The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of relationship and association amongst morphological characters of groundnut as an important food crop in Nigeria. 118 cultivars were planted in a completely randomized design structure. Characterization was based on qualitative and quantitative evaluations of 62 characters. Data were analysed on the SPSS software (20.0 versions). Correlation tools were applied using Spearman, Kendall and Pearson methods. Level of relationship was determined based on the strength of coefficients R. Dependence among traits was tested using the Chi square. Multiple regression analysis was carried out in a predictive model. As a result, many of the traits are very weakly correlated. Day to emergence has no effect on Day to 50% flowering (R = 0.237, p 0.6, p < 0.9) were observed amongst pod and seed parameters. Pod sizes significantly affect the number of seeds present (R = 0.551, p 2 of 30%. Qualitative traits have no effect on each other as all coefficients are very low. Pod constriction and sizes have no relationship (R = -0.029). Tolerance to diseases is not affected by any qualitative trait. Also, no trait determines seed colour. Angiotensin(Ang)-(1–7) is an important biologically-active peptide of the renin-angiotensin system. This study was designed to determine whether inhibition of Ang-(1–7) in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus(PVN) attenuates sympathetic activity and elevates blood pressure by modulating pro-inflammatory cytokines(PICs)and oxidative stress in the PVN in salt-induced hypertension. Rats were fed either a high-salt(8% NaCl) or a normal salt diet(0.3% NaCl) for 10 weeks, followed by bilateral microinjections of the Ang-(1–7) antagonist A-779 or vehicle into the PVN. We found that the mean arterial pressure(MAP), renal sympathetic nerve activity(RSNA), and plasma norepinephrine(NE) were significantly increased in salt-induced hypertensive rats. The high-salt diet also resulted in higher levels of the PICs interleukin-6, interleukin-1 beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and monocyte chemotactic protein-1, as well as higher gp91 phoxexpression and superoxide production in the PVN. Microinjection of A-779(3 nmol/50 nL) into the bilateral PVN of hypertensive rats not only attenuated MAP, RSNA, and NE, but also decreased the PICs and oxidative stress in the PVN. These results suggest that the increased MAP and sympathetic activity in salt-induced hypertension can be suppressed by blockade of endogenous Ang-(1–7) in the PVN, through modulation of PICs and oxidative stress.

Performance Evaluation of Dry Season Okra under Sawdust and Trash Mulch Cover Treatments in Southwestern Nigeria

This paper reports the experimental investigation of the agronomic performance of okra under various quantities of both sawdust and trash mulches. The location of the field was the research farmland of the Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti Nigeria;Lat 6?N and Long 16?E. The experimental design used was complete randomized design with 6 treatments on both specimens. The experiments were repeated the following year on the same plot but with transposed plot allocation. Soil moisture loss from uncovered plot was with the highest value dropping to less than 2 per cent. It was followed by that of trash plot and the lowest loss was on sawdust mulched plot. The number of leave formed by okra on sawdust, trash and no mulch plots was 43, 36 and 27 respectively while maximum girth diameter was 37 mm in both trash and sawdust covered plots but okra plant on control plot attained only 26 mm diameter. Fruit yield were almost similar to trash and sawdust mulched okra having 7.5 and 7.6 Tonnes/Ha respectively while control plot recorded 5.2 Tonnes/Ha. The ash content of dry matter of sawdust, trash and no mulched plants was 0.25, 0.20 and 0.17 kg respectively. It was concluded that sawdust could perform as much as the traditional trash materials commonly used in Southwestern Nigeria. Also, sawdust was a good material for conserving soil moisture.

The experimental study carried out in this work contributes to the physico-mechanical characterization of the palm kernel shells (PKS) Elaeis guineensis of the DURA and TENERA varieties. The knowledge of these properties gives an idea of their behaviour in the realization of composites and others. The absolute density was determined by the method of pycnometer, the porosity and compactness of PKS too;respectively 1428.81 kg/m3 for Dura, 1395.81 kg/m3 for Tenera;0.041 for Dura, 0.158 for Tenera;0.958 for Dura, 0.841 for Tenera. The impact energy of PKS by the pendulum sheep method has an average value of 2.066 J/cm2 and 1.894 J/cm2 for Dura and Tenera respectively at a temperature of 26°C. The longitudinal Young’s modulus of 19 GPa and 17.9 GPa for Dura and Tenera, respectively, was determined by applying the Castigliano theorem through a three-point bending test device.

