Arrested development? Investigating the role of bamboo in Araucaria Forest succession in Southern Brazil

Aims Assessing the role of a dominant native bamboo species on tree species diversity and structure in the medium *** Over a 7-year period,we studied the natural regeneration of two dominant forest types in Southern Brazil(Araucaria Forest or AF;Bamboo Forest or BF)after a bamboo(Merostachys skvortzovii Send.)die-off between 2004 and *** study was carried out in the Embrapa Research Station in Cacador,Santa Catarina State,*** Findings The die-off provided ideal conditions for the establishment of several species and it kickstarted forest succession dynamics,which in turn affected regeneration *** species richness was relatively stable with a transitory increase between 2007 and 2014 in both AF and ***,species richness rose in BF because of a relative increase in abundance of some species(especially late and secondary species)while a plunge in some pioneer species drove an increase in ***,we found that BF has a lower diversity of recruits and that density declined over time,while AF is more diverse,with a more stable *** BF,the bamboo die-off created optimal conditions for initial regeneration development(mainly fast-growing pioneer trees),which quickly transited to higher size ***,after this initial stage of pioneer recruitment,the number of recruits dropped followed by a virtual absence of growth regardless of the species group as a result of a quick bamboo *** bamboo recreated a dense understory it reduced species diversity to original levels,suggesting a self-maintaining cycle that halts forest *** the other hand,the bamboo die-off had little impact on AF where a slow recruitment process typical of old-growth forests was *** results indicate that the die-off event had a temporary effect on species diversity *** to forests where bamboos are dominant in a similar process described in other southern South American *** the first study to obser

In this paper, a novel bionic model and its performance in pattern recognition are presented and discussed. The model is constructed from a bulb model and a three-layered cortical model, mimicking the main features of the olfactory system. The olfactory bulb and cortex models are connected by feedforward and feedback fibers with distributed delays. The Breast Cancer Wisconsin dataset consisting of data from 683 patients divided into benign and malignant classes is used to demonstrate the capacity of the model to learn and recognize patterns, even when these are deformed versions of the originally learned patterns. The performance of the novel model was compared with three artificial neural networks (ANNs), a back-propagation network, a support vector machine classifier, and a radial basis function classifier. All the ANNs and the olfactory bionic model were tested in a benchmark study of a standard dataset. Experimental results show that the bionic olfactory system model can learn and classify patterns based on a small training set and a few learning trials to reflect biological intelligence to some extent.

The revegetation of mined areas poses a great challenge to the iron ore mining *** initial recovery process in degraded areas might rely on the use of Fe-resistant *** grasses, such as paspalum densum and Echinochloa crus-galli, show different resistance strategies to iron toxicity; however, these mechanisms are poorly *** Fe-resistance mechanisms and direct iron toxicity as a function of root apex removal were investigated. To achieve this purpose, both grass species were grown for up to 480 hr in a nutrient solution containing 0.019 or 7 mmol/L Fe-EDTA after the root apices had been removed or maintained. Cultivation in the presence of excess iron-induced leaf bronzing and the formation of iron plaque on the root surfaces of both grass species, but was more significant on those plants whose root apex had been removed. Iron accumulation was higher in the roots, but reached phytotoxic levels in the aerial parts as well. It did not hinder the biosynthesis of chloroplastidic pigments. No significant changes in gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence occurred in either grass when their roots were kept intact; the contrary was true for plants with excised root apices. In both studied grasses, the root apoplastic barriers had an important function in the restriction of iron translocation from the root to the aerial plant parts, especially in E. crus-galli. Root apex removal negatively influenced the iron toxicity resistance mechanisms(tolerance in p. densum and avoidance in E. crus-galli).

We have created a risk-benefit analysis(RBA)model to assist in food safety decision-making by analyzing Salmonella control in Brazilian chicken ***,we described the issues in a risk profile and used a 5x5 matrix to rank the risks associated with *** then classified the magnitude of benefits and costs of control measures using another ***,we verified the beneficial effects of recommended control measures using Quantitative Microbiological Risk Assessment(QMRA).The RBA classified Salmonella contamination as risk 6,indicating that control measures should be taken in the short and medium *** also recommended the adoption of biosecurity measures on farms to reduce the prevalence of Salmonella in birds,better control of carcass washings and chiller tank management,and information placement on packages and campaigns to raise the awareness of the population about the need to control Salmonella contamination before *** the other hand,it did not recommend better controls at scalding and *** confirmed the beneficial effects of the recommended control *** example,as Salmonella prevalence in poultry increased from 4.04 per cent to 50 per cent,the risk of infection per serving also increased from 0.0080 to *** better controls in washings and chiller tank management did not affect the risk of infection,it reduced Salmonella counts on *** assume that the presence of Salmonella on carcasses was due to improper thermal processing or cross-contamination,which increased the risk from 0.0080 to *** RBA demonstrated the logic involved in the adoption of control measures,and this can be helpful in the risk management of food safety issues.

