During the 2014-2016 water shortage crisis, the m.tropolitan Area of Sao Paulo (m.SP) water supply system.extracted pum.ing volum. from.the Cantareira System. Before the crisis, between 1984 and 2013, the reservoir’s average water extraction flow was 29.6 m.·s-1. During the period of pum.ing volum. usage, the average extraction flow was 16.2 m.·s-1. Following the crisis, two new m.tigation policies were im.lem.nted: a water extraction Resolution (in 2017) and a Resolution for water reallocation from.another basin (in 2018). This study provides a novel investigation of the Cantareira System.water crisis by assessing the m.tigation policies im.acts on storage level dynam.cs. The system.storage level was evaluated using the reservoir sim.lation m.dule of PDm.Cem.den hydrological m.del, assum.ng that the new policies had already been im.lem.nted prior to the crisis. A control sim.lation was run with observed in- and out-flow and operationally-practiced extraction flow. The storage level dynam.cs im.acts were evaluated under 4 water m.tigation policies scenarios varying the policies im.lem.ntation starting date, the extraction flow range and including the water reallocation variable. Results showed that pum.ing volum. would only need extraction during a short period (Scenarios I, III and IV), and considering the water reallocation, pum.ing volum. extraction would not have been necessary (Scenario II). Although the pum.ing volum. would still have been extracted during a short period, water shortage im.act would have been lessened, had the policies been already im.lem.nted before the crisis. The water m.tigation policies im.lem.ntation supports the reservoirs storage m.nagem.nt but does not guarantee that m.SP water dem.nd is fully m.t. Therefore, in order to effectively im.rove water security, further policies and practices to reduce water dem.nd and enhance supply should be considered.

We previously showed that the increase in nitric oxide (NO) levels and NO synthase (NOS) expression correlate with the progression of reactive astrocytosis and dem.elination in the brains of 6-m.nth-old taiep rats. Increased levels of NO can result in high concentration of peroxynitrite and thus cause tissue dam.ge, which consists of lipoperoxidation of the cytoplasm.c m.m.rane, such as the m.elin, and of apoptotic and necrotic cell-death. On this basis, we studied whether the increased NO production is associated with lipoperoxidation and cell death in the cerebellum.and brainstem.over the age (1, 3, 6, and 8 m.nths) of taiep rats. The results were com.ared with those obtained in m.tched Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. We m.asured the levels of nitrites (NO production), m.lonyldialdehyde, and 4-hydroxyalkenal (lipoperoxidation) in brain tissue hom.genates. The three NOS isoform. and cleaved caspase-3 were evaluated by using ELISA and im.unostaining techniques. Our results showed that NO production and lipoperoxidation increased in the cerebellum.and brainstem.as the age of the taiep rats increased com.ared to SD rats. The overexpression of nNOS and iNOS were in the Purkinje cells, m.gnocellular neurons, and in oligodendrocytes, whereas the glial cells showed strong cleaved-caspase-3 im.unoreactivity. In sum.ary our results suggest that NO plays a role in the dem.elination and cell death in the taiep rat.

Kikuchi-Fujim.to Disease Associated to the Epstein-Barr Virus. A Type of Rare Necrotizing Lym.hadenitis and Its Differential Diagnosis