Design Intervention: An Artistic Strategy (A Strategy) to Minimize Text Fading and Metal Commemorative Plaque Theft in Ghana

The Commemorative Plaque Industry thrives at the hands of the local craftsmen in Ghana. Techniques, methods, tools, and materials used as handed to them by their previous masters have remained the same over the years. As a result, plaques produced had peculiar problems such as text fading, degrading the actual effect of the plaques. Additionally, metals once widely used for making plaques devoid of text fading in the industry seem to have lost their relevance due to metal plaque theft, rust on metal plaques, and the continuous rise in metal prices. This research uses descriptive, experimental, and case studies of the qualitative research method to examine the problems associated with locally produced commemorative plaques. A total of hundred (100) artisans, including metal scrap dealers, and plaque buyers, were selected for the study. Direct observation and face-to-face interviews were conducted with the local craftsmen, art lecturers and students, scrap dealers, and plaque buyers who were purposively sampled for the study. The study revealed that existing materials like ceramic and aluminium could be integrated innovatively to produce commemorative plaques devoid of text fading;a corrosion-resistant text could be made using anodized or coated metals used in smaller quantities to reduce costs while also making them unattractive for theft and lastly, silicone sealant was found to be a viable option for permanently inscribing text on porcelain bases. The results clarify and underline the necessity to grow the local plaque industry in terms of plaque production as another essential basis to assure high-quality plaques with no text fading that will survive for generations to serve their intended purpose.

Characterization of Kaolin Deposits in Okpella and Environs, Southern Nigeria

Kaolin is one of the most important industrial minerals whose application is dependent on its structure and chemical composition. This study makes an attempt to explore and determine the origin of kaolin deposits within and around Okpella, as well as to investigate the mineralogical and chemical compositions using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) method. These were carried out with the intention of determining the most suitable applications for the clay mineral. It was observed that major phases in the clay samples from the three different deposits are kaolinite, microcline, illite/mica, plagioclase/albite and quartz. These phases were observed in varied percentages. Samples from Ajego 2 show a marked absence of kaolinite but contain high concentration of plagioclase feldspar and quartz which permit its usage in the production of glass and iron industries. Further, the samples from Ajego 1 contain by far the highest concentration of kaolinite, while the samples from Anegha consist of kaolinite, a mixed layer of illite/mica, plagioclase, alkali feldspars, and albite which is necessary for producing mullite fibers in ceramic matrix at a temperature of around 1400°C and it is suitable in pigment production. The XRF result for Ajego2 and Anegha samples has Silica composition of 51.847 wt%, 32.540 wt% and 37.295 wt% respectively and an alumina content of 14.962 wt%, 29.834 wt% and 20.227 wt% respectively. The trace amount of some of the oxides such as K2O, TiO2, Fe2O3 and SnO2 can help in the beneficiation process.

African mahogany, one of the world’s most valuable timber species is threatened by over-exploitation in natural forests and failure of plantations due to attacks by the shoot borer Hypsipyla robusta. Mixed-species plantations has been reported to be an effective component of integrated pest management of major pest in other crops;but there is very limited empirical data on its use for managing Hypsipyla in mahogany mixed stands in West Africa. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of mixed-species stands as management intervention, on the growth of Khaya grandifoliola and Khaya ivorensis in relation to Hypsipyla robusta attack in a 10 ha experimental plantation in the wet evergreen forest type in Ghana. Khaya grandifoliola recorded faster growth than Khaya ivorensis in this forest type though the later naturally grow in this forest type while the former is introduced from the dry forest. Two years after planting, diameter and height growth were greater in the mixed-species stand than the pure stands for K. grandifoliola and K. ivorensis. Hypsipyla damage was less in the mixed stands of both K. grandifoliola and K. ivorensis compared to the pure stands, with the 20% and 10% Khaya mixed stand recording the lowest attack in both species. It can be recommended that mixed stands of the two Khaya species at 20% or lower Khaya density might be ideal for reducing the levels of Hypsipyla attack in this type of forest.
