Agreements’profile of Scheimpflug-based optical biometer with gold standard partial coherence interferometry

AIM:To determine the agreement of ocular biometric indices including axial length,keratometric readings,anterior chamber depth,and horizontal corneal diameter between the Pentacam AXL and IOL Master ***:The study was a large cross-sectional population-based study(Tehran Geriatric Eye Study)conducted from Jan 2019 to Jan 2020.A total of 160 clusters were randomly selected proportional to size(each cluster contained 20 individuals)from 22 strata of Tehran *** people aged 60y and above were invited to participate in the *** all participants,preliminary ocular examinations were performed including the measurement of uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity,objective and subjective refraction,anterior and posterior segment *** participants underwent an ocular biometry using the Pentacam AXL and IOL Master ***:The 95%limits of agreement(LoA)between the two devices were-0.13 to 0.19,-0.15 to 0.17,and-0.13 to 0.19 in normal,pseudophakic,and cataractous eyes,*** increasing the axial length,the difference between the two devices significantly increased in all three groups of normal,pseudophakic,and cataractous eyes(P<0.001).The 95% LoAs between the two devices regarding the mean keratometry shows that the best LoAs were seen in cataractous(-0.33 to 0.81)and followed by normal eyes(-0.36 to 0.86)and the pseudophakic eyes(-0.48 to 0.90)had the widest *** 95% LoAs for horizontal corneal diameter measurements were-0.08 to 0.86,-0.03 to 0.83,and-0.07 to 0.87 in normal,pseudophakic,and cataractous eyes,*** 95% LoAs of anterior chamber depth measurements between the two devices was-0.39 to 0.19 and-0.37 to 0.13 in normal eyes and cataractous,***:The Pentacam AXL has excellent agreement with the gold standard,IOL Master 500 in measuring axial *** eyes with cataracts,the difference between the two devices is more *** the increasing of axial length,the difference between the

How long does the recovery of corneal sensitivity in different corneal regions take after LASEK?

AIM:To determine the corneal sensitivity recovery period after laser-assisted sub-epithelial keratectomy(LASEK)refractive surgery and investigate the effects of ablation depth on ***:In this study examinations were performed on 90 right eyes of 90 people(34 males and 56 females)with an age range of 20-35 and an average of 22.26±3.8 years old.A sensation of 5 corneal regions,including the center and 4 mid-peripheral regions,i.e.,nasal,inferior,temporal,and superior,each at a distance of 2 mm from the center of the cornea were measured with a Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer device in 3-time points including before LASEK,1 and 3mo after the surgery,*** was performed on individuals with stabilized myopia of -1.00 to -7.00 diopters and astigmatism of less than 2.00 ***,the individuals were divided into three groups regarding ablation ***:The highest level of corneal sensitivity before surgery was related to the center of the cornea(59.1±7.76),and the highest level of corneal sensitivity loss was also related to this *** sensation of all measured corneal regions significantly reduced 1mo postoperatively and returned to their preoperative levels 3mo after surgery(mean of 5 corneal regions in levels of preoperation:58.2±6.48,1mo postoperation:57.3±5.84,3mo postoperation:58.2±5.49;P<0.05).A significant relationship was found between ablation depth and corneal sensitivity changes in the center and temporal regions(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Corneal sensitivity in myopia and low astigmatism decreases after LASEK and reaches the preoperative level within *** depth of ablation during surgery affected the recovery of corneal sensitivity.

Comparison of anterior segment parameters of the eye between type 2 diabetic with and without diabetic retinopathy and non-diabetic

AIM:To compare anterior segment parameters between two groups of type 2 diabetic with and without diabetic retinopathy(DR)and non-diabetic elderly subjects based on hemoglobin A1c(Hb A1c)levels and status of ***:This study was conducted on 997 residents aged 60y or over in Tehran,*** group had Hb A1c level≥6.4%with no other systemic *** non-diabetic participants had normal eye findings and no systemic diseases.K1,K2,mean K,Q-value,anterior,central,posterior,and total corneal densitometric findings,anterior chamber volume(ACV),anterior chamber depth(ACD),corneal volume(CV),and pachymetry were measured by Pentacam ***:A total of 678 non-diabetic(39%male)and 319 diabetic(35%male)subjects with mean age of 66.31±5.23 and 67.22±4.96y were examined,*** statistically significant difference was found in anterior segment parameters between non-diabetic and diabetic groups(all P>0.05).However,middle,posterior,and total corneal densitometric values were statistically different between two groups af ter controlling the ef fects of confounders(P=0.014,0.007,and 0.042,respectively).Corneal densitometric values in all layers,ACD,and ACV were different between diabetic subjects with and without DR(all P<0.05).In the diabetic group,only corneal densitometric values had a negative relationship with fasting blood sugar(P<0.001).ACD and ACV had a negative correlation with Hb A1c levels(all P<0.05,r=-0.129 and-0.146,respectively).However,the relationships were not observed after controlling the confounders(P=0.938,0.466,respectively).CONCLUSION:Considering the higher densitometric values of the cornea and lower ACD and ACV in diabetic subjects with DR,it is suggested that the examiners should perform comprehensive retinal examinations when faced with such conditions.

