Assessment of nutrients and conductivity in the Wachusett Reservoir watershed:An investigation of land use contributions and trends

The quality of drinking water for the Boston Metropolitan Area,supplied by the Quabbin-Wachusett system,is impacted by environmental *** objectives of this study are to increase understanding of the role that small streams may play in degradation of reservoir quality by characterizing seasonal constituent patterns from 1998 to 2020 in the Wachusett Reservoir watershed and by developing enhanced modeling *** monitoring(1998–2012)exhibited increased loads due to increasing flows despite declining solute *** present study analyzed seasonal nitrate(NO3)and total phosphorus(TP)concentration and load trends from 2012 to 2020 across 11 *** conductivity(SC)was also assessed to evaluate the impacts of road salt *** 2012 to 2020,statistical results for mean nutrient concentrations suggest static or declining temporal trends,while SC in all tributaries exhibited increasing *** use data suggest association with altered drainage landscapes as potential sources of increased constituent *** with the highest concentrations of TP,NO3,and SC have the largest percentage of impervious and cultivated areas,two to three times greater than other *** flows were modeled using the airGR hydrological model,subsequently used to calculate ***,flow magnitude was a more important load driver than long-term nutrient concentrations,thus,showing that stream discharge controlled load *** the other hand,persistently high SC levels controlled the increasing SC load ***,many nutrient reduction management strategies demonstrated an important impact from 1998 to *** watershed programs aimed at reducing salt applications,concentrations in streams are increasing,indicating a long-term legacy of salt *** smaller tributaries represent a modest portion of the system,addressing these sources has the potential to further reduce the long-term ecological

AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS), obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a group of Mexican Mestizo patients with cryptogenic cirrhosis (CC) and to compare this group with patients with cirrhosis secondary to other causes (disease controls). METHODS: Patients with CC, diagnosed between January, 1990 and April, 2005, were included in a retrospective study. Patients with cirrhosis caused by chronic hepatitis C, alcohol abuse or autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) served as disease controls. RESULTS: A total of 134 patients with CC were analyzed. Disease controls consisted of 81 patients with chronic hepatitis C, 33 with alcohol abuse and 20 with AIH. The median age of patients with CC was 57 years (range, 16-87); 83 (61.9%) patients were female; 53 (39.6%) were Child A, 65 (48.5%) Child B, and 16 (11.9%) were Child C cirrhosis. The prevalence of MS (29.1% vs 6%; P < 0.001), obesity (16.4% vs 8.2%; P = 0.04) and T2DM (40% vs 22.4%; P = 0.013) was higher in CC patients than in disease controls. There were no differences in sex, age or liver function tests between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of MS, obesityand T2DM were higher in patients with CC than in patients with cirrhosis secondary to others causes. Our findings support the hypothesis that non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) plays an under-recognized role in CC.

The main objective of accelerated life tests in this setting is the recovery of the distribution of the random variable representing lifetime which is difficult to observe at a certain level of a given stress factor. A general model for accelerated life test is proposed that utilizes the inverse problem approach, that is, the variable is observe at different level/s and the transfer function is used to recover the elusive random variable (life time). The problem then is reduced to finding the transfer function. We derive some properties of the proposed general model. The Lognormal distribution and the Arrhenius model for lifetime are used as examples. Its relationship with the Cox proportional hazards model is also discussed.
