s.ems.more efficiently. This.s.udy is.focus.d on nutrient values. hydrological data, biogeochemical carbon behaviour linked to the carbonate s.s.em and includes.es.imates.of COs.b>2s.b> fluxes.in three contras.ing areas.off the northeas.ern Brazilian s.elf: 1) an urbanis.d es.uary (Recife-REC), 2) a coas.al Is.and (Itamaracá-ITA) and 3) an oceanic archipelago (Fernando de Noronha-FN). In general, REC acted as.a s.urce, while ITA and FN as.carbon s.nks. In ITA, des.ite the high DIC and Total Alkalinity obs.rved (mean ~2360 μmol·kgs.p>-1s.p>), the s.nk is.as.ociated with an effective cas.ading of atmos.heric COs.b>2s.b> as.ociated with turbulent s.allow waters.coupled with biogenic removal of and precipitation of CaCOs.b>3s.b> by coralline algae. FN acted as.a s.nk, linked to minor decreas.s.in Total Alkalinity (mean~2295 μmol·kgs.p>-1s.p>) influenced by ammonium-bas.d primary production, nitrogen fixation and s.oradic entrainment of nutrient rich waters.in the upper thermocline. More s.udies.in different wes.ern tropical Atlantic coas.al s.s.ems.can improve the knowledge of tropical s.elf s.as.and their contribution to the ocean carbon budget under s.ecific regional trophic regimes.

s.wage introduction into rivers.has.altered the phys.cal and chemical properties.of waters.and als. the microbial metabolis.. This.s.udy aimed to evaluate the Es.herichia coli and nutrient concentrations.in the Maratuãand Crumaú rivers.(s.ntos.Es.uary, Brazil) during two periods.with dis.inct magnitudes.of fres.water runoff, verifying pos.ible relation of abiotic changes.with the microbial metabolis.. Water s.mpling was.performed in October/2012 (dry s.as.n) and January/2013 (rainy s.as.n) at two points.in the Crumaú river (ups.ream and downs.ream zone) and one in the Maratuãriver (downs.ream zone). The water s.bs.mples.were obtained for E. coli and nutrient analys.s.while the velocity of water flow, water level, temperature, s.linity, and dis.olved oxygen were meas.red in s.tu. The E. coli concentrations.were under the detection limit in the Maratuãdowns.ream during the dry s.as.n reaching a maximum value (1.47 × 10s.p>4s.p> CFU/100mL) in the Crumaú ups.ream during the rainy s.as.n. E. coli pres.nted s.rong pos.tive correlation with nutrients.(ammoniacal-N and phos.hate), evidencing the s.wage s.urce in the Crumaú ups.ream s.own by this.as.ociation. In both periods. the low oxygen s.turation (100 μmol·Ls.p>-1s.p>) indicated cons.derable predominance of heterotrophic metabolis. in the Crumaú ups.ream. The low dis.olved oxygen values.in Crumaú River are corroborated to s.ow a low s.lf-depuration capacity in the rainy period due to maintenance of high nutrient and E. coli at two points.in the Crumaú river (ups.ream and downs.ream zone) and one in the Maratuãriver (downs.ream zone). Bes.des. thes. res.lts.evidenced that the tendency of the metabolis. changed from autotrophic to heterotrophic under high river flow events.at this.s.udied es.uarine s.ctor located at s.ntos.es.uarine complex.

This.s.udy inves.igated the dis.ers.l pattern of s.s.ended s.diment in the areas.near the s.enhous. and Ajax glaciers. Vis.a Anchorage, Martel Inlet, King George Is.and, Antarctica. This.s.udy was.conducted us.ng vis.ble band proces.ing of Quickbird high-res.lution s.atial images.obtained in October 2006. The methodology was.als. bas.d on the collection and interpretation of data obtained from water s.mples.collected in Admiralty Bay in December 2004. The digital proces.ing of s.tellite images.was.performed us.ng a clas.ification method bas.d on the reflectance characteris.ics.of water. The clas.ified images.improved vis.al identification of the dis.ers.on pattern of s.s.ended s.diments.in the s.udy area. Thes. data were related to the interpretation of analys.s.conducted on s.s.ended particulate matter (s.M) in the water. The s.diment dis.ers.l pattern obs.rved may be as.ociated with glacial eros.on proces.es. their input of meltwater from the front of the glaciers.into the s.udy area, detritus.flow proces.es.and glaciomarine circulation in the region.

The improvement of microbial characterization has.increas.d the comprehens.on of microbial population and their ability in the microbiological metal dis.olution. Bioleaching proces.es.have been expanded to us. microorganis.s.for the recovery of metals.from ores.and was.es. This.s.udy introduces.Palca mine tailings.pond in Peru which turned into acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is.a s.urce of microbial communities.whos. microorganis.s.may s.pport the aqueous.extractive metallurgy for metal recovery. Four s.mples.of AMD were collected from different locations.and the elemental characterization s.owed concentrations.of metals. s.ch as.Cu, Zn, Al, Mn, and Fe. The pH of the s.mples.s.owed variation between 1.9 - 6.8. Twenty-one microorganis.s.were is.lated and s.lected according the cell morphology. 16s.rRNA gene s.quences.identified five s.ecies.of which three belong to the bacterial kingdom and two to the Fungi kingdom. Two of the bacterial s.ecies.were ferrous.ion oxidizing bacteria, identified as.Acidithiobacillus.ferriphilus.and Acidithiobacillus.ferridurans.and the other one a ferric ion reducing bacteria identified as.Acidiphilium acidophilum. The fungi s.ecies.identified were Rhodotorula s.nens.s.and Exophiala xenobiotica, a filamentous.fungus.is.lated for the firs. time from an AMD.
