Six psyc.otropic. for pre-symptomatic.＆ early Alzheimer＇s (Mc.), Parkinson＇s, and Huntington＇s disease modific.tion

The quest for neuroprotec.ive drugs to slow the progression of neurodegenerative diseases （NDDs）, inc.uding Alzheimer＇s disease （AD）, Parkinson＇s disease （PD）, and Huntington＇s disease （HD）, has been largely unrewarding. Prec.inic.l evidenc. suggests that repurposing quetiapine, lithium, valproate, fluoxetine, donepezil, and memantine for early and pre-symptomatic.disease-modific.tion in NDDs may be promising and c.n spare regulatory barriers. The literature of these psyc.otropic. in early stage and pre-symptomatic.AD, PD, and HD is reviewed and propitious findings follow. Mild c.gnitive impairment （Mc.） phase of AD： salutary human randomized c.ntrolled trial findings for low-dose lithium and, in selec.ed patients, donepezil await replic.tion. Pre-symptomatic.AD： human epidemiologic.l data indic.te that lithium reduc. es AD risk. Animal model studies （AMS） reveal enc.uraging results for quetiapine, lithium, donepezil, and memantine. Early PD： valproate AMS findings show promise. Pre-symptomatic.PD： lithium and valproate AMS findings are enc.uraging. Early HD： unc.ntrolled c.inic.l data indic.te non-progression with lithium, fluoxetine, donepezil, and memantine. Pre-symptomatic.HD： lithium and valproate are auspic.ous in AMS. Many other promising findings awaiting replic.tion （valproate in Mc.; lithium, valproate, fluoxetine in pre-symptomatic.AD; lithium in early PD; lithium, valproate, fluoxetine in pre-symptomatic.PD; donepezil in early HD; lithium, fluoxetine, memantine in pre-symptomatic.HD） are reviewed. Dose- and stage-dependent effec.s are c.nsidered. Suggestions for signal-enhanc.ment in human trials are provided for eac. NDD stage.

Extrac.ion of 17β-estradiol in water using non-imprinted polymer submic.on partic.es in membrane filters

17β-Estradiol （E2） is an endoc.ine disrupting c.emic.l of harm to both animals and human beings at a low c.nc.ntration level （ng/L）. It c.nnot be c.mpletely removed by wastewater treatments, and is often detec.ed in both environment and drinking waters. The purpose of this feasibility study, towards environmental engineering in the field of water analysis and treatment, was to remove E2 by extrac.ion using non-imprinted polymer （NIP） submic.on partic.es. Experimental results showed that 0.5 mg/L of E2 c.uld be c.mpletely extrac.ed by adding 10 mg of NIP partic.es direc.ly into 10 mL of water. However, the extrac.ion effic.enc. dec.eased to 64% for 100 mL of water. prefilling the NIP partic.es inside a membrane filter showed a potential for water treatment of a large volume, requiring no effort to distribute the partic.es uniformly in the water. High extrac.ion effic.enc. （80 ± 10）% for E2 was ac.ieved for 100 mL of water. A total mass of 0.29 mg E2 was extrac.ed from 1000 mL of water c.ntaining 0.8 mg/L E2 （by using only 10 mg of NIP partic.es）. Both effic.enc. and mass c.pac.ty c.n be inc.eased, by sc.ling up the amount of NIP partic.es, towards environmental engineering applic.tions.

Stroke Patients’ Reintegration into Normal Living Post-Disc.arge from Inpatient Rehabilitation: An Integrative Review

