Resistant starch: Implications of dietary inclusion on gut health and growth in pigs:a review

Starch from cereal grains,pulse grains,and tubers is a major energy substrate in swine rations constituting up to 55%of the *** pigs,starch digestion is initiated by salivary and then pancreaticα-amylase,and has as final step the digestion of disaccharides by the brush-border enzymes in the small intestine that produce monosaccharides(glucose)for *** starch(RS)is the proportion of starch that escapes the enzymatic digestion and absorption in the small *** undigested starch reaches the distal small intestine and hindgut for microbial fermentation,which produces short-chain fatty acids(SCFA)for *** in turn,influence microbial ecology and gut health of *** fermentative metabolites exert their benefits on gut health through promoting growth and proliferation of enterocytes,maintenance of intestinal integrity and thus immunity,and modulation of the microbial community in part by suppressing the growth of pathogenic bacteria while selectively enhancing beneficial ***,RS has the potential to confer prebiotic effects and may contribute to the improvement of intestinal health in pigs during the post-weaning *** these benefits to the well-being of pigs,RS has a contradictory effect due to lower energetic efficiency of fermented *** starch absorption *** varying amount and type of RS interact differently with the digestion process along the gastrointestinal tract affecting its energy efficiency and host physiological responses including feed intake,energy metabolism,and feed *** of research indicate that the use of RS as prebiotic may improve gut health and thereby,reduce the incidence of post-weaning diarrhea(PWD)and associated *** review summarizes our current knowledge on the effects of RS on microbial ecology,gut health and growth performance in pigs.

The Langjiexue Group is an in situ sedimentary sequence rather than an exotic block: Constraints from coeval Upper Triassic strata of the Tethys Himalaya(Qulonggongba Formation)

The Upper Triassic Langjiexue Group in southeastern Tibet has long been an enigmatic geological unit. It belongs tectonically to the northern Tethys Himalayan zone, but provenance signatures of the detritus it contains are significantly different from those of typical Tethys Himalayan sandstones. Because the Langjiexue Group is everywhere in fault contact with Tethys Himalayan strata, its original paleogeographic position has remained controversial for a long time. According to some researchers, the Langjiexue Group was deposited onto the northern edge of the Indian passive continental margin, whereas others interpreted it as an independent block accreted to the northern Indian margin only during final India-Asia convergence and collision in the Paleocene. This study compares the Langjiexue Group and coeval Upper Triassic strata of the southern Tethys Himalayan zone(Qulonggongba Formation). Our new provenance data indicate that Qulonggongba Formation sandstones contain common felsic volcanic rock fragments, minor plagioclase, and euhedral to subhedral zircon grains yielding Late Paleozoic to Triassic ages. These provenance features compare well with those of the Langjiexue Group. Because the Qulonggongba Formation certainly belongs to the Tethys Himalayan zone, the provenance similarity with the Langjiexue Group indicates that the latter is also an in situ Tethys Himalayan sedimentary sequence rather than part of an exotic block. Volcanic detritus including Late Paleozoic to Triassic zircon grains in both Langjiexue Group and Qulonggongba Formation are interpreted to have been derived from the distant Gondwanide orogen generated by Pan-Pacific subduction beneath the southeastern margin of Gondwana. The Qulonggongba Formation, deposited above marlstones of the lower Upper Triassic Tulong Group, is overlain by India-derived coastal quartzose sandstones of the uppermost Triassic Derirong Formation. Contrasting climate drivers of seasonal growth in western vs. eastern Mexican mountain conifer forests

