Modeling and Simulation of the Autocatalytic Kinetics of Haemoglobin SS Polymerization: Onset of Polymerization

We report a fresh and simpler approach to the modelling of the kinetics of the polymerization of Hb SS in sickle cell patients that couples the kinetics and the hydrodynamics of blood flow in mechanistic understanding of the process. The well-known two-step autocatalytic reaction scheme was used for the polymerization reaction with the assumption of simpler first-order reaction scheme for each stage. In addition, the forces acting on a particle in motion were also introduced to account for compelling settling of the red cells that lead to vessel occlusion (vaso-occlusion). A first attempt on the prediction of vessel blockage was made using this novel model. The time for the onset of the polymerization reaction was derived from hydrodynamic considerations and kinetics while the kinetic rate constants were obtained from the autocatalytic nature of the reaction. Experimental data for model validation were obtained from recruited SS patients and in vitro data of Hofrichter. Over 100 volunteers were recruited for participation in this work but less than 40% met the inclusion criteria. Participants were of age range 13 - 43 (with a mean of 26 ± 8 years) for SCD patients and 18 - 43 (with a mean of 28 ± 7 years) for control participants. Blood indices and Transcranial Doppler (TCD) test parameters of all participants were the principal parameters used for model validation. Constant k2/k1 ratios was obtained for individual in vivo/in vitro system. This ratio is unique for any individual, independent on protein sequence and also suggests the degree of expression of the symptoms of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) with higher values reflecting greater propensity to pain crisis. Delay time, tD, was found to have an inverse relationship with the kinetic constant for the residual reaction, k1. Difference in grading parameters in architectural schools and its impact on the competency rating of future professionals

Architectural education in Nigeria is divided into at wo-tier training system of four and two years for undergraduate and postgraduate study, respectively. After the completion of postgraduate study, a student is deemed competent to take the professional practice examination. Success in this examination qualifies a student to be registered as an architect. The competency rating of future professionals in architectural schools in Nigeria is determined through a jury system of scoring based on predetermined grading parameters. However, the grading parameters adopted by assessing authorities （academic professors and practitioners representing the professional body） differ. The difference in the grading parameters employed by the two approved assessing authorities in Nigeria was investigated in this study. Covenant University in Nigeria was used as a case study. The grading parameters and scores for the 2013 academic session were compared to determine similarities and differences, which might have affected the competency rating of students. Descriptive statistics was employed to analyze the data obtained. Results showed a significant difference in scoring by the two authorities. This difference had a significant consequence on the competency rating of students.

以智能手机为代表的移动互联网应用已经在我国广泛普及,智能手机中的移动定位、地图导航等功能给交通出行带来了巨大的便利。然而,智能手机的应用也对交通系统运行带来了巨大的影响。本论文主要针对信号交叉口驾驶员及行人手机使用对通行效率与交通安全问题的影响开展研究。选择杭州市典型信号交叉口作为研究对象,分别从红灯期间驾驶员使用手机对交叉口启动损失时间、车头时距和饱和流量的影响,以及行人过街期间手机使用及其安全性分析这两个角度开展本论文的研究。论文主要研究内容如下:（1）信号交叉口红灯期间驾驶员手机使用行为调查。论文设计了两种调查方案:问卷调查和实际调查。问卷调查采用在线问卷形式,包括27个问题,这些问题涉及机动车红灯等待期间移动设备的使用情况,问卷有效样本数量为151份。同时采用视频采集方式获取了五个信号交叉口的机动车红灯等待期间的视频数据,通过人工判断获取了2596辆机动车的行为数据样本,通过这些数据对机动车红灯期间手机使用行为进行分析和建模。（2）驾驶员红灯期间手机使用行为的影响因素分析。根据实际调查的数据,分析了影响驾驶员在红灯期间使用手机的重要因素。提出了一种更加鲁棒有效的分析方法,即非支配排序遗传算法（NSGA-Ⅱ）和logistic回归的融合分析。结果显示,车辆类型、车内存在乘客、红灯等待时间和驾驶员年龄是影响红灯期间驾驶员手机使用的前四个主要因素。（3）手机使用对交叉口运行效率的影响分析。通过分析红灯排队期间前三辆车的运行行为与手机使用之间的关系,分别对比了是否使用手机对驾驶员反应时间（启动损失时间）、车头时距、饱和流率的定量影响,进而得到红灯期间手机使用对交叉口运行效率的影响。（4）行人过街行为特性的评估性能指标。本部主要论述了行人过街基本性能指标的概念和测量方法,包括行人过街距离、过街时间、停止时间、行走时间、过街速度、启动时间、过街启动延误等。在此基础上,提出了行人过街安全性能指标的概念和测量方法,包括行人始发目的地（0D）和轨迹差、冲突避免率和眼神交流率等指标。（5）手机使用对行人过街行为安全性的影响分析。对杭州市信号交叉口 4个行人横道进行了实地调查。通过数据分析,研究了不同类型手机使用、有无中央安全岛等因素对行人过街安全性的影响。

