Sexual outcomes after partial penectomy for penile cancer： results from a multi-institutional study

Penile cancer is an uncommon malignancy. Surgical treatment is inevitably mutilating. Considering the strong impact on patients＇ sexual life we want to evaluate sexual function and satisfaction after partial penectomy. The patients in this study （n = 25） represented all those who attended our institutions and were diagnosed and treated for penile cancer from October 2011 to November 2013. All patients underwent partial penectomy and followed-up （mean： 14 months; range： 12-25）. Sexual presurgical baseline was estimated using the International Index of Erectile Dysfunction 15 （IIEF-15）. Sexual outcomes of each patient were estimated considering four standardized and validated questionnaires. We analyzed the means and ranges of IIEF-15 including erectile function （IIEF-1-5 and -15）, orgasmic function （IIEF-9 and -10）, sexual desire （IIEF-11 and -12）, intercourse satisfaction （IIEF-6-8）, and overall satisfaction （IIEF-13 and -14）. Then, we also used Quality of Erection Questionnaire （QEQ）, Erectile Dysfunction Inventory of Treatment Satisfaction （EDITS） and Self-Esteem and Relationship （SEAR） to evaluate the sexual function and satisfaction of our patients. The final results showed that penile cancer leads to several sexual and psychosexual dysfunctions. Nevertheless, patients who undergo partial penectomy for penile cancer can maintain the sexual outcomes at levels slightly lower to those that existed in the period before surgery.

Transcriptional regulation of MdmiR285N microRNA in apple(Malus x domestica)and the heterologous plant system Arabidopsis thaliana

Malus x domestica microRNA MdmiR285N is a potential key regulator of plant immunity,as it has been predicted to target 35 RNA transcripts coding for different disease resistance proteins involved in plant defense to pathogens.In this study,the promoter region of MdmiR285N was isolated from the apple genome and analyzed in silico to detect potential regulatory regions controlling its transcription.A complex network of putative regulatory elements involved in plant growth and development,and in response to different hormones and stress conditions,was identified.Activity of theβ-Glucoronidase(GUS)reporter gene driven by the promoter of MdmiR285N was examined in transgenic apple,demonstrating that MdmiR285N was expressed during the vegetative growth phase.Similarly,in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana,spatial and temporal patterns of GUS expression revealed that MdmiR285N was differentially regulated during seed germination,vegetative phase change,and reproductive development.To elucidate the role of MdmiR285N in plant immunity,MdmiR285N expression in wild-type apple plants and GUS activity in transgenic apple and Arabidopsis thaliana plants were monitored in response to Erwinia amylovora and Pseudomonas syringae pv.Tomato DC3000.A significant decrease of MdmiR285N levels and GUS expression was observed during host-pathogen infections.Overall,these data suggest that MdmiR285N is involved in the biotic stress response,plant growth,and reproductive development.

Prototyping low-cost automatic weather stations for natural disaster monitoring

Weather events put human lives at risk mostly when people might occupy areas susceptible to natural disasters.Deploying Professional Weather Stations(PWS)in vulnerable areas is key for monitoring weather with reliable measurements.However,such professional instrumentation is notably expensive while remote sensing from a number of stations is paramount.This imposes challenges on the large-scale weather station deployment for broad monitoring from large observation networks such as in Cemaden—The Brazilian National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters.In this context,in this paper,we propose a Low-Cost Automatic Weather Station(LCAWS)system developed from Commercial Off-The-Shelf(COTS)and open-source Internet of Things(IoT)technologies,which provides measurements as reliable as a reference PWS for natural disaster monitoring.When being automatic,LCAWS is a stand-alone photovoltaic system connected wirelessly to the Internet in order to provide real-time reliable end-to-end weather measurements.To achieve data reliability,we propose an intelligent sensor calibration method to correct measures.From a 30-day uninterrupted observation with sampling in minute resolution,we show that the calibrated LCAWS sensors have no statistically significant differences from the PWS measurements.As such,LCAWS has opened opportunities for reducing maintenance costs in Cemaden's observational network.

