Resilience indicators support valuation of estuarine ecosystem restoration under climate change

economic valuation of ecological restoration most often encompasses only the most tangible ecosystem service benefits,thereby omitting many difficult-to measure benefits,including those derived from enhanced reliability of ecosystem *** climate change is likely to impose novel ecosystem stressors,a typical approach to valuing benefits may fail to capture the contribution of ecosystem resilience to sustaining long-term ***,we generally lack predictive probabilistic models that would enable measurement and valuation of ***,alternative measures are needed to complement monetary values and broaden understanding of restoration *** use a case study of Chesapeake Bay restoration(total maximum daily load)to show that ecosystem service benefits that are typically monetized leave critical information *** address these gaps,we review evidence for ecosystem services that can be quantified or described,including changes in harmful algal bloom *** further propose two integrative indicators of estuarine resilience-the extent of submerged aquatic vegetation and spatial distribution of *** aquatic vegetation extent is indicative of qualities of ecosystems that promote positive feedbacks to water *** distributed fish populations reduce risk by promoting diverse responses to spatially heterogeneous *** synthesis and new analyses for the Chesapeake Bay suggest that resilience metrics improve understanding of restoration benefits by demonstrating how nutrient and sediment load reductions will alleviate multiple sources of stress,thereby enhancing the system’s capacity to absorb or adapt to extreme events or novel stresses.

defect detection and repair algorithm for structures generated by topology optimization based on 3d hierarchical fully convolutional network

Customized 3d-printed structural parts are widely used in surgical *** satisfy the mechanical properties and kinematic functions of these structural parts,a topology optimization technique is adopted to obtain the optimal structural layout while meeting the constraints and ***,topology optimization currently faces some practical challenges that must be addressed,such as ensuring that structures do not have significant defects when converted to additive manufacturing *** address this problem,we designed a 3d hierarchical fully convolutional network(FCN)to predict the precise position of the defective *** on the prediction results,an effective repair strategy is adopted to repair the defective structure.A series of experiments is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our *** to the 2d fully convolutional network and the rule-based detection method,our approach can accurately capture most defect structures and achieve 89.88%precision and 95.59%***,we investigate the impact of different ways to increase the receptive field of our model,as well as the trade-off between different defect-repairing *** results of the experiment demonstrate that the hierarchical structure,which increases the receptive field,can substantially improve the defect detection *** the best of our knowledge,this paper is the first to investigate 3d defect prediction and repair for topology optimization in conjunction with deep learning algorithms,providing practical tools and new perspectives for the subsequent development of topology optimization techniques.

Facile fabrication of CdIn2S4/TiO2 heterojunction for enhanced solar light efficient CO2 reduction

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is a promising solution to simultaneously provide renewable chemical fuels and address the greenhouse effect. However, designing practical photocatalysts with advanced architectures remains challenging. Herein, we report the preparation of a novel CdIn2S4/TiO2 binary heterojunction via an in situ solvothermal approach, which exhibits superior photocatalytic activity for sunlight-driven CO2 reduction. The CdIn2S4/TiO2 composites exhibit significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance for CO2 reduction compared to unmodified TiO2. Among them, the 3% CdIn2S4/TiO2 composite has optimal CO and CH4 evolution rates of 18.32 and 1.03 mu molddle dot>g(-1)ddle dot>h(-1), respectively. The yield of CO is 4.7 times higher than that of pristine TiO2. This improved photocatalytic activity of the CdIn2S4/TiO2 heterostructure can be attributed to its large surface area, extended light absorption range and high separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, which are supported by the results of photoluminescence spectroscopy and the photoelectrochemical measurements. Moreover, the photocatalytic mechanism based on the binary CdIn2S4/TiO2 heterojunction is proposed and separation process of photogenerated electron-hole pairs is discussed. In brief, we aim to provide insights into the application of TiO2 in energy conversion processes through the construction of heterogeneous junctions.

To the editor:Hereditary severe insulin resistance syndrome(H-SIRS)shows a wide and variable clinical spectrum and results in severe complications in the endocrinological and cardiovascular *** treatments are recommended to control hyperglycemia in H-SIRS,including dietary intervention,insulin therapy,insulin sensitization,and recombinant human insulin-like growth factor-1(rhIGF-1)administration.[1]However,the heterogeneous etiology of H-SIRS leads to poor glycemic control in patients with different mutations,requiring multiple antihyperglycemic *** study described two cases diagnosed with H-SIRS and the treatment effect of multi-drug therapy and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor(SGLT2i)monotherapy.

Performance analysis of deep borehole heat exchangers for decarbonization of heating systems

Meeting the climate change mitigation targets will require a substantial shift from fossil to clean fuels in the heating *** pumps with deep borehole exchangers are a promising solution to reduce *** the thermal behavior of deep borehole exchangers(dBHes)ranging from 1 to 2 km was analyzed for various heat flow profiles.A strong correlation between thermal energy extraction and power output from dBHes was found,also influenced by the heating profile *** operating time over the year typically resulted in higher energy production,while shorter one yielded higher average thermal power output,highlighting the importance of the choice of heating strategy and system design for optimal performance of *** breaks in operation for regenerating the borehole,for example,with waste heat,proved to be favorable for the performance yielding an overall heat output close to the same as with continuous extraction of *** results demonstrate the usefulness of deep boreholes for dense urban areas with less available *** the heat production from a single dBHe in Finnish conditions ranges from half up to even a few GWh a year,the technology is best suitable for larger heat loads.

Converting TRex-RGB green-channel data to 557.7 nm auroral intensity:Methodology and initial results

The recently deployed Transition Region explorer(TRex)-RGB(red-green-blue)all-sky imager(ASI)is designed to capture“true color”images of the aurora and *** the 557.7 nm green line is usually the brightest emission line in visible auroras,the green channel of a TRex-RGB camera is usually dominated by the 557.7 nm *** this rationale,the TRex mission does not include a specific 557.7 nm imager and is designed to use the RGB green-channel data as a proxy for the 557.7 nm *** this study,we present an initial effort to establish the conversion ratio or formula linking the RGB green-channel data to the absolute intensity of 557.7 nm auroras,which is crucial for quantitative uses of the RGB *** illustrate two approaches:(1)through a comparison with the collocated measurement of green-line auroras from the TRex spectrograph,and(2)through a comparison with the modeled green-line intensity according to realistic electron precipitation flux measurements from low-earth-orbit satellites,with the aid of an auroral transport *** demonstrate the procedures and provide initial results for the TRex-RGB ASIs at the Rabbit Lake and Lucky Lake *** RGB response is found to be *** conversion ratios or formulas between RGB green-channel data and the green-line auroral intensity are given and can be applied immediately by TRex-RGB data *** methodology established in this study will also be applicable to the upcoming SMILe ASI mission,which will adopt a similar RGB camera system in its deployment.

This paper theoretically studies the impurity states and the effects of impurity concentration and configuration on the optical,electrical,and statistical properties of CdSe nanoplatelets(NPLs).An image charge-based model of electron-impurity interaction is *** charge-carrier energy spectra and corresponding wave functions depending on the impurity number and configuration are *** electron binding energies are calculated for different NPL *** is shown that the image charge-based interaction potential that arises due to the dielectric constants mismatch is much stronger than the interaction potential that does not take such a mismatch into ***,it is demonstrated that the binding energies are increasing with the number of *** calculate the canonical partition function using the energy levels of the electron,which in turn is used to obtain the mean energy,heat capacity,and entropy of the non-interacting electron *** thermodynamic properties of the non-interacting electron gas that depend on the geometric parameters of the NPL,impurity number,configuration,and temperature are studied.
