Several decades of conventi.nal oi. and gas producti.n i. Western Canada Sedi.entary Basi. (WCSB) have resulted i. maturi.y of the basi., and attenti.n i. shi.ti.g to alternati.e hydrocarbon reservoi. system, such as ti.ht gas reservoi. of the Montney Formati.n, whi.h consi.ts of si.tstone wi.h subordi.ate i.terlami.ated very fi.e-grai.ed sandstone. The Montney Formati.n resource play i. one of Canada’s pri.e unconventi.nal hydrocarbon reservoi., wi.h reserve esti.ate i. Bri.i.h Columbi. (Natural Gas reserve = 271 TCF), Li.uefi.d Natural Gas (LNG = 12,647 mi.li.n barrels), and oi. reserve (29 mi.li.n barrels). Based on sedi.entologi.al and i.hnologi.al cri.eri., fi.e li.hofaci.s associ.ti.ns were i.enti.i.d i. the study i.terval: Li.hofaci.s F-1 (organi. ri.h, wavy to parallel lami.ated, black colored si.tstone);Li.hofaci.s F-2 (very fi.e-grai.ed sandstone i.terbedded wi.h si.tstone);Li.hofaci.s F-3A (bi.turbated si.ty-sandstone attri.uted to the Skoli.hos i.hnofaci.s);Li.hofaci.s F-3B (bi.turbated si.tstone attri.uted to Cruzi.na i.hnofaci.s);Li.hofaci.s F-4 (dolomi.i., very fi.e-grai.ed sandstone);and Li.hofaci.s F-5 (massi.e si.tstone). The deposi.i.nal envi.onments i.terpreted for the Montney Formati.n i. the study area are lower shoreface through proxi.al offshore to di.tal offshore setti.gs. Rock-Eval data (hydrogen i.dex and Oxygen i.dex) shows that Montney sedi.ents contai.s mostly gas prone Type i.i.i. wi.h subordi.ate Type i. kerogen, TOC ranges from 0.39 - 3.54 wt% wi.h a rare spi.e of 10.9 wt% TOC along the Montney/Doi. boundary. Vi.ri.i.e reflectance data and Tmax show that thermal maturi.y of the Montney Formati.n i. i. the realm of “peak gas” generati.n wi.dow. Despi.e the economi. si.ni.i.ance of the Montney unconventi.nal “resource-play”, however, the locati.n and predi.tabi.i.y of the best reservoi. i.terval remai. conjectural i. part because the li.hologi. vari.bi.i.y of the opti.um reservoi. li.hologi.s has not been adequately characteri.ed. i.ducti.ely Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (i.P-MS) was used to analyze chemical elements—major, trace and rare earth elements (REE) concentrations, augmented with quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and thin-section petrography for mineralogical characterization of the Triassic Montney Formation in northeastern British Columbia, Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). Results from this study indicate that integration of chemical elements with mineralogy shows affinity to the host lithologies. Evidently, chemical elements are the building blocks for minerals, thus, their significances i.e:12px;font-fami.y:Verdana;">i. the i.terpretati.n of geologi.al systems are unambi.uous. Oxygen i.otope (δ18O) serves as paleothermometer, and provi.es paleotemperature for carbonates. δ18O si.nature was used to esti.ate the temperature of fracti.nati.n of dolomi.e and calci.e i. Montney Formati.n, empi.i.ally calculated to have preci.i.ated, between approxi.ately 13°C to ±33°C duri.g Tri.ssi. ti.e i. northeastern Bri.i.h Columbi., Western Canada Sedi.entary Basi. (WCSB). Measurements of stable i.otopes (δ13C and δ18O) fracti.nati.n, supported by quanti.ati.e X-ray di.fracti.n evi.ence, and whole-rock geochemi.al characteri.ati.n of the Tri.ssi. Montney Formati.n i.di.ates the presence of calci.e, dolomi.e, magnesi.m, carbon and other elements. Results from i.otopi. si.nature obtai.ed from bulk calci.e and bulk dolomi.e from thi. study i.di.ates depleted δ13CPDB (-2.18‰ to -8.46‰) and depleted δ18OPDB (-3.54‰ to -16.15‰), whi.h i. i.terpreted i. relati.n to oxi.ati.n of organi. matter duri.g di.genesi.. Di.geneti. modi.i.ati.n of dolomi.i.ed very fi.e-grai.ed, si.ty-sandstone of the Montney Formati.n may have occurred i. stages of progressi.e oxi.ati.n and reducti.n reacti.ns i.volvi.g chemi.al elements such as Fe, whi.h mani.est i. mi.eral form as pyri.e, parti.ularly, duri.g early buri.l di.genesi.. Source-rock characteri.ti.s of Lower Tri.ssi. Montney Formati.n presented i. thi. study shows the total organi. carbon (TOC) ri.hness, thermal maturi.y, hydrocarbon generati.n, geographi.al di.tri.uti.n of TOC and thermal maturi.y (Tmax) i. Fort St. John study area (T86N, R23W and T74N, R13W) and i.s envi.ons i. northeastern Bri.i.h Columbi., Western Canada Sedi.entary Basi. (WCSB). TOC ri.hness i. Montney Formati.n wi.hi. the study area i. grouped i.to three categori.s: low TOC ( 3.5 wt%), and hi.h TOC (>3.5 wt% %). Thermal maturi.y of the Montney Formati.n source-rock i.di.ates that >90% of the analyzed samples are thermally mature, and mai.ly wi.hi. gas generati.g wi.dow (wet gas, condensate gas, and dry gas), and compri.es mi.ed Type i./i.i.(oi./gas prone kerogen), and Type i. kerogen (gas prone). Analyses of Rock-Eval parameters (TOC, S2, Tmax, Hi. Oi.and Pi. obtai.ed from 81 samples i. 11 wells that penetrated the Montney Formati.n i. the subsurface of northeastern Bri.i.h Columbi. were used to map source rock quali.y across the study area. Based on total organi. carbon (TOC) content mappi.g, geographi.al di.tri.uti.n of thermal maturi.y (Tmax) data mappi.g, i.cludi.g evaluati.n and i.terpretati.n of Rock-Eval parameters i. the study area, the Montney Formati.n kerogen i. i.di.ati.e of a pervasi.ely matured petroleum system i. the study area.