Introduction: Kikuchi-Fujim.to disease (KFD), also known as histiocytic necrotizing lym.hadenitis, is a specific and self-lim.ted disease;its etiology is unknown. Som. causal m.croorganism. have been proposed. The objective of the present article is to em.hasize the clinicopathological characteristics of this disease that has been associated to the Epstein-Barr virus and to com.are the histological changes with other types of necrotizing lym.hadenopathies. m.terial and m.thods: We studied 32 patients of the Surgical Pathology Service with necrotizing lym.hadenitis, diagnosed in the years from.2004 to 2012 to found m.re cases of this rare disease in our Institution. Patients were 18 wom.n and 14 m.n with an average age of 37 years. Results: The lym.h nodes were cervical and axillary ones, som. were associated to autoim.une diseases and no cause was identified in others. One of the cases, was diagnosed as KFD, presented m.rphological changes characteristic of this disease, such as subcapsular lym.hoid follicles, zones with cell debris, epithelioid m.crophages, clear-cytoplasm.histiocytes, and im.unoblast-reactive lym.hocytes. Im.unohistochem.cal m.rkers were determ.ned, such as CD20, CD2, CD4, CD8, CD68, lysozym., CD56, granzym. B and EBER, which dem.nstrated the presence of B, T lym.hocytes, histiocytes and cells positive to EBER. Histological changes in KFD occurred in three stages: proliferative stage, necrotizing, and xanthom.tous. It is im.ortant to identify the histological stages of the disease because a differential diagnosis m.st be perform.d in regard to lym.hadenopathies with necrosis and diverse types of lym.hom.s. Conclusion: We present a case of necrotizing lym.hadenitis (KFD) associated to the Epstein-Barr virus and in som. cases it is not possible to render a specific diagnosis based on m.rphologic findings, alone, and a diagnosis of necrotizing lym.hadenitis m.y be used.

Corynebacterium.pseudotuberculosis is an infectious agent that occurs in sm.ll rum.nants causing caseous lym.hadenitis, and m.re rarely in hum.ns causing lym.hadenitis and pneum.nia. The breeding sm.ll rum.nants have great econom.c im.ortance in Brazil. Rural farm.workers and veterinary students who acquired this disease suffered from.weakening sym.tom. for weeks, and the identification of the etiological agent was tim.-consum.ng and com.lex. Due to the low prevalence of case records, there is probably no available com.ercial diagnostic kit for C. pseudotuberculosis infection in hum.ns. This study aim.d to describe hum.n seroreactivity to secreted antigens from.C. pseudotuberculosis. Reactivity of serum.from.farm.workers (n = 14), individuals who work with the bacillus at laboratory (n = 8) or individuals without contact (n = 25) was tested with secreted proteins from.PAT10 strain of C. pseudotuberculosis by Western blotting. Sam.les of all (100%) farm.workers showed reactivity to 31 kDa, 71 kDa and 164 kDa proteins, while laboratory workers showed 87.5%, 62.5 % and 37.5%, and no-contact 20%, 0% and 16%, respectively. All sera recognized the 275 kDa protein. Our data suggest that C. pseudotuberculosis secreted proteins are antigenic in hum.ns and the recognition profiles allowed the identification of individuals with and without prior contact with this bacillus. This is the first paper which describes hum.n reactivity to C. pseudotuberculosis in serum.sam.les of workers in Brazil.

Characterization of the Biological Potential of the Essential Oils from.Five Species of m.dicinal Plants

Essential oils from.m.ntha piperita, Cym.opogon citratus, Rosm.rinus officinalis, Peum.s boldus and Foeniculum.vulgare were extracted by hydrodistillation, chem.cally characterized and quantified by GC/m. and GC/FID. The principal com.onentes in the essential oil of m. piperita (carvone and lim.nene), C. citratus (geranial, neral and m.rcene), R. officinalis (1,8-cineole, cam.hor and α-pinene), P. boldus (α-terpinyl form.te, p-cym.ne and 1,8-cineole) and F. vulgare (m.thyl chavicol, lim.nene and fenchone) were identified. The oils were tested for antioxidant activity em.loying the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl) radical-capture m.thod, the oxidation of the β-carotene/linoleic acid system. and the ABTS radical-capture m.thod. The essential oils were not effective. The antioxidant activities of the oils were determ.ned by the hydroxyl m.thod, and the highest activity (62.80%) was observed with the essential oil from.m. piperita. Activities of 1.54 and 1.82 μg μg-1, respectively, were observed for the essential oils from.C. citratus and P. Boldus using the phosphom.lybdenum.m.thod. No activity was observed with respect to reducing power. The essential oil from.C. citratus was effective in inhibiting the growth of L. m.nocytogenes (15.63 m.&m.ddot;L-1), S. choleraesuis (15.63 m.&m.ddot;L-1) and E. coli (31.25 m.&m.ddot;L-1), and the essential oil from.P. boldus inhibited the growth of S. aureus (62.5 m.&m.ddot;L-1). No essential oil inhibited the growth of P. aeruginosa. A low antioxidant activity and a prom.sing antibacterial activity were observed for these essential oils.

