The aim of this study is the investig.tion of the impact of stress of Portug.ese subjects in situations of economic insufficiency and unemployment on executive function and quality of life and the coping.strateg.es and resilience skills used. The sample consists of 41 participants. The psychometric instruments used are validated for Portug.ese population, measure (perceived) stress, coping. material deprivation, resilience and quality of life, defined by World Health Org.nization. Executive function has been evaluated throug. performances at Stroop and Berg.tasks. It has been concluded that, in this population, resilience skills and active coping.strateg.es are positively correlated with quality of life. Quality of life is neg.tively correlated with material deprivation. Active coping.strateg.es are supported by adequate executive function, which neurobiolog.cal substrate is dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex. Not active coping.strateg.es correlate neg.tively with cog.itive flexibility, sug.esting.the presence of a deficit at infero-lateral prefrontal cortex.

Vulnerability and Resilience to Stress and Immune and Neuroendocrine Function in Portug.ese Subjects with Psychic Anomaly (Anxiety and Depression)

The present study aimed to investig.te the impact of chronic psychosocial stress and resilience, including.at a biolog.cal level (immune and neuroendocrine function) in Portug.ese citizens with psychic anomaly/mental disorder. The sample ag.reg.ted 69 participants. It has been used the following.psychometric instruments: 21-item depression, anxiety and stress scales (DASS-21), in the Portug.ese validated version;measuring.state resilience (MSR), in the Portug.ese validated version;the Portug.ese scale of 23 questions on vulnerability to stress. Serum levels of cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, antibodies anti-viral capsid antig.n of Epstein-Barr virus, trig.ycerides, hig. density lipoprotein-cholesterol and body mass index have been measured. It has been concluded that factors of vulnerability to stress and chronic stress, of social nature (lack of social support, adverse living.conditions), correlate positively with depression, anxiety and stress, and, throug. alostatic load, are involved in a g.eater propensity for immune and neuroendocrine dysfunction in this population.

Introduction: Transcranial Mag.etic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique for brain stimulation. Repetitive TMS (rTMS) over the medial Prefrontal Cortex (mPFC), Broadman Area 10 (BA10) may stimulate transynaptically perig.nual Anterior Cing.late Cortex (pACC, BA 33), insula, amig.ala, hypothalamus and connected branches of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) involved in stressorevoked cardiovascular reactivity. Stressors are associated with an increase in sympathetic cardiac control, a decrease in parasympathetic control, or both, and, consequently, an increase in systolic/stroke volume, total vascular impedance/resistance and heart rate, a decrease of baroreflex sensitivity, i.e., an increase in blood pressure/arterial tension. Objectives and Aims: The present work aims, using.TMS and according.y to g.anaros modeling. based on functional neuroimag.ng.studies and previous neuroanatomical data from animal models, to probe the connectivity of brain systems involved in stressor-evoked cardiovascular reactivity and to explore TMS potential as a tool for detection and stratification of individual differences concerning.this reactivity and hemorreolog.cal risk factors correlated with the development of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). Methods: Both subjects, a 52 years old male and a 40 years old female with previous increased Low Frequency (LF)/Hig. Frequency (HF) Heart Rate Variability (HRV) ratios (respectively, 4.209/3.028) without decompensated cardiorespiratory symptoms, g.ve informed consent, and ethico-leg.l issues have been observed. Electroencephalog.aphic (EEg. monitoring.has been performed for safety purposes. This article reviews the constructs of stress, appraisal, coping. according.to a transactional perspective, and executive function, and presents a stress control rating.scale (ECOSTRESS), which desig. is founded in these constructs. This psychometric tool is useful in the assessment of cog.itive control of stress, correlated with the function of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. It has been validated for its use in the assessment of Portug.ese people in situations of stress related to unemployment and economic insufficiency. Also, within the context of the cog.itive control of stress, it is hig.lig.ted the usefulness of low resolution brain electromag.etic tomog.aphy (LORETA).

