Corrosion resistance of powder injection moulded titanium in physiologic serum and artificial saliva

Most of dental implants are made from titanium or titanium based ***, one of the drawback of such implants is high cost due to the technological difficulties in casting method or *** this work, powder injection moulding（PIM） method has been used in order to explore lower cost implants without minimising the biocorrosion resistance of the *** resistance of titanium specimens, produced by powder injection moulding method（PIM-Ti）, in physiologic serum and artificial saliva was *** pure bulk Ti（CP-Ti） was used as control *** oxidation was also carried out to both PIMTi and CP-Ti *** and corrosion resistance were investigated using microhardness, X-ray diffraction（XRD）, scanning electron microscopy（SeM） and potentiodynamic polarization *** microstructure of PIM-Ti samples contained porosity as compared to CP-Ti control *** of PIM-Ti samples varied with varying applied load whereas it was free from applied load for CP-Ti control *** measurements and SeM analysis revealed that corrosion behaviour of PIM-Ti was reasonably as good as CP-Ti both in as-produced and oxidized conditions in physiologic serum and artificial saliva in spite of its porous structure.

Assessment of cardiac function in absence of congenital and acquired heart disease in patients with Down syndrome

Background:extra genetic material in patients with Down syndrome(DS)may affect the function of any organ *** evaluated cardiac functions using conventional tissue Doppler and two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography in patients with DS in the absence of congenital and acquired heart disease in ***:A total of 115 patients with DS between 6 and 13 years of age with clinically and anatomically normal heart and 55 healthy children were included in this cross-sectional *** was diagnosed by a karyotype *** with mosaic type were not included in this *** and diastolic functions were evaluated by ***:Pulsed waved Doppler transmitral early/late inflow velocity(e/A),tissue Doppler mitral annular early/late diastolic peak velocity(ea/Aa),transtricuspid e/A and tricuspid valve annulus ea/Aa,pulmonary venous Doppler systolic/diastolic(S/D)wave ratio were lower in patients with Down syndrome than in the control group(P=0.04,P=0.001,Pespectively).Mitral and tricuspid annular ea were lower in patients with DS(Pe right and left ventricular myocardial performance indexes were higher in patients with DS than in the controls(Pey had significantly higher left ventricular mass,ejection fraction,the mitral annular plane systolic excursion ***,the Down syndrome group compared with the controls had a lower strain values examined by two-dimensional longitudinal speckle-tracking strain ***:These findings suggest conventional tissue Doppler and two-dimensional longitudinal speckletracking strain echocardiography were useful methods of investigating ventricular function and identifying a higher incidence of biventricular dysfunction in patients with Down syndrome compared with the healthy controls.

Cementum is the outer-, mineralized-tissue covering the tooth root and an essential part of the system of periodontal tissue that anchors the tooth to the bone. Periodontal disease results from the destructive behavior of the host elicited by an infectious biofilm adhering to the tooth root and left untreated, may lead to tooth loss. We describe a novel protocol for identifying peptide sequences from native proteins with the potential to repair damaged dental tissues by controlling hydroxyapatite biomineralization. Using amelogenin as a case study and a bioinformatics scoring matrix, we identified regions within amelogenin that are shared with a set of hydroxyapatite-binding peptides （HABPs） previously selected by phage display. One 22-amino acid long peptide regions referred to as amelogenin-derived peptide 5 （ADP5） was shown to facilitate cell-free formation of a cementum-like hydroxyapatite mineral layer on demineralized human root dentin that, in turn, supported attachment of periodontal ligament cells in vitro. Our findings have several implications in peptide-assisted mineral formation that mimic biomineralization. By further elaborating the mechanism for protein control over the biomineral formed, we afford new insights into the evolution of protein-mineral interactions. By exploiting small peptide domains of native proteins, our understanding of structure-function relationships of biomineralizing proteins can be extended and these peptides can be utilized to engineer mineral formation. Finally, the cementomimetic layer formed by ADP5 has the potential clinical application to repair diseased root surfaces so as to promote the regeneration of periodontal tissues and thereby reduce the morbiditv associated with tooth loss.

Cost effective filamentous phage based immunization nanoparticles displaying a full-length hepatitis B virus surface antigen

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the major causes of chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. In combating HBV infections, HBV diagnosis and vaccination are therefore critical. The hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) is a key target molecule in developing vaccines and diagnostic systems. To date, although HBsAg has been expressed in bacteria, yeasts and mammalian cells, there are still limitations in the existing ones, which leave the necessity for searching new HBsAg production methods. In this study, a simple phage display-based method was developed to produce the purified full-length HBsAg molecules for further immunization studies. For this purpose, the HBsAg coding gene was cloned into a pCANTAB5e phagemid vector and expressed on the surface of M13 filamentous phages. The HBsAg-expressing phage nanosystem was then used as immunization agent in BALB/cJ mice. The eLISA results for sera obtained from mice immunized with HBsAg-displaying phage particles revealed an immune response against HBsAg. These results demonstrate the potential use of a full-length antigen to be displayed on phages as cost effective adjuvant-free immunization agents as an alternative to the highly purified and more expensive antigens conjugated with carrier molecules.

evaluation of Serum Trace elements and Vitamin Levels in Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Single Centre experience from Turkey

Aim: To determine levels of serum trace elements and vitamins, and to find out possible correlations between these elements and vitamins with thyroid function tests and thyroid autoantibody levels in patients having Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT). Methods: The study included 51 premenauposal women with untreated HT, aged 18 to 56 years without any known chronic diseases or chronic medicine usage, and 27 healthy premenauposal women aged 19 to 42 years old. Trace elements (selenium, zinc, copper, iron levels) and vitamins [A, e, B12, 25-OH-D, 1,25(OH)2D and folic acid levels] were evaluated in patient and control groups. Results: Consequently, serum trace elements and vitamin B12 levels did not significantly differ in patients with HT and control group. Thyroid functioning tests and autoantibody levels did not show any correlation with the levels of trace elements, vitamin A, vitamin e and 25-OH vitamin D. A correlation was detected between vitamin B12 and Anti thyroid peroxidase levels. Conclusion: The negative correlation between vitamin B12 and Anti thyroid peroxidase levels may demonstrate the necessity to screen the patients with HT for atrophic gastritis. We believe that more comprehensive studies with larger sample sizes are needed in which patients are randomized according to their nutritional status.
