Background:Ske.etal muscle.energetics decline with age,and physical activity(PA)has been shown to offset the.e declines in older ***,many studies reporting the.e effects we.e based on self-reported PA or structured e.ercise ***,we.examined the associations of acce.erometry-measured and self-reported PA and se.entary behavior(SB)with ske.etal muscle.energetics and explored the.extent to which PA and se.entary behavior would attenuate the associations of age with muscle ***:As part of the Study of Muscle,Mobility and Aging,enrolled older adults(n=879),810(age=76.4±5.0 years old,mean±SD;58%women)had maximal muscle oxidative capacity measured ex vivo via high-resolution re spirometry of permeabilized myofibers(maximal oxidative phosphorylation(maxOXPHOS))and in vivo by ^(31)phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy(maximal adenosine triphosphate(ATP_(max))).Acce.erometry-measured se.entary behavior,light activity,and moderate-to-vigorous PA(MVPA)we.e assessed using a wrist-worn ActiGraph GT9X over 7 ***-reported se.entary behavior,MVPA,and all PA we.e assessed with the Community Healthy Activities Model Program for Seniors(CHAMPS)*** regression models with progressive covariate adjustments evaluated the associations of se.entary behavior and PA with muscle.energetics,as well as the attenuation of the age/muscle.energetics association by MVP A and se.entary *** a sensitivity analysis,we also examined activPAL-measured daily step count and time spent in se.entary behavior and their associations with muscle ***:e.ery 30 min/day more of ActiGraph-measured MVPA was associated with 0.65 pmol/(s×mg)higher maxOXPHOS and 0.012 mM/s higher ATP_(max)after adjusting for age,site/technician,and sex(ped with maxOXPHOS or ATP_(max).Meanwhile.every 30 min/day spent in ActiGraph-measured se.entary behavior was associated with 0.39 pmol/s×mg lower maxOXPHOS and0.

25 Years of sensory drive： the.evidence and its watery bias

It has been 25years since the formalization of the Sensory Drive hypothesis was published in the American Naturalist （1992）. Since then, the.e has been an explosion of re.earch identifying its utility in contributing to our understanding of inter- and intra-specific variation in sensory systems and signaling properties. The main te.et of Sensory Drive is that environmental characteristics will influence the.evolutionary trajectory of both sensory （de.ecting capabilities） and signaling （de.ectable features and behaviors） traits in predictable directions. We review the accumulating evidence in 154 studies addressing the.e questions and categorized their approach in terms of testing for environmental influence on sensory tuning, signal characteristics, or both. For the subset of studies that examined sensory tuning, the.e was greater support for Sensory Drive processes shaping visual than auditory tuning, and it was more prevalent in aquatic than terrestrial habitats. Terrestrial habitats and visual traits we.e the prevalent habitat and sensory modality in the 104 studies showing support for environmental influence on signaling properties. An additional 19 studies that found no supporting evidence for environmental influence on signaling traits we.e all based in terrestrial ecosystems and almost exclusively involved auditory signals. Only 29 studies examined the comple.e coevolutionary process between sensory and signaling traits and we.e dominated by fish visual communication. We discuss biophysical factors that may contribute to the visual and aquatic bias for Sensory Drive.evidence, as well as biotic factors that may contribute to the lack of Sensory Drive processes in terrestrial acoustic signaling systems.

The observed magnetic data for two isosce.es tricobalt(II) comple.es have been successfully analyzed, considering the axial distortion around each cobalt(II) ion, the local spin-orbit coupling, the anisotropic exchange interactions, and the intermolecular exchange interactions. The comple.es each contains two types of octahedral high-spin cobalt(II) ions (CoA and CoB) in the shape of an isosce.es triangle (CoA1–CoB–CoA2), and the contribution of the orbital angular momentum is significant. The.exchange interaction between the CoA and CoB ions is practically negligible (J = ~ 0), whe.eas the interaction between the CoA1 and CoA2 ions is ferromagnetic (J’ > 0) for both comple.es.

In this paper, we analyze variation in spectral reflectance and color pattern among populations to demonstrate dra-matic divergence between four distinct morphs of the mimic poison frog Ranitomeya imitator. We also analyze ge.etic diver-gence in d-loop mtDNA sequences between populations. We then use coalescent-based simulations to demonstrate that the high le.els of observed phenotypic divergence are not consistent with le.els of ge.etic divergence.expected under neutral drift among populations, implying an important role for se.ection in driving divergence between the.e populations .

Background: The impact of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) on type 2 diabe.es mellitus is thought to result from upper and/or lower gut hormone alterations. evidence supporting the.e mechanisms is incomple.e, in part because of limitations in re.evant bariatric-surgery animal models, specifically the lack of naturally insulin-resistant large animals. With overfeeding, Ossabaw swine de.elop a robust metabolic syndrome, and may be suitable for studying post-surgical physiology. Whether bariatric surgery is feasible in the.e animals with acceptable survival is unknown. Methods: Thirty-two Ossabaws we.e fed a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet to induce obesity and insulin resistance. The.e animals we.e assigned to RYGB (n = 8), RYGB with vagotomy (RYGB-V, n = 5), gastrojejunostomy (GJ, n = 10), GJ with duodenal exclusion (GJD, n = 7), or sham operation (n = 2) and we.e euthanized 60 days post-operatively. Post-operative changes in weight and food intake are reported. Results: Survival to scheduled necropsy among surgical groups was 77%, living an average of 57 days post-operatively. Cardiac arrest under anesthesia occurred in 4 pigs. Greatest weight loss (18.0% ± 6%) and food intake decrease (57.0% ± 20%) occurred following RYGB while animals undergoing RYGB-V showed only 6.6% ± 3% weight loss despite 50.8% ± 25% food intake decrease. GJ (12.7% ± 4%) and GJD (1.2% ± 1%) pigs gained weight, but less than sham controls (13.4% ± 10%). Conclusions: A survival model of metabolic surgical procedures is feasible, leads to significant weight loss, and provides the opportunity to evaluate new interventions and subtle variations in surgical technique (e.g. vagus nerve sparing) that may provide new mechanistic insights.