Subclinical inflammatory response after accelerated corneal cross-linking

Background:To evaluate the inflammatory response after accelerated collagen cross-linking(CXL)in eyes with ***:Consecutive eyes with keratoconus undergoing CXL surgery were included in this nonrandomized interventional *** flare was measured pre-and post-operatively with a laser flare photometer at 1 week,1,3 and 6 months after ***:Sixty eyes of 60 patients were entered into the *** CXL,the mean flare value was4.5 photons per millisecond(ph/ms).The flare values observed at week 1(7.1 ph/ms;P=0.008),month 1(6.5 ph/ms;P=0.04),month 3(6.7 ph/ms;P=0.004)and month 6(6.7 ph/ms;P=0.004)were significantly higher compared to *** values were not significantly different from week 1 up to 6 months after CXL(P=0.930).No statistically significant correlation was detected between the amount of inflammation and keratometric ***:Accelerated CXL in patients with keratoconus may cause a subclinical inflammatory response which is evident as slight but rather long-lasting rise of aqueous flare.

Corneal biomechanics after rigid gas permeable contact lens wear in keratoconus eyes

Background:Evaluation of corneal biomechanical properties 3 months after using rigid gas permeable(RGP)contact lenses in ***:In this prospective trial study,cases were 32 keratoconic eyes with no history of RGP lens *** eyes were examined with the Ocular Response Analyzer(ORA)and the Corneal Visualization Scheimpflug Technology(CORVIS-ST)to measure corneal hysteresis(CH),corneal resistance factor(CRF),deformation amplitude(DA),applanation velocity(AV)1 and 2,applanation length(AL)1 and 2,and peak distance before and 3 months after fitting aspheric RGP *** effect of the correlation between contralateral eyes and maximum keratometry were controlled for in the *** were compared using repeated measures analysis of ***:At 3 months,neither the increases in mean CH(0.14±2.77 mm Hg,P=0.789),CRF(0.41±4.35 mm Hg,P=0.612),AV1(0.03±0.17 m/s,P=0.301),AV2(0.11±0.59 m/s,P=0.299),AL1(0.44±1.56 m/s,P=0.118),AL2(1.16±5.06 m/s,P=0.211),and peak distance(0.19±1.29 m/s,P=0.409),nor the decrease in mean DA(0.03±0.17 mm,P=0.402)was statistically ***:Results in our series of patients indicated that 3 months of RGP lens wear had no significant impact on corneal biomechanics,and perhaps non progression of ***,RGP lenses can be regarded safe and appropriate in keratoconic patients.

Assessing the Effect of Colored Filters on Glare Sensitivity of Post Refractive Surgery Patients

Purpose:The use of colored filters is one recommended way for patients to reduce glare..This study assessed the effect of colored filters for reducing glare symptoms in post refractive surgery ***:.Log MAR visual acuity was determined in 70 participants.(140 eyes).who had undergone PRK refractive surgery using three colored filters(Yellow,Green,and Red)in different light ***:.Measured visual acuity was significantly reduced with red and green filters in glare and nonglare conditions when compared to its measurement without a *** asymmetrical light condition also revealed a significant difference in the visual acuity of the right and left eye when compared to each ***,no significant differences were observed for the yellow filter in either the measured visual acuity of each eye in both light conditions or of the right and left eyes compared to each ***:Red and green filters are poor choices for reducing glare in post refractive surgery patients but a yellow filter could be used to decrease glare and improve acuity.

Relationship between Corneal Thickness,Corneal Curvature,and Intraocular Pressure before and after Laser Treatment for Simple Myopia

Purpose:.To determine the relationship of central corneal thickness(CCT), curvature(CC), and intraocular pressure(IOP) as determinative factors for corneal biomechanics and in refractive ***:.The study investigated 48 eyes from subjects who visited the Excimer Laser Surgery Clinic at the Department of Ophthalmology. The refractive error, IOP, CCT, and CC were measured in all participants. After 3 months, all examinations were ***:.Linear regression demonstrated a significant positive relationship between pre- and postoperative CCT,.CC,.and IOP values..The IOP showed a significant correlation with CCT(P=0.033) for pre-PRK, but no significant relationship was seen post-PRK. The CCT also correlated significantly with CC both pre- and post-PRK(P<0.05).Conclusion:.The IOP was significantly correlated with CCT before PRK, but its behavior differed after surgery. Nearly the same correlation was seen between CCT and CC before and after the PRK;.nevertheless,.IOP measurements should be calculated or estimated more precisely after PRK based on CCT corrections.