Introduction: Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive, technique for brain stimulation. Anodal stimulation causes neuronal depolarisation and long.term potentiation, while cathodal stimulation causes hyperpolarisation and long.term depression. Stressors are associated with an increase in sympathetic cardiac control, a decrease in parasympathetic control, or both. Associated with these reactions is a frequently reported increase in Low Frequency (LF) Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a decrease in Hig. Frequency (HF) power, and/or an increase in the LF/HF ratio. Objectives and aims: The present work aims to explore the tDCS potential in the modulation of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), throug. indirect stimulation of Anterior Cing.late Cortex (ACC). Methods: Two subjects, a 39 year old female and a 49 year old male, g.ve informed consent. Saline soaked synthetic spong.s involving.two, thick, metalic (stainless steel) rectang.es, with an area of 25 cm2 each have been used as electrodes, connected to Iomed Phoresor II Auto device. It has been delivered a 2 mA current, for 20 minutes, over the left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC) (Anode). Spectrum analysis (cStress software) of HRV has been performed before and after tDCS administration. Results: The female/male subject results of LF power, HF power and LF/HF ratio, before tDCS administration, were, respectively: 50.1 nu/60 nu, 46.1 nu/21.7 nu and 1.087/2.771;and, after tDCS administration, respectively: 33.5 nu/52.7 nu, 47.6 nu/ 22.8 nu and 0.704/2.312. Conclusions: tDCS over the left DLPFC (left ACC) increased parasympathetic activity and decreased sympathetic activity, sug.esting.the importance of tDCS in the manag.ment of stress-related disorders.

The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effect of a hig.-fat （HF） diet, energ. restriction and exercise on the expression of vascular endothelial g.owth factor （VEg.）, ang.opoietin （Ang. I and 2, and their receptors in rat corpus cavernosum （CC）. Male Wistar rats were fed adlibitum with an H F diet for 8 or 16 weeks. After 8 weeks of the H F diet, a g.oup of rats was subjected to energ. restriction with or without exercise for 8 weeks. Control animals had free access to standard diet for the same period. After euthanasia, blood was collected and the penises removed for immunofluorescence assays （VEg., VEg. receptor （VEg.R） I and 2, Ang., Ang. and Tie2） and semiquantification of VEg., VEg.R 1, VEg.R2, Ang., Ang., Tie2, endothelial nitric oxide synthase （eNOS） and Aktlphospho-Akt by Western blotting. HF diet-fed rats exhibited lower hig.-density lipoprotein cholesterol （HDL-c） levels, hig.er systolic blood pressure and an increased atherog.nic index. A sig.ificant increase in Ang. expression in the CC was verified and coupled to a decrease in VEg. and VEg.Rs. The Akt pathway was activated by the HF diet. Energ. restriction and exercise increased eNOS expression and restored most HF diet-induced modifications except for VEg.R2 expression. These results emphasize the role of diet on vascular function reg.lation, demonstrating.that cavernous imbalance of VEg./VEg.Rs and Ang./Tie2 systems occurs before serum lipid chang.s and obesity onset, antedating.structural atherosclerotic features.

Economic insufficiency causes stress and neg.tive affects. Poverty is self-perpetuated, also due to a particular pattern of economic behaviors induced by neg.tive affects and stress. Often, loneliness occurs tog.ther with economic insufficiency. For this study, it has been selected a sample of convenience. A positive correlation between anxiety/depression and neg.tive affects is presented. Dispositional optimism and social support, factors which contribute to health, serve as buffers, in neg.tive correlation, of the neg.tive impact of neg.tive affects, due to financial restraint, on health. Financial manag.ment is neg.tively correlated with the lack of cardiovascular health, and cardiovascular dysfunction correlates positively with loneliness, in this study. Positive affects correlate positively with resilience skills, which correlate neg.tively with depression. Within this context, psychobiolog.cal therapeutic interventions and psychotherapy, which also targ.t psycholog.cal dysfunction related to economic behavior of persons in a situation of poverty, would be beneficial.

Effects of Tecartherapy on Body Tissue: A Systematic Review

Electrophysical devices based on diathermy are one of the modalities used by many professionals to treat pain. The objective of this study was to identify the effects of Tecartherapy on healthy and unhealthy tissues. A systematic review of Tecartherapy technolog. was carried out. Articles published up to the year 2023 were investig.ted. The search arg.ment used was “Capacitive-resistive electrical transfer” OR “Tecar” OR “Therapy Tecar” OR “CRET” in the BVS, Cochrane, PEDro, PubMed, IEEE Explore databases, Scielo and Web of Science. As for the main results of using.Tecartherapy, there is an increase in temperature. In healthy tissues there is an increase in local blood flow, a decrease in muscle fatig.e and an increase in muscle flexibility. In addition to the effects observed on healthy tissues, pain reduction and improved joint function were also observed. It was concluded that this technolog. has similar effects to other diathermy, but Tecartherapy proved to be safer and more comfortable. .
