Mapping fractional landscape soils and vegetation components from Hyperion satellite imagery using an unsupervised machinelearning workflow

An unsupervised machine-learning workflow is proposed for estimating fractional landscape soils and vegetation components from remotely sensed hyperspectral *** workflow is applied to eO-1 Hyperion satellite imagery collected near Ibirací,Minas Gerais,*** proposed workflow includes subset feature selection,learning,and estimation *** training with landscape feature class realizations provide a hypersurface from which to estimate mixtures of soil(e.g.0.5 exceedance for pixels:75%clay-rich Nitisols,15%iron-rich Latosols,and 1%quartz-rich Arenosols)and vegetation(e.g.0.5 exceedance for pixels:4%Aspen-like trees,7%Blackberry-like trees,0%live grass,and 2%dead grass).The process correctly maps forests and iron-rich Latosols as being coincident with existing drainages,and correctly classifies the clay-rich Nitisols and grasses on the intervening *** classifications are independently corroborated visually(Google earth)and quantitatively(random soil samples and crossplots of field spectra).Some mapping challenges are the underestimation of forest fractions and overestimation of soil fractions where steep valley shadows exist,and the under representation of classified grass in some dry areas of the Hyperion *** preliminary results provide impetus for future hyperspectral studies involving airborne and satellite sensors with higher signal-to-noise and smaller footprints.

Variable-top stem biomass models at the tree level for second growth forests of roble (Nothofagus obliqua), rauli(Nothofagus alpina), and coigüe (Nothofagus dombeyi) were fitted by a simultaneous density-integral system, which combines a stem taper model and a wood basic density model. For each model, an autoregressive structure of order 2 and a power equation of residual variance were incorporated to reduce residual autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity, respectively. By using dummy variables in the regression analysis, zonal effects on the parameters in the variable-top stem biomass equations were detected in roble. Consequently, equations for clusters of zones were obtained. These equations presented significant parameters and a high precision in both fitting and validation processes (i.e., CVespectively), demonstrating that they are unbiased. The advantage of these types of functions is that they provide estimates of volume and biomass of sections of the stem, defined between any two points of the stem in the three species. Thus, depending on the final use of the wood and the dimensions of the tree, a stem fraction can be quantified in units of volume and the remaining fraction in units of weight.

Recovery of valuable metals from waste cables by employing mechanical processing followed by spouted bed elutriation

Cables and wires, which are essential parts of equipment for the transmission of both information and electricity, contain valuable materials including copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al). This experimental work evaluates the use of mechanical processing (grinding and sieving), followed by spouted bed elutriation, for separation of the valuable materials (steel-coated copper, copper, and aluminum) present in waste coaxial and internet cables. A recovery efficiency of approximately 90% was achieved for the steel-coated copper in coaxial cables. For in ternet cables, the copper recovery efficiency was approximately 87%. These findings dem on strate that it is possible to separate, recover, and recycle the valuable materials (metals) present in waste cables using simple, low-cost, and efficient mechanical processing followed by spouted bed elutriation.

The adsorption capacities for the removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solutions by six carbon nanomaterials have been evaluated. Single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes as received and after oxidation treatment, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide are the materials with different dimension and functionalization compared in this research. Carbon nanotubes have been modified using hydrogen peroxide as oxidizing agent under microwave radiation. The oxidation treatment on carbon nanotubes has a positive effect increasing the adsorbent–adsorbate interaction. Rate-controlling mechanisms and equilibrium data are analyzed using non-linear models. Non-linear method is proposed as the most suitable method for determining the kinetic and equilibrium parameters. The values of adsorption energy(e) obtained from the Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm,have been found around 0.371 and 0.870 k J·mol-1, indicating physical adsorption. Therefore, the pseudo-second order model represents better the kinetic experimental data. The results show that the Langmuir isotherm provides a slightly better fit to the experimental data compared with the Freundlich isotherm, indicating homogeneous distribution of active sites on carbon nanomaterials and monolayer adsorption. The separation factors RLare found in the range of 0–1, suggesting that the adsorption process is suitable for all adsorbents. The mechanisms for hexavalent chromium removal have been proposed as electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding.

Optimizing Nitrogen Use efficiency for No-Till Corn Production by Improving Root Growth and Capturing NO_(3)-N in Subsoil

Subsoil acidity restricts root growth and reduces crop yields in many parts of the world. More than half of the fertilizer nitrogen(N) applied in crop production is currently lost to the environment. This study aimed to investigate the effect of gypsum application on the efficiency of N fertilizer in no-till corn(Zea mays L.) production in southern Brazil. A field experiment examined the effects of surface-applied gypsum(0, 5, 10, and 15 Mg ha^(-1)) and top-dressed ammonium nitrate(NH_4NO_3)(60, 120, and 180 kg N ha^(-1)) on corn root length, N uptake, and grain yield. A greenhouse experiment was conducted using undisturbed soil columns collected from the field experiment site to evaluate NO_3-N leaching, N uptake, and root length with surface-applied gypsum(0 and 10 Mg ha^(-1)) and top-dressed NH_4NO_3(0 and 180 kg N ha^(-1)). Amelioration of subsoil acidity due to gypsum application increased corn root growth,N uptake, grain yield, and N use efficiency. Applying gypsum to the soil surface increased corn grain yield by 19%–38% and partial factor productivity of N(PFPN) by 27%–38%, depending on the N application rate. Results of the undisturbed soil column greenhouse experiment showed that improvement of N use efficiency by gypsum application was due to the higher N uptake from NO_3-N in the subsoil as a result of increased corn root length. Our results suggest that ameliorating subsoil acidity with gypsum in a no-till corn system could increase N use efficiency, improve grain yield, and reduce environmental risks due to NO_3-N leaching.

