The digestive gland of the apple snail Pomacea canaliculata lodges two types of pigmented corpuscles(identified as C and K corpuscles)which has been proposed as endosymbiont/*** corpuscular types are always present in the digestive gland of adult snails,they are released into the tubuloacinar lumen and are later expelled in the *** their part,hatchlings lack any C or K corpuscles in the digestive gland as well as in their feces,whereas C corpuscles appear in both the gland and feces within one week after ***,it is possible that the detritivorous hatchlings acquire the putative C-endosymbiont from feces in the sediments where they live,***‘lateral’or‘horizontal’*** possibility was put to test in an experiment in which we prevented any lateral transmission,by a 7-days aseptic culture,with no food,of aseptically obtained *** the end of the experiment,we observed that most juveniles had survived the culture period,and hence the digestive glands and feces of survivors were studied by light microscopy of resin embedded,toluidine blue-stained *** studied glands and fecal samples showed C *** is concluded that lateral transmission of the endosymbiont,if any,is not indispensable for the acquisition of the endosymbiont by hatchlings.

Upper Cretaceous trench deposits of the Neo-Tethyan subduction zone： Jiachala Formation from Yarlung Zangbo suture zone in Tibet, China

The history of convergence between the India and the Asia plates, and of their subsequent collision which triggered the Himalayan orogeny is recorded in the Yarlung Zangbo suture zone. Exposed along the southern side of the suture, turbidites of the the Jiachala Formation fed largely from the Gangdese arc have long been considered as post-collisional foreland-basin deposits based on the reported occurrence of Paleocene-early Eocene dinoflagellate cysts and pollen assemblages. Because magmatic activity in the Gangdese arc continued through the Late Cretaceous and Paleogene, this scenario is incompatible with U-Pb ages of detrital zircons invariably older than the latest Cretaceous. To solve this conundrum, we carried out detailed stratigraphic, sedimentological, paleontological, and provenance analyses in the Gyangze and Sajia areas of southern Tibet,China. The Jiachala Formation consists of submarine fan deposits that lie in fault contact with the Zongzhuo *** petrography together with U-Pb ages and Hf isotope ratios of detrital zircons indicate provenance from the Gangdese arc and central Lhasa terrane. Well preserved pollen or dinoflagellate cysts microfossils were not found in spite of careful research, and the youngest age obtained from zircon grain was ～84 Ma. Based on sedimentary facies, provenance analysis and tectonic position, we suggest that the Jiachala Formation was deposited during the Late Cretaceous(~88–84 Ma) in the trench formed along the southern edge of Asia during subduction of Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere.

The HP model for protein structure prediction abstracts the fact that hydrophobicity is a dominant force in the protein folding process. This challenging combinatorial optimization problem has been widely addressed through metaheuristics. The evaluation function is a key component for the success of metaheuristics; the poor discrimination of the conventional evaluation function of the HP model has motivated the proposal of alternative formulations for this component. This comparative analysis inquires into the effectiveness of seven different evaluation functions for the HP model. The degree of discrimination provided by each of the studied functions, their capability to preserve a rank ordering among potential solutions which is consistent with the original objective of the HP model, as well as their effect on the performance of local search methods are analyzed. The obtained results indicate that studying alternative evaluation schemes for the HP model represents a highly valuable direction which merits more attention.

Aim: To observe the acute effect of the organophosphorous insecticide malathion on testicular function in mice. Methods: The effects of a single dose of malathion [240 mg/kg (1/12 LD50)] on plasma acetylcholinesterase (ACE) activity, spermatozoa (epididymal cauda counts and teratozoospermia), testis and plasma testosterone concentration) were evaluated at day 1,8, 16, 35 and 40 after treatment. Results: The sperm count was decreased significantly 24 h after treatment and teratozoospermia was increased at day 35 and 40. The height of the seminiferous epithelium and the diameter of tubular lumen were decreased at day 8. The percentage of tubular blockade was increased between day 8 and 35. A decrease in testosterone plasma level was observed at day 16 after treatment. Conclusion: Malathion damages male reproduction. The depletion of seminiferous tubules and the increase in teratozoospermia may be a genotoxic damage to the renewing spermatogonia, but the possibility of spermatogenic/ spermiogenic disfunction due to a decrease in the plasma testosterone level can not be ruled out.