Hydroclimate affects the radial growth responses of trees, but the drivers of their spatial and population variability are not sufficiently understood. We addressed this issue by sampling several conifer populations located at the same latitude, but at different longitude and elevation in western(W) and eastern(E) Mexican regions. We used dendroecology to disentangle how earlywood width(EW), latewood width(LW) and adjusted LW(LWadj),i.e. the residuals after removing EW influences on LW, responded to climate variables(temperature and precipitation), climate indices(Southern Oscillation Index, SOI, Nino 3.4, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, PDO) and a drought index(Standardised Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index, SPEI). The W species(Pinus herrerae Martinez, Pinus durangensis Martinez, Abies durangensis Martínez and Cupressus lusitanica Mill.) showed lower growth rates than the E species(Pinus hartwegii Lindl., Picea mexicana Martinez, Pseudotsuga menziesii(Mirb.) Franco and Abies vejari Martinez). Growth in W benefits mostly from high precipitation in the prior winter and current spring and it is limited by high temperatures in spring, whereas growth in the E showed similar but weaker ***, positive(negative) correlations were found in radial growth with the Nino 3.4(SOI) and the PDO from the prior to current autumns, which were again stronger in absolute terms in the W than in the E regions,excepting SOI in summer. In the W, P. durangensis and C. lusitanica were the least and most responsive species to spring drought, respectively;whilst P. menziesii and A. vejari were very responsive to spring drought compared to P. hartwegii in the E. Our results suggest greater responsiveness to hydroclimate and atmospheric patterns in the W than in the E region. Soil organic carbon storage in forest restoration models and environmental conditions

The scale of forest and landscape restoration is expected to increase during the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and its contribution to the provision of critical ecosystem services to *** models of forest restoration may improve ecosystem services,including soil organic carbon(SOC)storage.A review was carried out to access:(1)the variability of SOC storage between worldwide forest restoration models and,(2)the effects of climate,soil class,soil texture,and vegetation type on SOC *** reviewed 119 primary studies with information on SOC and soil texture for different forest restoration *** restoration models were grouped into four categories:natural regeneration,monocultures,agroforestry,and mixed *** data was extracted from these four restoration models,other land uses(cropland,bare land,grassland,and natural forest),climate regimes,and soil *** SOC storage in the forest restoration models and other land uses at a global scale ranged between 0.1 to 514 Mg ha^(-1).The overall mean value for SOC storage was higher for natural regeneration(112 Mg ha^(-1)),followed by agroforestry(74 Mg ha^(-1)),mixed forest(73 Mg ha^(-1)),and monocultures(68 Mg ha^(-1)).However,the average SOC storage was similar among the four restoration models in the moist warm climate *** SOC storage mean value in the moist cool zone was 23%higher than the dry cool zone(81 and 62 Mg ha^(-1),respectively),and 50%higher for the moist warm zone when compared to the dry warm climatic zone(74 and 38 Mg ha^(-1),respectively).The SOC storage of the restoration models was positively related to soil depth(0.59;p<0.01),clay content(0.29;p<0.01),and stand age(0.17;p<0.01).Globally,the mean values of SOC storage were 26,66,and 139 Mg ha^(-1) at zero-10,zero-30,and zero-100 cm depths,*** addition,sandy soils showed smaller mean values of SOC storage than medium to clay soils,especially in deeper soil ***,SOC storage was positively re

A comparative analysis of three different methods for the estimation of the basic reproduction number of dengue

The basic reproduction number,R0,is defined as the expected number of secondary cases of a disease produced by a single infection in a completely susceptible population,and can be estimated in several *** example,from the stability analysis of a compartmental model;through the use of the matrix of next generation,or from the final size of an epidemic,*** this paper we applied the method for estimating R0 of dengue fever from the initial growth phase of an outbreak,without assuming exponential growth of cases,a common assumption in many *** used three different methods of calculating R0 to compare the techniques'details and to evaluate how these techniques estimate the value of R0 of dengue using data from the city of Ribeir^ao Preto(SE of Brazil)in two *** results of the three methods are numerically different but,when we compare them using a system of differential equations developed for modeling only the first generation time,we can observe that the methods differ little in the initial growth *** conclude that the methods predict that dengue will spread in the city studied and the analysis of the data shows that the estimated values of R0 have an equal pattern overtime.