Transesterification of castor oil:neuro‑fuzzy modelling,uncertainty quantification and optimization study

This study conducted experiments used for the development of both the regression model with uncertainty analysis and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system(ANFIS)model for the prediction of the yield of biodiesel(YB)produced from castor oil in the presence of calcium oxide derived from the *** Behnken design(BBD)was used to develop the experimental condition for five different variables while YB was the *** analysis was determined from Monte Carlo simulation(MCS).The model was optimized and validated before the generated data was applied in the three ANFIS modelling *** mean square error(RMSE),coefficient of correlation(R^(2))and average percentage error(APE)were used to determine the accuracy of the models *** result of this modelling shows that the optimum YB(94.29%)was achieved at a methanol to oil ratio of 11.48,catalyst loading of 3.38 wt%,reaction time of 1.84 h,the temperature of 60.2℃,and agitation of 343.5 *** prediction from BBD,ANFIS and MCS agreed that the methanol to oil ratio was the most important parameter for *** considered ANFIS model technique(subtractive clustering)for the modelling of YB outperformed BBD *** novelty of this study are the determination of the optimum condition for the transesterification of castor oil in the presence of thermally treated anthill,the establishment of the use of ANFIS in modelling YB,the prediction of the influence of variables on YB using both statistical and,AI techniques and validation of the predictions from the two methods using MCS.

Polyphenol Oxidase Activity and Inhibition in White Yam （Dioscorea Rotundata. Var. Laasirin） Chips as African Fries for Human Consumption

Polyphenol oxidase, a bi-functional enzyme, has been implicated in enzymatic browning of yam and other tubers in a negative way. The objective of this present study was to examine the activity of polyphenol oxidase in Dioscorea rotundata. Var. laasirin and the efficiency of heat and chemical treatments in inhibiting this enzyme. Crude Polyphenol Oxidase （PPO） of Dioscorea ***. Laasirin was isolated and the kinetics studied using the lineweaver-burk plot. The activity of the enzyme was evaluated using spectrophotomeric method. Yam PPO catalyzes oxidation of various substrates with catechol being the most readily oxidized substrate. The Michaelis-Menten constant （Km） and maximum reaction velocity （Vmax） for yam PPO were 0.00037 and 0.3125 respectively. Inhibition data showed that the enzyme had least activity （71.70） when blanched at 95℃ for 7 mins with chemical treatment involving a combination of 0.5% Sodium metabisulphite （Food grade） and 0.5% Ascorbic acid （Food grade）. The activity was highest （83.02） when it was blanched at 95 ℃ for 7 rains. This study has shown that it is possible to inhibit polyphenol oxidase activity in white yam using the chemical pretreatments and processing conditions described in this study for possible adoption in the production of packaged frozen yam chips by food industries.
