Contrasting responses of native and alien plant species to soil properties shed new light on the invasion of dune systems

Aims Among terrestrial ecosystems,coastal sandy dunes are particularly prone to alien plant *** studies related the invasion of dune habitats to anthropic causes,but less is known about the role of soil properties and plant traits in plant *** this study,we tested the relationships between soil features and alien plant invasion in dune systems,focusing on the interplay between soil nutrients,soil salinity and plant functional *** Study sites were sandy barrier islands of the Marano and Grado lagoon(northern Adriatic Sea).One hundred plots(4 m×4 m)were selected within 10 areas according to the main habitats occurring along the ecological gradient of dune system(foredune,backdune and saltmarsh).In each plot,we recorded all plant species occurrence and abundance and we collected a soil *** each soil sample,soil texture,conductivity(as proxy of soil salinity),organic carbon and nitrogen content were analyzed and related to the species number and cover of native and alien *** of main reproductive and vegetative functional traits among habitats was also analyzed for both alien and native *** Findings Soil properties were strongly related to overall plant diversity,by differently affecting alien and native species *** backdune,the most invaded habitat,a high soil conductivity limited the number of alien species,whereas the content of soil organic carbon increased along with alien plant abundance,suggesting also the occurrence of potential feedback processes between plant invasion and *** found a significant convergence between native and alien plant functional trait spectra only in backdune habitat,where environmental conditions ameliorate and plant competition *** findings suggest that in harsh conditions only native specialized plants can thrive while at intermediate conditions,soil properties gradient acts in synergy with plant traits to curb/facilitate alien plant richness.

Background:The assessment of Fontan circuit’sﬂow is traditionally evaluated by multiple through-plane phase-contrast MRI acquisitions(2Dﬂow),while recently,a single volumetric 4D-ﬂow MRI acquisition is emerging as a comprehensive tool for the hemodynamic evaluation in congenital heart ***:To compare 2D and 4D-ﬂow MRI measurements in patients after Fontan palliation and to evaluate parameters affecting potential ***:39 patients after Fontan palliation(23 males,age 22±11 years)who underwent cardiac MRI with 2D and 4D-ﬂow MRI acquisition were included in the *** all patients,bloodﬂow quantiﬁcation in the Fontan circuit and aorta by 2Dﬂow and by 4Dﬂow MRI acquisition blinding to the 2D results was *** agreement between 2D and 4D-ﬂow MRI was calculated as the intraclass correlation coefﬁcient(ICC).The mean absolute differences between 4D and 2Dﬂows were analyzed using linear regression ***:4D-ﬂow MRI acquisition time was slightly lower than 2D(7.6±1.8 min vs.9.4±3.3 min,p=0.03).Flow was slightly predominant in the right pulmonary artery(58%of total pulmonaryﬂow).Conduit/tunnel-pul-monary arteriesﬂow accounted for 60%of the Fontan *** between 2D and 4D was overall good-to-excellent from ICC:0.81795%CI:0.637–0.907 to 0.93295%CI:0.866–*** was no signiﬁcant inﬂu-ence of evaluated parameters on the agreement on 4D and 2Dﬂ***:4D-ﬂow MRI represents a valid tool in Fontan’sﬂow quantiﬁ*** larger studies are needed to conﬁrm our results and to evaluate the impact of advanced 4D-ﬂow MRI parameters on the prognostic stratiﬁcation in patients after Fontan palliation.

Grazing Management Plans improve pasture selection by cattle and forage quality in sub-alpine and alpine grasslands

Over the last decades, the reduction of manpower for herd management has led to an increase of continuous grazing systems(CGS) in the Italian Alps, which allow cattle to roam freely. Under CGS, due to high selectivity, livestock exploit grasslands unevenly, over-and under-using specific areas at the same time with negative effects on their conservation. To counteract these effects, a specific policy and management tool(i.e. Grazing Management Plan) has been implemented by Piedmont Region since 2010. The Grazing Management Plans are based on the implementation of rotational grazing systems(RGS), with animal stocking rate adjusted to balance it with grassland carrying capacity. A case study was conducted on alpine summer pastures to test the 5-year effects produced by the implementation of a Grazing Management Plan in grasslands formerly managed under several years of CGS on 1) the selection for different vegetation communities by cattle, 2) the abundance of oligo-, meso-, and eutrophic plant species(defined according to Landolt N indicator value), and 3) forage yield, quality, and palatability. A total of 193 vegetation surveys were carried out in 2011 and repeated in 2016. Cows were tracked yearly with Global Positioning System collars to assess their grazing selectivity, and forage Pastoral Value(PV) was computed to evaluate forage yield, quality, and palatability. Five years after RGS implementation, cow selectivity significantly decreased and the preference for the different vegetation communities was more balanced than under CGS. The abundance of meso-and eutrophic species increased, whereas oligotrophic ones decreased. Moreover, the abundance of moderately to highly palatable plant species increased, whereas non-palatable plant species decreased, with a consequent significant enhancement of the PV. This paper provides a literature review of current studies investigating the effects of meditation and mind-body exercise on peripheral concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF),an important mediator of the neuroplasticity of the central nervous system and cognitive function.A literature search was conducted to collect currently published randomized controlled,non-randomized controlled and uncontrolled intervention *** studies were identified;and among these studies,seven were randomized controlled studies,three were non-randomized studies,and five were uncontrolled *** limited evidence tends to support that mindfulness meditation and mind-body exercise(*** and tai chi)increase circulating BDNF concentrations in healthy and diseased *** is noteworthy that these findings are based on current studies with a relatively small sample size,or without a randomized controlled *** studies are needed to identify a definite effect of meditation or mind-body exercise on BDNF and its role in improving/maintaining brain functions in various populations.