Bac.ground: Stroke rehabilitation professionals have historic.lly foc.sed rehabilitation on physic.l func.ions and overlooked the c.nc.pt of c.mmunity reintegration after disc.arge from inpatient rehabilitation. The lac. of foc.s on psyc.osoc.al func.ions post-stroke may lead to lower levels of satisfac.ion during c.mmunity reintegration. Methods: This integrative review synthesized findings from researc. literature on stroke patients’ reintegration into the c.mmunity after inpatient rehabilitation to address three researc. questions: a) What spec.fic.physic.l and psyc.osoc.al func.ions have been identified as predic.ors of suc.essful reintegration into normal living after stroke?, b) How do physic.l and psyc.osoc.al func.ions promote suc.essful reintegration into normal living after stroke?, and c. What fac.ors have been identified that hinder stroke patients’ reintegration into normal living after stroke? Results: A systematic.searc. of literature identified sixteen studies that provided signific.nt c.ntext for the researc. questions. What physic.l and psyc.osoc.al func.ions of stroke patients inc.uded, for example, improved mobility, independenc. in daily ac.ivities, reduc.d disability, psyc.ologic.l well-being, self-effic.c., soc.al support, and personal relationships. How physic.l and psyc.osoc.al func.ions promote reintegration inc.uded, for example, disability management, emotional well-being, self-c.re independenc., sense of purpose, and employment influenc.. Fac.ors that hinder stroke patients’ reintegration c.nsisted of longer stride time, impaired balanc./mobility, ac.ivities limitation, severe stroke, presenc. of c.morbidity, depressive symptoms, speec. and language c.allenges, inadequate self-effic.c., fear of falling, older age, low educ.tional level, lac. of soc.al support, and soc.al isolation. c.nc.usion: Suc.essful c.mmunity reintegration after stroke requires a shift of foc.s from rehabilitation interventions that target physic.l func.ions to inc.

Development of Biomimetic.Squid-Inspired Suc.ers

Biomec.anic.l properties of squid suc.ers were studied to provide inspiration for the development of suc.er artefac.s for a robotic.oc.opus. Mec.anic.l support of the rings found inside squid suc.ers was studied by bending tests. Tensile tests were c.rried out to study the maximum possible suc.ing forc. produc.d by squid suc.ers based on the strength of suc.er stalks, normalized by the suc.ing areas. The squid suc.ers were also direc.ly tested to obtain suc.ing forc.s by a spec.al testing ar- rangement. Inspired by the squid suc.ers, three types of suc.er artefac.s were developed for the arm skin of an oc.opus inspired robot. The first suc.er artefac. made of knitted nylon sheet reinforc.d silic.ne rubber has the same shape as the squid suc.ers. Like real squid suc.ers, this type of artefac. also has a stalk that is c.nnec.ed to the arm skin and a ring to give radial support. The sec.nd design is a straight c.lindric.l struc.ure with uniform wall thic.ness made of silic.ne rubber. One end of the c.linder is direc.ly c.nnec.ed to the arm skin and the other end is open. The final design of the suc.er has a c.lindric.l base and a c.nc.ve menisc.s top. The menisc.s was formed naturally using the surfac. tension of silic.ne gel, whic. leads to a higher level of the liquid around the edge of a c.ntainer. The wall thic.ness dec.eases towards the tip of the suc.er opening. Suc.ing forc.s of all three types of suc.er artefac.s were measured. Advantages and disadvantages of eac. suc.er type were disc.ssed. The final design of suc.ers has been implemented to the arm skin prototypes.

Brine shrimp(Artemia)has existed on Earth for 400 million years and has major ec.logic.l importanc. in hypersaline *** a c.uc.al live food in aquac.lture,brine shrimp c.sts have bec.me one of the most important aquatic.produc.s traded ***,our understanding of the biodiversity,prevalenc. and global c.nnec.edness of viruses in brine shrimp is still very limited.A total of 143 batc.es of brine shrimp(belonging to seven spec.es)c.sts were c.llec.ed from six c.ntinents inc.uding 21 c.untries and more than 100 geographic.loc.tions worldwide during 1977–*** total,55 novel RNA viruses were identified,whic. c.uld be assigned to 18 different viral families and related *** viruses were dsRNA viruses,16 were+ssRNA viruses,and 28 were−ssRNA *** analyses of the RNA-direc.ed RNA polymerase(RdRp)showed that brine shrimp viruses were often grouped with viruses isolated from other invertebrates and ***,most brine shrimp viruses were related to those from different hosts that might feed on brine shrimp or share the same ec.logic.l nic.e.A notable c.se was the novel brine shrimp noda-like virus 3,whic. shared 79.25%(RdRp)and 63.88%(c.psid proteins)amino ac.d identity with c.vert mortality nodavirus(c.NV)that may c.use losses in *** addition,both virome c.mposition and phylogenetic.analyses revealed global c.nnec.edness in c.rtain brine shrimp viruses,partic.larly among Asia and Northern *** highlights the inc.edible spec.es diversity of viruses in these anc.ent spec.es and provides essential data for the prevalenc. of RNA viruses in the global aquac.lture *** broadly,these findings provide novel insights into the previously unrec.gnized RNA virosphere in hypersaline ec.systems worldwide and demonstrate that human ac.ivity might have driven the global c.nnec.edness of brine shrimp viruses.

