Anti-reflective (AR) single layer of silica-titania (siO2-TiO2) coatings were obtained from sols containing pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) derivatives and Ti and si precursors on glass substrate by dip-coating method. The coatings showed very high optical quality and the transmission was improved to up to 98.5%. Furthermore, the coatings also presented good mechanical stability.

With the objective to study the variation of optical properties of rat muscle during optical clearing,we have performed a set of optical measurements from that kind of *** performed were total tr ansmittance,ollimated transmit tance,specular reflec-tance and total *** set of measurements is suficient to determine diffuse reflectance and absorbance of the sample,also necessary to est imate the optical *** the per formed measurements and calculated quantities will be used later in inverse Monte carlo(IMc)simu-lations to determine the evolution of the optical properties of muscle during treatments with ethylene glycol and *** results obt ained with the measurements already provide some information about the optical c learing treatments applied to the muscle and translate the mechanisms of turning the tissue more transparent and sequence of regimes of optical clearing.

The applicatio n of nano particles as selective drug delivery platforms arises as one the most promising therapeutic strategies in the biomedical field. such systems can encapsulate drugs, prevent its premature degradation, transport and promote the drugs specific delivery to the target site. Among the different nanostructures, gold-core mesoporous silica shell (AuMss) nanorods have been one of the most explored due to their unique physical and chemical properties. The mesoporous silica biocompatibility, high surface area that can be easily functionalized, tubular pores that can store the drugs, conjugated with the intrinsic capacity of gold nanorod to absorb near-infrared radiation, allows the combination of hyperthermia (i.e., photothermal effect) with drug delivery, making them a nanoplatforms with a huge potential for cancer therapy. Nevertheless, the successful applicati on of AuMss nanoparticles as an effective can cer nano medicine is hindered by the uncon trolled release of the therapeutic payloads, limited blood circulation time and unfavorable pharmacokinetics. In this review, an overview of the modificati ons performed to improve the AuMss nano rods applicati on in nanom edicine is provided, highlighting the practical approaches that enhaneed the AuMss nanorods targeting, responsiveness to different stimuli, and blood circulation time. Further, the basics of AuMss nano rods syn thesis procedures, gen eral properties, and its applicati on in can cer therapy are also described.

The hydration status of a physically active individual or athlete can influence his/her physical or mental performance. The degree of hypohydration may lead to serious health problems, and consequently to impair athletic performance. The consumption of water or carbohydrate-electrolyte beverages before, during and after exercise is essential to maintain fluid balance and prevent dehydration. Besides these drinks, research findings have pointed using bovine milk as an alternative to sports drinks to optimize hydration levels in athletes and physically active individuals. The nutritional composition of cow’s milk promotes post-exercise rehydration process, due to the natural presence of water and electrolytes such as sodium and potassium. Although most studies have confirmed that bovine milk is a viable alternative for rehydration, recent studies have not reported significant differences between milk and some sports drinks for hydration process. Thus, milk consumption could be used as an alternative beverage for the hydration process.

Introduction: The malnutrition in children under 5 years is a serious public health problem in the developing countries such as Mozambique. The stunting can affect cognitive and physical development and compromise the school performance. Method: A cross sectional study was carried out which used the secondary data from a survey conducted by National health Institute of Mozambique, in districts of Angonia, Tsangano, Magoe and changara in Tete Province, Mozambique. The polynomial regression model and the hierarchical approach were used to examine the association between social economic factors and malnutrition in children measured by stunting (low height for age) and underweight (low weight for age). Results: The prevalence of moderate and severe stunting was 39.8%, and prevalence of moderate and severe underweight was 19.6%. In the basic level, the households that had 1 durable goods possession were associated to 1.46 times greater than the mild underweight, OR = 1.46 (c.I. 95% 1.02 - 2.11). In the intermediate level, lack of latrine increased 2.01 times greater than the moderate and severe underweight in children, OR = 2.01 (c.I. 95% 1.09 - 3.70);In the immediate level, the child deworming had 1.91 times greater than the moderate and severe stunting, OR = 1.91 (c.I.95% 1.04 - 3.52) and children who did not breastfeed had 2.42 times greater than the moderate and severe stunting, OR = 2.42 (c.I. 1.49 - 3.43). conclusion: In the countries where the weak health system and the inadequate children food are frequent, the prevalence of undernutrition in children remains very high.