Given the cultural and environmental potential presented by historical water infrastructures in urban contexts,this article states the evidence of a not much documented urban phenomenon in Portugal,the refurbishment of water heritage protected areas motivated by european-based regeneration *** employing a case-study design,four good practices-placed inÉvora,Lisbon,Braga and Guimarães-are chosen to enlighten this growing and aware *** assets located there-theÁgua de Prata Aqueduct,theÁguas Livres Aqueduct,the Sete Fontes water-supply system and the Zona de Couros industrial area,respectively-are geographical,historical and culturally characterised,while the projects that concern them are documented by visiting the areas and analysing the available ***,open-data platforms and heritage protection decrees are processed to graphically code the topography,hydrology,urban land use,infrastructures,landmarks and protected areas,employing QGIS free software for Geographic Information *** a result,the four practices are documented,discussed and compared.A table assesses and summarises their pre-existing and currently added values and a series of diagrams illustrates the landscape changes *** graphics validate the practices and update the status of the assets,enhancing the rediscovery of the existing landscapes and showing the main challenges and future opportunities faced by these areas.

Because of the presence of modified warp factors in metric tensors,we use deformed AdS5 spaces to apply the AdS/CFT correspondence to calculate the spectra for even and odd glueballs,scalar and vector mesons,and baryons with different *** the glueball cases,we derive their Regge trajectories and compare them with those related to the pomeron and the *** the scalar and vector mesons,as well as baryons,the determined masses are compatible with the *** particular,for these hadrons we found Regge trajectories compatible with another holographic approach as well as with the hadronic spectroscopy,which present an universal Regge slope of approximately 1.1 GeV^2.

Leaf water potential and gas exchange of eucalypt clonal seedlings to leaf solar protectant

This experiment was carried out in acclimatized greenhouses with seedlings of two hybrid clones of eucalyptus urophylla×eucalyptus grandis. A sunscreen protector consisting of 62.5% calcium carbonate was sprayed on the seedlings at weekly intervals. Water stress was induced by suspending irrigation until the soil reached 30% available water and water was then replaced so that it returned to field capacity. Gas exchange and leaf water status were measured after 50 days. The experiment was set up in a 4×2 factorial randomized block design in four distinct environments:(1) temperatures less than 21.2℃ and vapor pressure deficit of 0.15 kPa;(2) intermediate temperatures of 24.2℃ and vapor pressure deficit of 0.69 kPa;(3) high temperatures of 27.0℃ and high vapor pressure deficit of 1.4 kPa; and,(4) high temperature of 27.0℃ and vapor pressure deficit below 1.10 kPa. Two leaf sun protector treatments were used, with five replications each. High atmospheric demand acted as a stress factor for the seedlings during the initial growth *** of leaf sunscreen protector provided beneficial effects in maintaining optimum water status and gas exchanges of the plants under water stress.

Soil boron fertilization:The role of nutrient sources and rootstocks in citrus production

Boron （B） is a key element for citrus production, especially in tropical regions, where the nutrient availability is commonly low in the soil. In addition, information about doses, fertilizer sources, methods of application, and particularly, differential nutrient demand of scion/rootstock combinations are required for efficient fertilization of commercial groves. In a non-irri- gated sweet orange orchard （cv. Natal）, grafted onto Rangpur lime, Swingle citrumelo or Sunki mandarin, we studied the application of two sources of B： boric acid （17% B, soluble in water） and ulexite （12% B, partiaJly soluble in water） at four levels of supply （control without B, and soil application of 2, 4 and 6 kg ha-1 yr-1 of B）. The experiment was carried out for three years （2004-2006）. Boron availability in the soil and concentration in the leaves, as well as the fruit yield and quality of trees were evaluated. Soil B extracted with hot water and total leaf B positively correlated with doses of the nutrient applied to the trees. Levels of B in the soil and in the leaves did not vary with fertilizer sources. Fruit yield of trees grafted onto Rangpur lime and Swingle citrumelo was more responsive to B doses than those grafted onto Sunki mandarin. The maximum fruit yield of trees grafted onto Swingle was obtained with 3.2 kg ha-1 yr-1 of B, and leaf B level of 280 mg kg-1 that point out to a highest demand for B when this combination was compared with other rootstocks. Furthermore, fertilization with B did not affect the quality of fruits, but correlated with B and potassium （K） concentrations in the leaves. These results also support that the current recommendations for levels of B in leaves should be revisited.