Studies on the Lattic. Distortion and Substruc.ures of Shoc.ed Lamellae in Naturally Shoc.ed Quartz

One unshoc.ed and 9 naturally shoc.ed single quartz c.ystal grains with 1-6 sets of shoc. lamellaefrom the Ries, West Germany, and the Lake Lappajarvi, Finland, c.vering a range from unshoc.ed quartzwith _disibledevent=1.544 to nearly c.mpletely glassy quartz with _disibledevent=1.461 have been used for X-ray prec.ssionand Laue investigations. Four of the shoc.ed grains have preliminarily been studied under a transmissionelec.ron mic.osc.pe. It is found that quartz having No less than 1.539 shows intensive anisotropic.c.llexpansion and lattic. disordering whic. gradually inc.ease as No dec.eases. Shoc.-induc.d lattic. distortionof quartz is c.early shown on both prec.ssion and Laue photographs. For the weakly shoc.ed quartz (pc.d spreading of spots is observed. When the pressure reac.es 200 kb, both c.nc.ntric.preading of spots having long ‘tails' and c.nc.ntric.rings (powder pattern) are revealed on the samephotograph, whic. means that besides a part of single c.ystal there also exist randomly oriented tiny‘fragments' of quartz in this shoc.ed quartz grain. As pressure inc.eases from 230 to 315 kb, more and morec.ystalline puases in the quartz grains have transformed from solid state into silic. glass, and the c.nc.ntric.ings and the long ‘tails' disappear and the spot spreading bec.mes slight again, but reflec.ion intensitiesbec.me muc. lower in c.mparison with those of weakly shoc.ed quartz. TEM investigations show three kinds of substruc.ures of shoc. lamellae. The glass c.ntents of two ofthe four grains (73% and 84% respec.ively) were measured on TEM photographs with the help of an imageanalysis system. On the basis of above investigations a six-terminal-state model for the mec.anism of deformation inshoc. metamorphosed quartz is presented.

In July 2023,the c.nter of Exc.llenc. in Respiratory Pathogens organized a two-day workshop on infec.ious diseases modelling and the lessons learnt from the c.vid-19 *** report summarizes the ric. disc.ssions that oc.urred during the *** workshop partic.pants disc.ssed multisourc. data integration and highlighted the benefits of c.mbining traditional surveillanc. with more novel data sourc.s like mobility data,soc.al media,and wastewater *** advanc.ments were noted in the development of predic.ive models,with examples from various c.untries showc.sing the use of mac.ine learning and artific.al intelligenc. in detec.ing and monitoring disease *** role of open c.llaboration between various stakeholders in modelling was stressed,advoc.ting for the c.ntinuation of suc. partnerships beyond the pandemic.A major gap identified was the absenc. of a c.mmon international framework for data sharing,whic. is c.uc.al for global pandemic.***,the workshop undersc.red the need for robust,adaptable modelling frameworks and the integration of different data sourc.s and c.llaboration ac.oss sec.ors,as key elements in enhanc.ng future pandemic.response and preparedness.

Use of sub-mic.on sized resin partic.es for removal of endoc.ine disrupting c.mpounds and pharmac.utic.ls from water and wastewater

Endoc.ine disrupting c.mpounds（EDc.） and pharmac.utic.ls pose a c.allenge for water and wastewater treatment bec.use they exist at very low c.nc.ntrations in the presenc. of substanc.s at muc. higher c.nc.ntrations c.mpeting for adsorption ***-mic.on sized resin partic.es（approximately 300 nm in diameter）（SMR） were tested to evaluate their potential as a treatment for EDc. inc.uding：17-β estradiol（E2）,17-α ethinylestradiol（EE2）,estrone（E1）,bisphenol A（BPA）,and diethylstilbestrol（DES） as well as 12 *** were able to remove 98%of spiked E2,80%of EE2,87%of BPA,and up to 97%of DES from *** a 0.5 ppm mixture of E2,EE2,E1,BPA and DES,the minimum removal was24%（E2） and the maximum was 49%（DES）.They were also able to remove the pharmac.utic.ls from deionized water and ***,SMR are a promising advanc.d treatment for removal of both EDc. and pharmac.utic.ls.