Gross chemical Profile and calculation of Nitrogen-to-Protein conversion Factors for Five Tropical seaweeds

despite decades of research on marine algae, there are still significant gaps in basic knowledge about chemical composition of these organisms, especially in tropical environments. In this study, the amino acid composition and contents of total nitrogen, phosphorus, lipid, carbohydrate and protein were determined in Asparagopsis taxiformis, centroceras clavulatum, chaetomorpha aerea, sargassum filipendula and spyridia hypnoides. The seaweeds showed low lipid contents (lower than 5.5% d.w. in all species) and were rich in carbohydrates (more than 16% d.w. in all seaweeds). The percentage of nitrogen, phosphorus and protein varied widely among species, which red algae showed the highest con-centrations. The amino acid composition was similar among the seaweeds, which glutamic acid, aspartic acid and leu-cine as the most abundant. All species are poor in histidine. An average of 24.2% of the total nitrogen is non-proteinaceous. From data of total amino acid and total nitrogen, specific nitrogen-to-protein conversion factors were calculated for each species. The nitrogen-to-protein conversion factors calculated ranged from 4.51 to 5.21, with an overall average of 4.86. These findings show that the traditional conversion factor of 6.25 should be avoided for seaweeds, since it overestimates the actual protein content.

Temporal Variations of the chemical composition of Three seaweeds in Two Tropical coastal Environments

The seaweeds chaetomorpha antennina, Gymnogongrus griffithsiae and Ulva fasciata were studied regarding tissue concentrations of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total protein, hydrosoluble protein, total carbohydrate, chlorophyll a and total carotenoid throughout a 39-month survey in two coastal environments of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. One of the sites (Itapuca stone) has high concentrations of dissolved nutrients and an intense long-term process of cultural eutrophication;the second site (Bananal Inlet) is thought to have lower concentrations of dissolved nutrients and no relevant anthropic impact. seaweeds experienced changes in the concentrations of the substances in the thalli;however they did not show any cyclic seasonal pattern, except for pigments, with lower values in summer in both sites. The differences found for each species in each sampling at the sites were small (e.g. U. fasciata, more total nitrogen at Itapuca stone) or absent (e.g. c. antennina, no significant differences for hydrosoluble protein in the sites). Differences in the concentrations of dissolved nutrients in the sites did not generate contrasting chemical profiles in the seaweeds. There is no evidence of nitrogen- or phosphorus-limitation in any season. It is presumable that the concentrations of dissolved nutrients at the nutrient-poorer site are sufficient to generate high concentrations of the substances in the thalli of the species tested, similar to the concentrations measured in the eutrophic site. Experimental data are needed to elucidate the factors that promote the success of the species tested under contrasting nutrient availability and environmental disturbance.

The present study was performed in the northeast portion of the Todosos santos Bay, Bahia state, Brazil, an area under influence of the Landulpho Alves-Mataripe (RLAM) refinery effluents. The aim of this work is to evaluate the modern sedimentary processes based on grain-size analysis, calcium carbonate and sedimentary organic matter concentration and behavior considering the possible effects of the petroleum industry’s refining on these sediments. The concentrations and variations of the three main constituents of organic matter (total organic c, total N and organic P), and the resulting elemental ratios (c/N, c/P and N/P), were studied on a seasonal spatial and temporal scale (winter 2004 and summer 2005), therefore subsidizing the environmental analysis, especially in regards to the benthic ecosystem. Fifty samples from twenty-five sampling stations were collected with a grab sampler. Well sorted sandy sediments are observed in coastal sampling stations and in the caboto channel. The recent deposition of fine sediments was observed especially in the west and central portions of study area. however, these spots contain the highest percentages of organic material, which do not present significant seasonal and spatial variations, revealed by the values of total organic c which reach values of up to 3.1%, total N (0.01% to 0.15%) and the organic P contents that reach a maximum of 15.9 μmol·g-1. In general, the elemental ratios indicated continental organic matter inputs, probably derived from human activities.

The improvement of microbial characterization has increased the comprehension of microbial population and their ability in the microbiological metal dissolution. Bioleaching processes have been expanded to use microorganisms for the recovery of metals from ores and wastes. This study introduces Palca mine tailings pond in Peru which turned into acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is a source of microbial communities whose microorganisms may support the aqueous extractive metallurgy for metal recovery. Four samples of AMD were collected from different locations and the elemental characterization showed concentrations of metals, such as cu, Zn, Al, Mn, and Fe. The ph of the samples showed variation between 1.9 - 6.8. Twenty-one microorganisms were isolated and selected according the cell morphology. 16s rRNA gene sequences identified five species of which three belong to the bacterial kingdom and two to the Fungi kingdom. Two of the bacterial species were ferrous ion oxidizing bacteria, identified as Acidithiobacillus ferriphilus and Acidithiobacillus ferridurans;and the other one a ferric ion reducing bacteria identified as Acidiphilium acidophilum. The fungi species identified were Rhodotorula sinensis and Exophiala xenobiotica, a filamentous fungus isolated for the first time from an AMD.
