Phytochrome Signaling in Green Arabidopsis Seedlings： Impact Assessment of a mutually Negative phyB-PIF Feedback Loop

The reversibly red （R）/far-red （FR）-Iight-responsive phytochrome （phy） photosensory system initiates both the deetiolation process in dark-germinated seedlings upon first exposure to light, and the shade-avoidance process in fully deetiolated seedlings upon exposure to vegetational shade. The intracellular signaling pathway from the light-activated photoreceptor conformer （Pfr） to the transcriptional network that drives these responses involves direct, physical inter- action of Pfr with a small subfamily of bHLH transcription factors, termed Phy-lnteracting Factors （PIFs）, which induces rapid PIF proteolytic degradation. In addition, there is evidence of further complexity in light-grown seedlings, whereby phyB-PIF interaction reciprocally induces phyB degradation, in a mutually-negative, feedback-loop configuration. Here, to assess the relative contributions of these antagonistic activities to the net phenotypic readout in light-grown seedlings, we have examined the magnitude of the light- and simulated-shade-induced responses of a pentuple phyBpiflpif3pif4pif5 （phyBpifq） mutant and various multiple pif-mutant combinations. The data （1） reaffirm that phyB is the predominant, if not exclusive, photoreceptor imposing the inhibition of hypocotyl elongation in deetiolating seedlings in response to pro- longed continuous R irradiation and （2） show that the PIF quartet （PIF1, PIF3, PIF4, and PIF5） retain and exert a dual capacity to modulate hypocotyl elongation under these conditions, by concomitantly promoting cell elongation through intrinsic transcriptional-regulatory activity, and reducing phyB-inhibitory capacity through feedback-loop-induced phyB degrada- tion. In shade-exposed seedlings, immunoblot analysis shows that the shade-imposed reduction in Pfr levels induces increases in the abundance of PIF3, and mutant analysis indicates that PIF3 acts, in conjunction with PIF4 and PIF5, to promote the known shade-induced acceleration of hypocotyl elongation. A small number of copepod species have adapted to an existence in the extreme habitat of hypersaline water.13 copepod species have been recorded in the hypersaline waters of Crimea(the largest peninsula in the Black Sea with over 50 hypersaline lakes).Summarizing our own and literature data,the author concludes that the Crimean extreme environment is not an exception:copepod species dwell in hypersaline waters *** are at least 26 copepod species around the world living at salinity above 100;among them 12 species are found at salinity higher than *** the Crimea Cletocamptus retrogressus is found at salinity 360×10-3(with a density of 1 320 individuals/m 3) and Arctodiaptomus salinus at salinity 300×10-3(with a density of 343 individuals/m 3).Those species are probably the most halotolerant copepod species in the *** halotolerance of osmoconforming copepods may be explained by exoosmolyte consumption,mainly with *** tolerance to many factors in adults,availability of resting stages,and an opportunity of long-distance transportation of resting stages by birds and/or winds are responsible for the wide geographic distribution of these halophilic copepods.

中国是世界上鸟类多样性最丰富的国家之一。根据201 5年环境保护部和中国科学院发布的《中国生物多样性红色名录》评估报告,在中国现有的1372种鸟类中,列为极危、濒危和易危等级的受威胁鸟类有146种,区域灭绝的3种。本论文首次系统地研究了中国鸟类的灭绝模式和受威胁过程。我们分析和探讨了以下4个科学问题。(1)受威胁物种在各个科中的分布是否是随机的?(2)如果不是,哪些科含有比随机分布更多的受威胁物种?(3)哪些物种特征与灭绝危险有关?(4)物种特征之间的作用方式是累加的(additive)还是协同作用的(synergistic)?研究发现受威胁物种在各个科中的分布不是随机的。犀鸟科(Bucerotidae)、鹤科(Gruida)、八色鸫科(Pittidae)、雉科(Phasianidae)和鹰科(Accipitridae)含有比随机分布更多的受威胁物种。通过查阅文献获得了11个与灭绝相关的物种特征:身体大小、窝卵数、营养级、扩散能力、生境专属性、地理分布范围、巢址、巢的类型、集群状态、迁徙状态和捕猎敏感度(hunting vulnerability)。在控制系统发育的影响后,发现身体大小和捕猎敏感度的协同作用是预测中国鸟类灭绝危险的最佳模型。本研究表明,为了有效保护中国鸟类,我们应优先保护那些含有比随机分布更多的受威胁物种的科以及那些体型大和捕猎敏感度高的物种。