Robotic surgery for rectal cancer: Current immediate clinical and oncological outcomes

Laparoscopic rectal surgery continues to be a challenging operation associated to a steep learning curve. Robotic surgical systems have dramatically changed minimally invasive surgery. Three-dimensional, magnified and stable view, articulated instruments, and reduction of physiologic tremors leading to superior dexterity and ergonomics. Therefore, robotic platforms could potentially address limitations of laparoscopic rectal surgery. It was aimed at reviewing current literature on short-term clinical and oncological(pathological) outcomes after robotic rectal cancer surgery in comparison with laparoscopic surgery. A systematic review was performed for the period 2002 to 2014. A total of 1776 patients with rectal cancer underwent minimally invasive robotic treatment in 32 studies. After robotic and laparoscopic approach to oncologic rectal surgery, respectively, mean operating time varied from 192-385 min, and from 158-297 min; mean estimated blood loss was between 33 and 283 mL, and between 127 and 300 mL; mean length of stay varied from 4-10 d; and from 6-15 d. Conversion after robotic rectal surgery varied from 0% to 9.4%, and from 0 to 22% after laparoscopy. There was no difference between robotic(0%-41.3%) and laparoscopic(5.5%-29.3%) surgery regarding morbidity and anastomotic complications(respectively, 0%-13.5%, and 0%-11.1%). Regarding immediate oncologic outcomes, respectively among robotic and laparoscopic cases, positive circumferential margins varied from 0% to 7.5%, and from 0% to 8.8%; the mean number of retrieved lymph nodes was between 10 and 20, and between 11 and 21; and the mean distal resection margin was from 0.8 to 4.7 cm, and from 1.9 to 4.5 cm. Robotic rectal cancer surgery is being undertaken by experienced surgeons. However, the quality of the assembled evidence does not support definite conclusions about most studies variables. This study aims at investigating the effects of foliar application of aqueous solutions of La3+and Ce3+nitrates on soybean plants(Glycine max).First,we observe that Triton HW 1000 surfactant at 0.01 vol%reduces droplets contact angle and increases their drying *** greenhouse conditions,the foliar treatments do not affect chlorophyll content,plant height,number of leaves,number of pods,number of seeds per pod,and average seed ***,the treatments induce phytotoxicity since foliar injuries appear after the *** X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy combined to scanning electron microscopy shows that the leaf lesions are positively correlated to accumulation of Ce and La on the leaf surface and also promote structural alteration to the epidermal cells.X-ray absorption near edge structure shows that the La and Ce nitrates are partially bio transformed into oxides by the leaves which might explain the harmful effects.

Hyperspectral images are multidimensional massive sets of information that have shown a great potential for different kind of applications as urban mapping,environmental management,vegetation and crops supervision and mineral ***,due to its high dimensional nature and the high variability of the spectral information,the dimensionality reduction process is one of the main challenges in processing hyperspectral *** aim of dimensionality reduction is to eliminate redundant information and simplify the subsequent processes of classification and the search of *** this context,several dimensionality reduction methods have been proposed,but most of them are not flexible enough to deal with the particular features of the hyperspectral *** this way,the use of intelligent methods as neural networks and specially an unsupervised approach as self-organized maps,may improve the dimensionality reduction stage and the final classification *** paper proposes an unsupervised method for the dimensionality reduction of hyperspectral images based on Kohonen self-organized maps,which,compared with other traditional methods such as principal component analysis(PCA)and wavelet decomposition,provides better classification *** results provided in this paper use an RBF(radial basis function)*** average,the proposed method provides a 64%dimensionality reduction and an 88.5%classification *** results suggest that the dimensionality reduction algorithm based on self-organized maps is an efficient approach compared with other popular *** is due to the ability of self-organized maps to automatically detect(self-organizing)relationships within the set of input patterns,which provides flexibility to deal with the special features of the hyperspectral images.