Background: The activities carried out by soldiers in the army involve great physical demands and require intense trainings to perform combat-specific tasks. Musculoskeletal injury is a potential threat to the health and physical integrity of the soldier. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of lower limb musculoskeletal injuries among soldiers and to propose a training protocol to prevent the most frequent ***: This observational(cross-sectional) study recruited a sample of 103 soldiers who required medical attention,from a total 202 new battalion soldiers. The medical records(paper and online) had a form of running text. All data collected were recorded by the registered physicians of the battalion medical post. The records were analyzed by the following variables: medical diagnosis, injury site, mechanism, type of treatment, time loss, existence of previous injury,and recurring ***: A total of 112 musculoskeletal injuries were diagnosed in 71 soldiers, and other types of diseases/injuries were diagnosed in the other soldiers. Joint pain accounted for 55.4% of the diagnoses. The knee was the most affected site, while trauma and overload were the most common mechanisms of injury. Drug treatment was used most frequently, accounting for 58% of the cases. The majority of the sample obtained a temporary leave of absence for1 to 6 days or not at all. previous injuries and recurrence were not presented as risk factors for injury. With the data received, a protocol for the prevention of injuries to the lower limbs was ***: This study indicated that the most frequent site of injury is the knee, and joint pain is the most common diagnosis. These results may support the necessity to develop a neuromuscular training protocol to prevent lower limb injuries, which we suggest to be applied in future studies.

In this study, rapid drawdown scenarios were analyzed by means of numerical examples as well as modeling of real cases with in situ measurements. The aim of the study was to evaluate different approaches available for calculating pore water pressure distributions during and after a drawdown. To do that, a single slope subjected to a drawdown was first analyzed under different calculation alternatives, and numerical results were discussed. Simple methods, such as undrained analysis and pure flow analysis, implicitly assuming a rigid soil skeleton, lead to significant errors in pore water pressure distributions when compared with coupled flow-deformation analysis. A similar analysis was performed for the upstream slope of the Glen Shira Dam, Scotland, and numerical results were compared with field measurements during a controlled drawdown. Field records indicate that classical undrained calculations are conservative but unrealistic. Then, a recent case of a major landslide triggered by a rapid drawdown in a reservoir was interpreted. A key aspect of the case was the correct characterization of permeability of a representative soil profile. This was achieved by combining laboratory test results and a back analysis of pore water pressure time records during a period of reservoir water level fluctuations. The results highlight the difficulty of predicting whether the pore water pressure is overestimated or underestimated when using simplified approaches, and it is concluded that predicting the pore water pressure distribution in a slope after a rapid drawdown requires a coupled flow-deformation analysis in saturated and unsaturated porous media.

Mushrooms are a group of fungi with great diversity and ultra-accelerated *** a consequence,mushrooms have developed a protective mechanism consisting of high concentrations of antioxidants such as selenium,polyphenols,β-glucans,ergothioneine,various vitamins and other bioactive *** mushrooms of the pleurotus genus have generated scientific interest due to their therapeutic properties,especially related to risk factors connected to the severity of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).In this report,we highlight the therapeutic properties of pleurotus mushrooms that may be associated with a reduction in the severity of COVID-19:antihypertensive,antihyperlipidemic,antiatherogenic,anticholesterolemic,antioxidant,anti-inflammatory and antihyperglycemic *** properties may interact significantly with risk factors for COVID-19 severity,and the therapeutic potential of these mushrooms for the treatment or prevention of this disease is *** this,studies show that regular consumption of pleurotus species mushrooms or components isolated from their tissues is beneficial for immune *** species mushrooms may have a role in the prevention or treatment of infectious diseases either as food supplements or as sources for pharmacological agents.