Advanced mid-infrared plasmonic waveguides for on-chip integrated photonics

Long-wave infrared(LWIR, 8–14 μm) photonics is a rapidly growing research field within the mid-IR with applications in molecular spectroscopy and optical free-space communication. LWIR applications are often addressed using rather bulky tabletop-sized free-space optical systems, preventing advanced photonic applications,such as rapid-time-scale experiments. Here, device miniaturization into photonic integrated circuits(PICs) with maintained optical capabilities is key to revolutionize mid-IR photonics. Subwavelength mode confinement in plasmonic structures enabled such miniaturization approaches in the visible-to-near-IR spectral range. However,adopting plasmonics for the LWIR needs suitable low-loss and-dispersion materials with compatible integration strategies to existing mid-IR technology. In this paper, we further unlock the field of LWIR/mid-IR PICs by combining photolithographic patterning of organic polymers with dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton(DLSPP) waveguides. In particular, polyethylene shows favorable optical properties, including low refractive index and broad transparency between ~2 μm and 200 μm. We investigate the whole value chain, including design, fabrication, and characterization of polyethylene-based DLSPP waveguides and demonstrate their first-time plasmonic operation and mode guiding capabilities along S-bend structures. Low bending losses of ~1.3 d B and straight-section propagation lengths of ~1 mm, pave the way for unprecedented complex on-chip mid-IR photonic devices. moreover, DLSPPs allow full control of the mode parameters(propagation length and guiding capabilities) for precisely addressing advanced sensing and telecommunication applications with chip-scale devices.

Intrusion Detection Systems(IDSs)have a great interest these days to discover complex attack events and protect the critical infrastructures of the Internet of Things(IoT)*** IDSs based on shallow and deep network architectures demand high computational resources and high volumes of data to establish an adaptive detection engine that discovers new families of attacks from the edge of IoT ***,attackers exploit network gateways at the edge using new attacking scenarios(i.e.,zero-day attacks),such as ransomware and Distributed Denial of Service(DDoS)*** paper proposes new IDS based on Few-Shot Deep Learning,named CNN-IDS,which can automatically identify zero-day attacks from the edge of a network and protect its IoT *** proposed system comprises two-methodological stages:1)a filtered Information Gain method is to select the most useful features from network data,and 2)one-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network(CNN)algorithm is to recognize new attack types from a network’s *** proposed model is trained and validated using two datasets of the UNSW-NB15 and *** experimental results showed that it enhances about a 3%detection rate and around a 3%–4%falsepositive rate with the UNSW-NB15 dataset and about an 8%detection rate using the BoT-IoT dataset.

Biopolymers play a critical role as scaffolds used in tendon and ligament(TL)*** advanced biopolymer materials have been proposed with optimised mechanical properties,biocompatibility,degradation,and processability,it is still challenging to find the right balance between these ***,we aim to develop novel hybrid biocomposites based on poly(p-dioxanone)(PDO),poly(lactide-co-caprolactone)(LCL)and silk to produce high-performance grafts suitable for TL tissue *** containing 1-15%of silk were studied through a range of characterisation *** then explored biocompatibility through in vitro and in vivo studies using a mouse *** found that adding up to 5%silk increases the tensile properties,degradation rate and miscibility between PDO and LCL phases without agglomeration of silk inside the ***,addition of silk increases surface roughness and *** vitro experiments show that the silk improved attachment of tendon-derived stem cells and proliferation over 72 h,while in vivo studies indicate that the silk can reduce the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines after six weeks of ***,we selected a promising biocomposite and created a prototype TL graft based on extruded *** found that the tensile properties of both individual fibres and braided grafts could be suitable for anterior cruciate ligament(ACL)repair applications.

Cellular automata model for traffic flow with safe driving conditions

In this paper, a recently introduced cellular automata （CA） model is used for a statistical analysis of the inner micro-scopic structure of synchronized traffic flow. The analysis focuses on the formation and dissolution of clusters or platoons of vehicles, as the mechanism that causes the presence of this synchronized traffic state with a high flow. This platoon formation is one of the most interesting phenomena observed in traffic flows and plays an important role both in manual and automated highway systems （AHS）. Simulation results, obtained from a single-lane system under periodic boundary conditions indicate that in the density region where the synchronized state is observed, most vehicles travel together in pla- toons with approximately the same speed and small spatial distances. The examination of velocity variations and individual vehicle gaps shows that the flow corresponding to the synchronized state is stable, safe and highly correlated. moreover, results indicate that the observed platoon formation in real traffic is reproduced in simulations by the relation between vehicle headway and velocity that is embedded in the dynamics definition of the CA model.