Nowadays alternative and innovative energy recovery solutions are adopted on board ships to reduce fuel consumption and harmful emissions.According to this,the present work compares the engine exhaust gas waste heat recovery and hybrid turbocharger technologies,which are used to improve the efficiency of a dual-fuel four-stroke(DF)marine engine.Both solutions aim to satisfy partly or entirely the ship’s electrical and/or thermal loads.For the engine exhaust gas waste heat recovery,two steam plant schemes are considered:the single steam pressure and the variable layout(single or dual steam pressure plant).In both cases,a heat recovery steam generator is used for the electric power energy generation through a steam turbine.The hybrid turbocharger is used to provide a part of the ship’s electric loads as well.The thermodynamic mathematical models of DF engines,integrated with the energy recovery systems,are developed in a Matlab-Simulink environment,allowing the comparison in terms of performance at different engine loads and fuels,which are Natural Gas(NG)and High Fuel Oil(HFO).The use of NG always involves better efficiency of the system for all the engine working conditions.It results that the highest efficiency value achievable is 56%at 50%maximum continuous rating(MCR)engine load.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide.The survival of cancer patients depends on the efficacy of therapies and the development of resistance.There are many mechanisms involved in the acquisition of drug resistance by cancer cells,including the acquisition of stem-like features.Cancer stem cells(CSCs)represent a major source of tumor progression and treatment resistance.CSCs are a subpopulation of cancer cells having the abilities to self-renew and form spheres in vitro.Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1(ALDH1A1)is a cytosolic enzyme involved in the detoxification of cells from toxic aldehydes and belongs to the ALDH family.High ALDH1A1 activity is closely related to stemness phenotype of several tumors,possibly contributing to cancer progression and diffusion in the body.We have documented the contribution of ALDH1A1 in tumor angiogenesis in breast cancer cells by the activation of hypoxia inducible factor-1αand vascular endothelial growth factor signaling.This review discusses the involvement of ALDH1A1 in the development of different hallmarks of cancer to propose it as a novel putative target for cancer treatment to achieve better outcome.Here,we analyze the involvement of ALDH1A1 in the acquisition of stemness phenotype in tumor cells,the regulation of tumor angiogenesis and metastases,and the acquisition of anticancer drug resistance and immune evasion.

Temporal decay of the catalytic oxidation of methane over palladium supported on silica

The temporal decay of the oxidation of methane(CH4-O2reaction)over palladium supported on silica is determined experimentally at different temperatures,comparing the results with those of various classical models which show the behavior of the adsorbed phase as the cause of the phenomenon.This effect is visualized through Monte Carlo simulations of the CH4-O2reaction on a mixed lattice whose partial poisoning,due to the configuration of the OH groups on the surface of the adsorbate,is translated into a gradual decay of the reaction’s activity.

Green Synthesis and Antibacterial Properties of Silver Nanoparticles from Eugenia uniflora Fruit Extract

The synthesis of nanoparticles by biological methods using microorganisms, enzymes, or plant extracts has been suggested as a possible ecofriendly alternative to chemical and physical methods that involve the use of harmful reducing agents. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was achieved using Eugenia uniflora ripe fruit extract, which was characterized by phytochemical screening revealing the presence of polyphenols (quinones, flavonoids, and tannins), reducing compounds, and terpenes. These excellent antioxidants reduced silver nitrate to give the AgNPs, which were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and ζ potential analysis. The diameter of the AgNPs ranged from 10.56 ± 1.2 nm to 107.56 ± 5.7 nm. The antibacterial activity of the AgNPs was evaluated using a modification of the Kirby-Bauer technique with Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. The inhibition halos were 11.12 ± 0.02 mm, 13.96 ± 0.07 mm, and 11.29 ± 0.76 mm, respectively. The synthesis using E. uniflora is an ecofriendly and low cost method of obtaining silver nanoparticles that could be used in health sciences because of their activity against bacteria with antibiotic resistance.

Genetic diversity and relatedness inferred from microsatellite loci as a tool for broodstock management of fine flounder Paralichthys adspersus

Paralichthys adspersus is a native species from the Pacific coast of South America that is of great economic importance for Peruvian aquaculture.Even though establishing sustainable farming depends on avoiding irreversible damage to the population gene pool due to processes such as inbreeding,studies focusing on genetically characterizing farmed stocks are yet to be documented.By using ten microsatellite loci on captive and wild individuals of P.adspersus,we successfully characterized the only commercial broodstock of this species in Peru by means of determining the genetic diversity and inferring relatedness.Although most microsatellite loci showed deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium,the genetic diversity levels in the commercial broodstock were considered healthy compared to those obtained for a wild population,with an average number of alleles of 17.40,an effective number of alleles of 9.14,and an observed and expected heterozygosity of 0.49 and 0.87.No significant differences between the broodstock and the wild population in terms of genetic diversity were observed.The fixation index and analysis of molecular variance also indicated a low rate of differentiation between both populations.In relatedness estimation,the analysis based on five method-of-moment estimators and a maximum-likelihood estimator showed the category“unrelated”as being the most probable relationship among the individuals within the commercial broodstock.Our findings reveal the conservation of genetic diversity in this population and outline potential breeding strategies that hatchery managers could use to minimize the loss of genetic diversity and long-term inbreeding.This could help establish proper genetic management in captive populations of P.adspersus and should apply to other captive stocks where pedigree information is lacking.
