Hydrogen technologies and fuel cells offer an alternative and improved solution for a decarbonised energy *** cells are electrochemical converters;transforming hydrogen (or energy sources containing hydrogen) and oxygen directly into *** hydrogen fuel cell,invented in 1839,permits the generation of electrical energy with high efficiency through a non-combustion,electrochemical process and,importantly,without the emission ofits point of ***,despite numerous efforts to exploit the obvious attractions of hydrogen technologies and hydrogen fuel cells,various challenges have been encountered,some of which are reviewed ***,however,given the exigent need to urgently seek low-carbon paths for humankind’s energy future,numerous countries are advancing the deployment of hydrogen technologies and hydrogen fuel cells not only for transport,but also as a means of the storage of excess renewable energy from,for example,wind and solar ***,hydrogen is also being blended into the natural gas supplies used in domestic heating and targeted in the decarbonisation of critical,large-scale industrial processes such as steel *** briefly review specific examples in countries such as Japan,South Korea and the People’s Republic of China,as well as selected examples from Europe and north America in the utilization of hydrogen technologies and hydrogen fuel cells.

Golf is an international sport played by a variety of age groups and fitness levels,and although golf has a low to moderate aerobic intensity level,injuries are common among professional and amateur *** amounts of force experienced during the golf swing can lead to injury when golfers lack appropriate strength or technique with the lower back most commonly *** has indicated that trunk muscle activation,hip strength and mobility,and pelvis and trunk rotation are associated with low back pain(LBP).Based on anecdotal evidence,golf practitioners specifically address issues in weight shift,lumbar positioning,and pelvis sequencing for golfers with *** review aims to elucidate the effects of proper and improper golf swing technique on LBP and to help golf practitioners understand how to approach the alleviation of LBP in their clientele.

A bibliometric review on the implications of renewable offshore marine energy development on marine species

The growing global demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly energy has stimulated the rapid adoption of renewable offshore ***,infrastructure needed for green energy production ironically impacts upon marine species and ***,this positional review paper seeks to comprehensively synthesise the prevailing body of knowledge on the impact of offshore energy development on a broad range of marine *** interpretivist philosophical stance and inductive reasoning was adopted using scientometric analysis to conduct a rich synthesis of extant *** an operational perspective,the Scopus database was utilised to search for key terms on the phenomena under investigation and using the VoS Viewer software for the identification of trends using scientometric *** analysis reveals that research in this area of science has increased significantly over the last decade but private sector involvement is conspicuous by its *** concerns among the research community include the impact of energy development on the abundance of species,pollution and biodiversity behaviour and *** present,researchers have extensively focused on the impact of offshore wind farms on fish and marine ***,the literature reveals no significant long-term impact upon energy development on most marine species albeit,short-term interference has raised concerns(from sound,disruption of navigation and foraging patterns,and damage of habitat).To minimise short term disruption,researchers have recommended the use of acoustic deterrence during construction,enforcement of protected areas and continued research.

On the dynamics of a class of perturbed cyclic Lotka-Volterra systems

We consider a special class of Lotka-Volterra systems where the associated interaction matrix is cyclic, but asymmetric, with a perturbation term on each row. After some discussion of the dynamics under a general setting, we focus our attention on 3D systems for a more detailed study. We derive sufficient conditions for the existence and stability of the nontrivial interior equilibrium. We also show that Hopf bifurcation occurs when the size of the perturbation is large. Such analysis can be similarly extended to higher dimensional systems, and we mention some results in 4D case.

Photosynthesis, enzyme activities and metabolite pools associated with primary carbon metabolism in leaves were studied in O. grandiglumis and O. alta （wild relatives of rice which produce high biomass） versus O. sativa （a japonica cultivar and a indica-japonica hybrid） to assess their potential for identifying traits which might be utilized to enhance rice productivity. The wild relatives had higher rates of photosynthesis on a fresh weight basis, and higher water use efficiency than the O. sativa lines. There were no striking differences in activities of a number of key enzymes in carbon and nitrogen metabolism between the wild relatives and cultivated rice lines. Along with higher rates of photosynthesis on a fresh weight basis, the leaves of the two wild species had higher nitrate content, higher levels of starch, glucose and fructose, and higher levels of organic acids （malate, succinate and acetate）, compared to the O. sativa lines. The results suggested that O. grandiglumis and O. alta have differences in physiology and primary metabolism which might be exploited to improve growth and productivity of cultivated rice.

Variation in the plant-mediated methane transport and its importance for methane emission from intact wetland peat mesocosms

Aims and Methods Vascular plants are known to influence the production,transport and oxidation of methane in wetland soils,but these processes are not well *** plants grown in intact peat cores,we compared the influence upon methane emissions of 20 forb and graminoid species from European *** measured plant-mediated transport of methane(conduit or chimney effect)using a novel agar-sealing technique that prevented methane exchange from the bare soil to the *** Findings the plant-mediated transport(chimney effect)represented between 30%and almost 100%of the total methane flux,with graminoids exhibiting greater internal transport than *** general,plants with less dense root tissues and a relatively larger root volume exhibited a larger chimney *** species(12 out of 20)signif-icantly reduced methane emissions compared to bare soil and only one species,Succisa pratensis,increased *** suggest that characterising vegetation in terms of plant functional traits and plant processes offers an effective method for estimating methane emis-sions from ***,we found no correlation between the magnitude of the chimney effect and the overall influence of different plant species on methane *** introducing a useful tool to study plant-mediated transport,this work suggests that characterising vegetation in terms of functional traits could improve estimates of methane emissions from wetlands,which in turn could help in designing mitigation strategies.

An article by Zhang et al. questions the interpretation of our oxygen isotope record from Wanxiang Cave and the sediment titanium record from Lake Huguang Maar,and the possible linkage between climate change and Chinese culture. In response,we explain that their approach lacks logical rigor and their major argument is broadly consistent with,rather than contradictory to our original conclusions. We also note that climate-culture relationships similar to those that we observe in China have been observed for other cultures around the world.

Response of native and exotic longhorn beetles to common pheromone components provides partial support for the pheromone-free space hypothesis

Longhorn beetles are among the most important groups of invasive forest in-sects *** parallel,they represent one of the most well-studied insect groups interms of chemical *** beetle aggregation-sex pheromones are commonlyused as trap lures for specific and generic surveillance programs at points of entry andmay play a key role in determining the success or failure of exotic species *** exotic species might be more likely to establish in a novel habitat if it relies on apheromone channel that is different to that of native species active at the same time of yearand day,allowing for unhindered mate location(i.e.,pheromone-free space hypothesis).Inthis study,we first tested the attractiveness of single pheromone components(i.e.,racemic3-hydroxyhexan-2-one,racemic 3-hydroxyoctan-2-one,and syn-2,3-hexanediol),and theirbinary and tertiary combinations,to native and exotic longhorn beetle species in Canadaand ***,we exploited trap catches to determine their seasonal flight ***,we used pheromone-baited"timer traps"to determine longhorn beetle daily *** response to single pheromones and their combinations was mostly speciesspecific but the combination of more than one pheromone component allowed catch ofmultiple species simultancously in *** response of the exotic species to pheromonecomponents,coupled with results on seasonal and daily flight activity,provided partialsupport for the pheromone-free space *** study aids in the understanding oflonghorn beetle chemical ecology and confirms that pheromones can play a key role inlonghorn beetle invasions.
