Citric acid cross-linked curcumin/chitosan/chickpea flour film: An active packaging for chicken breast storage

Since there has been an increasing interest in natural, non-toxic, and biodegradable food packages instead of plastic ones, scientists put great effort into eliminating the potential drawbacks of these biodegradable films. In this study, citric acid (CA) was utilized as a crosslinker for the films produced by chitosan (CS), chickpea flour (CF), and active agent curcumin (CUR) by a solvent casting technique. CA was introduced into the film formulations at different concentrations (0, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% w/v), and the influence on the functional film characteristics were extensively *** CA concentration in formulation caused a reduction in water vapor permeability (WVP) of the films such that the film with the highest CA concentration (1.5-CUR/CF/CS) was 62.6% more resistant to water vapor than film without CA (0-CUR/CF/CS). When CA concentration in the film formulation was increased, elongation at break (EAB) value increased from 1.64% ± 0.13%, to 11.1%± 1.21% whereas tensile strength (TS) value decreased from 7.83± 0.08 MPa to 3.58± 0.20 MPa. Contrary to expectations, antioxidant activity of the films decreased with increasing CA concentration. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns of the films proved the amorphous nature and inhibitory characteristic of CA against retrogradation. In addition to all these, CA concentration significantly influenced Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) pattern of the films with the increasing number of degradation stages. Besides the cross-linker characteristic of CA, it also extensively enhanced the antibacterial characteristic of the films. Films formulated with 1.5% (w/v) CA (1.5-CUR/CF/CS) showed antibacterial effect against both Escherichia coli (***) (ATCC 11229) and Staphylococcus aureus (***) (ATCC 43300). Finally, chicken breast packed with 1.5-CUR/CF/CS films remained below unacceptable microbial threshold limits even at the end of the 9th -day of storage compared to samples packaged with the film with no antibacte

Two-Dimensional Electrophoretic Analysis of Soluble Leaf Proteins of a Salt-sensitive （Triticum aestivum） and a Salt-tolerant （T. durum） Cultivar in Response to NaCI Stress

In this research, 3-day-old etiolated wheat seedlings of Triticum aestivum L. cv. Ceyhan-99 （salt-sensitive） and T. durum Desf. cv. Firat-93 （salt-tolerant） were grown in control and salt （150 mmol/L NaCl） treatments at a 15/25℃ temperature regime in the light for 12 days. Soluble proteins extracted from the first leaf tissues of two cultivars were analyzed by twodimensional （2-D） electrophoresis in order to detect NaCl-induced changes. The soluble leaf protein profiles of cultivars were observed to be similar. However, quantitative differences in 74 proteins were detected in the salt treatment group, compared to the control. Among the 74 protein spots, 14 were common for two cultivars. As a result of NaCl treatment, two low-molecular-weight （LMW） proteins （28.9 and 30.0 kDa） and one intermediate-molecular-weight （IMW） protein （44.3 kDa） in cv. Ceyhan-99 and six LMW proteins （18.6, 19.4, 25.7, 25.9, 26 and 27.6 kDa） in cv. Firat-93 were newly synthesized. The newly synthesized proteins were specific to each cultivar. In the Firat-93 cultivar, four proteins with LMW （24.8-27.9 kDa） were completely lost in NaCl treatment. Moreover, these four protein spots were not observed in both protein profiles of cv. Ceyhan-99. Most of these proteins were in acidic character （pl 〈6.0-6.9） and low molecular weight （〈31.6 kDa）. It is suggested that the newly synthesized or completely lost LMW proteins may be important for cultivars differing in sensitivity towards NaCl.

Saturation effect of up-conversion luminescence from erbium-doped,silicatitania sol-gel powders

The intensity of the visible up-conversion luminescence could be limited by a saturation effect produced by increased pump power. Visible up-conversion luminescence was obtained in erbium doped,silica-titania sol gel powders under dynamical pumping at 1532 nm. The saturation effect was studied for erbium radiative transitions 2H9/2→4I15/2 （410 nm）,2H11/2→4I15/2 （530 nm）,4S3/2→4I15/2 （550 nm）,2H9/2→4I13/2 （567 nm） and 4F9/2→4I15/2 （675 nm）. The recorded up-conversion luminescence decreased when increasing excitation power. The results suggested that the saturation effect was determined by the pump power,the sample composition and the lifetimes of the corresponding first excited states.

Ionizing radiation （IR） is a potential carcinogen. Evidence for the carcinogenic effect of IR radiation has been shown after long-term animal investigations and observations on survivors of the atom bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However, IR has been widely used in a controlled manner in the medical imaging for diagnosis and monitoring of various diseases and also in cancer therapy. The collective radiation dose from medical imagings has increased six times in the last two decades, and grow continuously day to day. A large number of evidence has revealed the increased cancer risk in the people who had frequently exposed to x-rays, especially in childhood. It has also been shown that secondary malignancy may develop within the five years in cancer survivors who have received radiotherapv, because of IR-mediated damage to healthy cells. In this article, we review the current knowledge about the role of medical x-ray exposure in cancer development in humans, and recently recognized epigenetic mechanisms in IR-induced carcinogenesis.