AIM： To evaluate the surface expression of triggering receptor on myeloid cell 1 （TREM-1）, class Ⅱ major histocompatibility complex molecules （HLA-DR）, and the expression of the splicing variant （svTREH-1） of TREM-1 in septic patients and those subjected to major abdominal surgery. METHODS： Using flow cytometry, we examined the surface expression of TREM-1 and HLA-DR in peripheral blood monocytes from 11 septic patients, 7 elective gastrointestinal surgical patients, and 10 healthy volunteers, svTREM-1 levels were analyzed by RT-PCR. RESULTS： Basal expression of TREM-1 and HLA- DR in healthy volunteers was 35.91±14.75 MFI and 75.8±18.3%, respectively. In septic patients, TREM-1 expression was 59.9±23.9 MFI and HLA-DR expression was 44.39±20.25%, with a significant difference between healthy and septic groups （P〈0.05） for both molecules. In the surgical patients, TREM-1 and HLA-DR expressions were 56.8±20.85 HFI and 71±13.8% before surgery and 72.65±29.92 MFI and 72.82±22.55% after surgery. TREM-1 expression was significantly different （P = 0.0087） between the samples before and after surgery and svTREM-1 expression was 0.8590± 0.1451 MF1, 0.8820±0.1460 MF1, and 2.210±0.7873 MF1 in the healthy, surgical （after surgery） and septic groups, respectively. There was a significant difference （P = 0.048） in svTREM-1 expression between the healthy and surgical groups and the septic group. CONCLUSION： TREM-1 expression is increased during systemic inflammatory conditions such as sepsis and the postoperative phase. Simultaneous low expression of HLA-DR molecules correlates with the severity of illness and increases susceptibility to infection. Additionally, TREM-1 expression is distinctly different in surgical patients at different stages of the inflammatory response before and after surgery. Thus, surface TREM-1 appears to be an endogenous signal during the course of the inflammatory response, svTREM-1 expression is significantly increased during sepsis, appearing to be a

Aim: To explore the effect of exposure to commercial Parathion~ (Pc) on the reproductive parameters (sperm and cocoon production and genotoxicity on male germ cells), the survival, the body weight and the gross anatomical changes in Eiseniafoetida. Methods: Three doses of Pc(1478, 739 and 444 mg/kg of soil) and three time intervals of exposure (5, 15 and 30 days) were used. Results: All treated animals were affected. An acute genotoxic effect, revealed by DNA fragmentation (comet assay), was seen by 5 days. Alterations in reproductive parameters were conspicuous in regard to the number of sperm, cocoons and worms born, and the histological observation of the gonads and seminal receptacles. In addition, the body weight and survival rate were decreased. Neuromuscular function was also affected. Conclusion: Earthworms are suitable bioindicators of chemical contamination of the soil, their advantage being their easy and economical handling

Influence of Inorganic Salts during the Photooxidative Process of Nitrobenzene

Into the photooxidation process, several factors such as pH, time of irradiation, dose of UV light, lamp power, contaminant concentration, turbidity of the solution and the presence of salts can interfere with the photodegradation of pollutants. This research aims to evaluate the influence of salts： NaCl, MgCl2, CaCI2, BaC12, CuCl2, Na2SO4, MgSO4, MnSO4, FeSO4, CuSO4, Na3PO4, K2CrO4 and K2Cr207 in concentrations of 0.0005 M, 0.005 M and 0.05 M during photodegradation of aqueous solution of 59.5 mg/L of nitrobenzene at a pH of 2.5. It was observed that the presence of salts such as CuCI2, CuSO4, FeSO4, K2CrO4 and K2Cr207 interfere negatively in the system UV/H202 applied for degradation of nitrobenzene; possibly by oxidation of Fe2＋ to Fe3＋ and Cu＋ to Cu2＋ in the Cr case, due to the difficulty of transforming the Cr6＋ to Cr3＋ or because these solutions have color and act as radiation absorbing filter.
