Background Echocardiography has been shown to be a valuable resource in the diagnosis of many cardiac conditions, and can be used in all age groups, from the fetus to the oldest old. In the context of an increasingly aging population, the impact and utility of echocar- diography in centenarians is largely unknown. This study is to determine whether echocardiography in centenarians aids in making clinical patient management decisions. Methods A retrospective review of echocardiograms from 1986 to 2014, at two affiliated tertiary centers, in individuals who were 100 years or older at the time of the examination. Patient and echocardiogram characteristics, management decisions based on echocardiography, and mortality were documented. Results 114 centenarians had echocardiograms, with ages ranging from 100 to 107 years （101 - 1.4 years）. In 82 of the centenarians evaluated （72%）, no changes in management occurred as a consequence of the echocardiogram. From all management changes directly related to the echocardiogram, 81% （n = 26） of these corresponded to medication adjustments; interventional or surgical procedures followed the echocardiogram only in 4% （n = 5） of the total number of centenarians. Echocardiogram-based changes in management were only significant in patients that were referred for congestive heart failure （P = 0.02）. After the echocardiogram was performed, 1-month and 1-year mortality were 15% and 47%, respectively. The median survival after the echocardiogram was obtained was 13 months （range 0.03 to 145 months）, with no difference if there was a change or no change in manage- ment （P = 0.21）. Conclusions Among centenarians undergoing echocardiography, despite additional diagnostic information, echocardio- grams in centenarians influence management in a minority of cases, most commonly in the form of medication changes for treatment of heart failure. Two full-scale experiments using controlled blasting were conducted in the Port of Tokachi on Hokkaido Island, Japan,to assess the behavior of piles and pipelines subjected to lateral *** specimens were extensively instrumented with strain gauges to measure the distribution of moment during lateral *** allowed us to compute the loading condition,as well as to conduct damage and performance assessments on the piles and *** paper presents the test results and discussions on the response of single piles and pipelines observed from the full-scale *** on the test results,it can be concluded that using controlled blasting successfully liquefied the soil,and subsequently induced lateral *** movements of the single pile,as well as the transverse pipelines,were approximately the same as the free field soil *** moment distribution of the single pile indicated that global translation of the liquefied soil layer provided insignificant force to the *** addition,the degree of fixity at the pile tip significantly affected the moment along the pile as well as the pile head *** pile with a higher degree of fixity at the pile tip had smaller pile head displacement but larger maximum moment.

There is a need to develop safe and effective downstream passage for diadromous anguillid eels on large rivers,where the combination of physical screening and bypass structures that is used to protect eel on smaller rivers is *** Eel Passage Research Center was established in 2013 to address the challenge of providing safe passage for out-migrating silver-stage American eel(Anguilla rostrata)on the *** River,the outflow of the laurentian Great lakes,which is spanned by two large,mainstem hydroelectric generating *** Center’s goal is to develop the technology to behaviorally guide eel to a collection point for capture and transfer around the two generating *** achieve this goal,three parallel initiatives were undertaken;1)research into behavioral guidance techniques suitable for guiding out-migrating eel on large,high flow rivers,2)the evaluation of sonar technologies for detection of eel,necessary for assessing in situ guidance,and 3)the commissioning of literature reviews for the most promising guidance technologies.A number of behavioral guidance stimuli,including electricity,flow,sound and electromagnetic fields were examined in laboratory and flume settings for their utility in guiding out-migrating silver-stage *** the techniques examined,only sound showed any promise for *** sonar technologies(Simrad 120 kHz EK60 echosounder,Sound Metrics ARIS Explorer 1800 sonar,and the Kongsberg Mesotech 500 kHz M3 multi-mode multibeam sonar)were evaluated to determine if existing acoustic technologies could be used to estimate the relative abundance and distribution of out-migrating silver-phase American eel in the *** *** the ARIS unit could successfully identify eel targets,and only over a short(lated over a portion of a single outmigration season contributed to the successful development of machine learning tools to automate the identification of American e