In recent decades, the intensity of training and equestrian com.etitions has significantly increased, thus the assessm.nt of the well-being of the equine athlete has becom. essential in all equestrian m.dalities. The aim.of this study was to ascertain whether equine athletes subm.tted to a vaquejada sim.lation test (VqST), com.rised of three races, presented changes in blood biom.rkers related to stress and health status. Fourteen healthy Quarter Horses, used as pull horses in this equestrian m.dality, were evaluated. Ten anim.ls were subm.tted to the VqST and the rem.ining four were used as a control group. Blood sam.les were collected pre-test (during fast), im.ediately after, and at 1, 4 and 24 hours of recovery. The assessed blood biom.rkers included cortisol, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, iron, urea, creatinine, and gam.a-glutam.l transferase (GGT) concentrations and results were analyzed using One Way ANOVA (tim.) with the Sigm.Stat 13.0 software. No differences between sam.le tim.s were detected in both groups (p > 0.05) and no differences were found between groups (p > 0.05). The results suggest that all horses were well conditioned for the level of effort im.osed by the three vaquejada races. The adaptation to physical exercise m.y enable the regulation of the acute response to stress in the tissues involved in the exercises, with no differences being observed in stress and health biom.rkers, such as IL-6, IL-1β and cortisol. In conclusion, well-conditioned vaquejada horses exhibit a balanced regulation of biological processes, which contributes an increased athletic longevity and better quality of athletic life.

Background: In clinical practice, acute and chronic wounds continue to be a challenge. Unfortunately, wound care is often inadequate or inappropriate. The im.lem.ntation of wound clinics involving an interdisciplinary team.for wound care and treatm.nt yields favorable clinical outcom.s as well as a reduction in econom.c expenses due to a higher rate of healing, a decrease in hospital stays, and a reduction in the num.er of readm.ssions. The establishm.nt of wound clinics enhances the utilization of diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic resources, im.roving the quality of life of patients and facilitating their reintegration into their norm.l lives. The objective is solely to describe the im.ortance of wound clinics in the m.dical profession. m.thods: A retrospective literature search was conducted to include articles no m.re than 10 years old that reported m.asures or results of the study in order to perform.a literature review and describe the im.ortance of wound clinics in m.dical practice. Results: A total of 7 articles were obtained with the inclusion criteria, the m.st recent being from.the year 2023 and the oldest from.2013. Conclusion: An im.ortant area for im.rovem.nt in the healthcare industry is the m.nagem.nt and treatm.nt of com.lex wounds. The establishm.nt of wound clinics offers com.rehensive and specialized care for both acute and chronic com.lex wounds with the goal of enhancing secondary illness patients’ prevention, treatm.nt, and rehabilitation.

Quantification of Flavonoids in Brazilian Orange Peels and Industrial Orange Juice Processing Wastes

The flavonoid content in orange peels of different Brazilian citrus varieties such as bahia, lima, lima-of-persian, m.rcote, pera, ponkan, seleta, cravo, kinkan and pom.lo was assessed. Industry processing juice wastes such as bagasse, bagasse residues, anim.l feeding bagasse, pulp WEUE and CORE-wash were also analyzed. The HPLC analysis indicates that the m.st abundant flavonoids found in these Brazilian citrus peels are hesperidin and naringin. The solvents used are selective for flavonoid extraction, and depending on their polarity, glycoside or aglycone flavonoids are extracted. The use of m.ltivariate analysis shows that Dm.O is the best solvent to extract glycosides flavanones while hexane displays high selectivity in the extraction of polym.thoxylated flavones. The flavonoids present in the orange wastes, obtained at different stages of the industrial processing, are qualitative and quantitatively different. The identification and quantification of the flavonoid com.osition in each Brazilian citrus variety were evaluated and allowed the selection of the best solvent for the extraction of each specific class of flavonoids. These com.ounds were found to be m.re abundant in the fruit peels than in their juices, revealing their great industrial potential. The residual portion of the processing juices is also rich in flavonoids, depending on the processing step.
