Objective:To inves.igate the effect of s.oking and depres.ion on hos.ital cos.s.for lung cancer(LC).Methods.We extracted data on depres.ion,s.oking his.ory,demographics.and hos.ital charges.for patients.with res.iratory cancers.ICD-9 codes.161-163,165)from the 2008 Tennes.ee Hos.ital Dis.harge Data *** s.mple(n=6665)was.mos.ly white(86%)and male(57%).Age-adjus.ed rates.were developed in accordance with Centers.for Dis.as. Control and Prevention methods.and hos.ital cos.s.were compared for patients.with LC with vers.s.without depres.ion and a s.oking ***:Three findings.Ps.higher among blacks.than among whites.and higher among men than among women;(2)while 66%of LC patients.s.oked(more men than women without racial variation),24%had depres.ion(more females.and whites.were depres.ed);(3)the LC hos.ital cos. was.54%higher than the non-LC hos.ital cos.,and this.cos. doubled for patients.with LC with depres.ion and s.oking vers.s.thos. without s.ch ***:While LC is.more prevalent among blacks.and men,depres.ion is.higher among female and white *** depres.ion with higher cos.s.exis.ed among LC patients.our find-ings.point to(1)the pos.ibility of cos. s.vings.by diagnos.ng and treating depres.ion among LC patients.and(2)implementation of proven s.oking ces.ation programs.to reduce LC morbidity and hos.ital cos.s.

Objective:Depres.ion and anxiety are frequently obs.rved in heart failure(HF)patients.however,the effect of s.ch factors.on hos.italization cos.s.of HF patients.and whether s.ch cos.s.vary by race and gender remain poorly *** analys.s.delineated the preva-lence of depres.ion/anxiety among HF patients.and es.imated the effect of race and gender on hos.italization ***:We examined the 2008 files.of the Tennes.ee Hos.ital Dis.harge Data s.s.em(HDDs.on patients.≥20 years.of age)with a primary diagnos.s.of HF(ICD-9 codes.402,404,and 428)along with demographic data,depres.ion/anxiety diagnos.s.hos.ital cos.s.and *** the HF s.mple(n=16,889)53%were female and 23%were *** and gender differences.in hos.ital cos.s.were evaluated for the following three groups.(1)HF patients.with depres.ion/anxiety(HF+D);(2)HF-only patients.without depres.ion/anxiety(HFO);and(3)HF patients.with other mental diagnos.s.HF+M).Res.lts.HF was.s.gnificantly(ps.compared to whites.and higher among males.than *** 25%of HF patients.had depres.ion/anxiety(more whites.and females.were depres.ed).HF patients.averaged more than 3 comorbidities.blacks.had a greater number of comorbidities.and hos.italization cos. for the year).Cos.s.were higher among HF+D patients.compared to HFO *** HF+D patients.cos.s.were higher for black males.compared with white *** cos. patterns.prevailed largely becaus. of higher comorbidities.that required more re-admis.ions.and longer hos.ital ***:Race and depres.ion/anxiety are as.ociated with increas.d hos.italization cos.s.of HF *** higher cos.s.among blacks.reflect the higher burden of comorbidities.s.ch as.hypertens.on and diabetes.which calls.for wides.read dis.emination,adoption,and implementation of proven interventions.for the control of thes. comorbidities.
