Is hamstrings-to-quadriceps torque ratio useful for predicting anterior cruciate ligament and hamstring injuries?A systematic and critical review

Background:For the past 30 years,the hamstring(H)-to-quadriceps(Q)(H:Q)torque ratio has been considered an important index of muscle strength imbalance around the knee *** purpose of this systematic review was to examine the value of H:Q torque ratio as an independent risk factor for hamstring and anterior cruciate ligament(ACL)***:Database searches were performed to identify all relevant articles in PubMed,MEDLINE,Cochrane Library,and *** studies evaluating the conventional(concentric H:Q),functional(eccentric H:concentric Q),and mixed(eccentric H at 300/s:concentric Q at2400/s)H:Q ratios as risk factors for occurrence of hamstring muscle strain or ACL injury were *** of bias was assessed using the Quality In Prognosis Studies ***:Eighteen included studies reported 585 hamstrings injuries in 2945 participants,and 5 studies documented 128 ACL injuries in *** evidence synthesis analysis indicated that there is very limited evidence that H:Q strength ratio is an independent risk factor for hamstring and ACL injury,and this was not different between various ratio *** limitations and limited evidence for ACL injuries and some ratio types might have influenced these ***:The H:Q ratio has limited value for the prediction of ACL and hamstring *** strength imbalances along with other modifiable factors during the entire competitive season may provide a better understanding of the association between H:Q ratio and injury.

Neuromuscular interactions around the knee in children, adults and elderly

Although injury and neuromuscular activation patterns may be common for all individuals, there are certain factors which differentiate neuromuscular activity responses between children, adults and elderly. The purpose of this study is to review recent evidence on age differences in neural activation and muscle balances around the knee when performing single joint movements. Particularly, current evidence indicates that there are some interesting similarities in the neuromuscular mechanisms by which children or the elderly differ compared with adults. Both children and elderly display a lower absolute muscle strength capacity than adults which cannot fully be explained by differences in muscle mass. Quadriceps activation failure is a common symptom ofall knee injuries, irrespective of age but it is likely that its effect is more evident in children or adults. While one might expect that antagonist co-activation would differ between age categories, it appears that this is not the case. Although hamstring: quadriceps ratio levels are altered after knee injury, it is not clear whether this is an age specific response. Finally, evidence suggests that both children and the elderly display less stiffness of the quadriceps muscle-tendon unit than adults which affects their knee joint function.

Immune signature of small bowel adenocarcinoma and the role of tumor microenvironment

One of the most important solutions to overcome energy and environmental problems and to replace the fossil fuel-based economy could be the use of photosynthetic *** use of photosynthetic microorganisms is a potential alternative to energy generation from fossil fuels because they efficiently produce hydrogen(H_(2)).Immobilization of photosynthetic microorganisms is used for many biotechnological applications such as H_(2) *** method appears attractive because it restricts cell movement in an entrapped *** of Rhodopseudomonas sp.S16-VOGS3 cells is a promising way to improve H_(2) *** this work,the ability of immobilized Rhodopseudomonas sp.S16-VOGS3 cells to produce H_(2) was investigated in two types of *** PBRs used in this work were a cylindrical one with 0.2 L working volume(C-PBR)and a flat Roux type with 0.6 L working volume(FRT-PBR).The calcium alginate beads prepared were resistant to culture mixing and showed little leakage of cells,and the immobilized cells continued the photofermentation process in both *** immobilized cells in the C-PBR produced 936.8 mL of H_(2) with an average H_(2) production rate of 2.99 mL/*** average productivity was 126.4μL(H_(2))/mg(cells)/h or 14.96 mL(H_(2))/L(culture)/h,and the light conversion efficiency was 2.37%.The immobilized cells in the FRT-PBR produced a total of 662.2 mL of H_(2) with an average H_(2) production rate of 1.55 mL/*** average productivity was 31.1μL(H_(2))/mg(cells)/h or 2.58 mL(H_(2))/L(culture)/h,and the light conversion efficiency was 0.52%.The more uniform and therefore more efficient degree of bacterial cell mixing achieved in the C-PBR with cylindrical configuration played an important role compared to the *** the FRT-PBR,the beads were aggregated at the bottom,which limited light penetration and resulted in low H_(2) production efficiency.