Prefoldins Negatively Regulate Cold Acclimation in Arabidopsis thaliana by Promoting Nuclear Proteasome-Mediated HY5 Degradation

The process of cold acclimation is an important adaptive response whereby many plants from temperate regions increase their freezing tolerance after being exposed to low non-freezing temperatures. The correct development of this response relies on proper accumulation of a number of transcription factors that regulate expression patterns of cold-responsive genes. Multiple studies have revealed a variety of molecular mechanisms involved in promoting the accumulation of these transcription factors. Interestingly, however, the mechanisms implicated in controlling such accumulation to ensure their adequate levels remain largely unknown. In this work, we demonstrate that prefoldins （PFDs） control the levels of HY5, an Arabidopsis transcription factor with a key role in cold acclimation by activating anthocyanin biosynthesis, in response to low temperature. Our results show that, under cold conditions, PFDs accumulate into the nucleus through a DELLA-dependent mechanism, where they interact with HY5, triggering its ubiquitination and subsequent degradation. The degradation of HY5 would result, in turn, in anthocyanin biosynthesis attenuation, ensuring the accurate development of cold acclimation. These findings uncover an unanticipated nuclear function for PFDs in plant responses to abiotic stresses.

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis in the etiology of Crohn's disease, cause or epiphenomenon?

The origin of inflammatory bowel disease is unknown. Attempts have been made to isolate a microorganism that could explain the onset of inflammation, but no pathological agent has ever been identified. Johne’s disease is a granulomatous chronic enteritis of cattle and sheep caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) and shows some analogies with Crohn’s disease (CD). Several studies have tried to clarify if MAP has a role in the etiology of CD. The present article provides an overview of the evidence in favor and against the “MAP-hypothesis”, analyzing the methods commonly adopted to detect MAP and the role of antimycobacterial therapy in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Studies were identified through the electronic database, MEDLINE, and were selected based on their relevance to the objective of the review. The presence of MAP was investigated using multiple diagnostic methods for MAP detection and in different tissue samples from patients affected by CD or ulcerative colitis and in healthy controls. On the basis of their studies, several authors support a close relationship between MAP and CD. Although increasing evidence of MAP detection in CD patients is unquestionable, a clear etiological link still needs to be proven.

FunMod: A Cytoscape Plugin for Identifying Functional Modules in Undirected Protein–Protein Networks

The characterization of the interacting behaviors of complex biological systems is a primary objective in protein–protein network analysis and computational biology. In this paper we present FunMod, an innovative Cytoscape version 2.8 plugin that is able to mine undirected protein–protein networks and to infer sub-networks of interacting proteins intimately correlated with relevant biological pathways. This plugin may enable the discovery of new pathways involved in diseases. In order to describe the role of each protein within the relevant biological pathways, FunMod computes and scores three topological features of the identified sub-networks. By integrating the results from biological pathway clustering and topological network analysis, FunMod proved to be useful for the data interpretation and the generation of new hypotheses in two case studies.

Herein,we report for the first time the synthesis of preformed bimetallic Pd-Rh nanoparticles with different Pd:Rh ratios(nominal molar ratio:80-20,60-40,40-60,20-80) and the corresponding Pd and Rh monometallic ones by sol immobilization using polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) as protecting agent and NaBH4 as reducing agent,using carbon nanofibers with high graphitization degree(HHT) as the desired *** synthesized catalysts were characterized by means of Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy(ICP-OES).TEM shows that the average particle size of the Pd-Rh nanoparticles is the range of 3-4 nm,with the presence of few large agglomerated *** bimetallic catalysts,EDX-STEM analysis of individual nanoparticles demonstrated the presence of random-alloyed nanoparticles even in all cases Rh content is lower than the nominal one(calculated Pd:Rh molar ratio:90-10,69-31,49-51,40-60).The catalytic performance of the Pd-Rh catalysts was evaluated in the liquid phase dehydrogenation of formic acid to *** was found that Pd-Rh molar ratio strongly influences the catalytic ***-rich catalysts were more active than Rh-rich ones,with the highest activity observed for Pd90:Rh10(1792 h^(-1)),whereas Pd69:Rh31(921 h^(-1)) resulted the most stable during recycling ***,Pd90:Rh10 was chosen as a representative sample for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of muconic acid using formic acid as hydrogen donor,showing good yield to adipic acid.
