A Florida wastewater treatment facility studied how Simultaneous Nitrification Denitrification (SND) coupled with traditional nitrogen removal would be used to meet the state’s current advanced wastewater treatment nutrient criterion. This study examined the effect of these combined processes on the fate and transport of the nitrogen species during the treatment process. The effectiveness of nitrogen removal within the full scale sequential batch reactor system (SBR) and the extent of SND compared to nitrification and denitrification in the nitrogen removal process was also evaluated. Finally, the overall performance of the municipal wastewater treatment facility utilizing these combined processes was evaluated. Overall, this application reduced the total nitrogen to almost 6% of the permitted concentration of 3.0 mg/l. The combination of both processes also resulted in an actual ?concentration 93.7% lower than the acceptable theoretical ?concentration, which also resulted in effluent Total Inorganic Nitrogen nearly 80% lower than the permitted 3.0 mg/l effluent concentration. Further, the process produced a composite Total Nitrogen concentration that was 74% lower than the permitted concentration. This coupling of SND with traditional nitrogen removal resulted in a highly effective process to reduce nitrogen in the municipal wastewater effluent which is also attractive for potential implementation due to the low cost expenditure incurred in its utilization.

This work provides insights on waterpipe tobacco and waterpipe charcoal as potential sources of environmental toxicants. Selected harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) from ten U.S. commercial waterpipe tobacco filler products (before and after electric heating) and five waterpipe charcoal products (before and after burning) were investigated. The differences in quantities of HPHCs between the evaluated products appear to be affected by raw material properties and/or the manufacturing processes involved in product production. Trace metal quantities in waterpipe tobacco and charcoal products were observed after heating or burning conditions compared to unheated or unburned conditions, which could impact the environment through the generation of toxic tobacco product waste. This study demonstrates that waterpipe tobacco and waterpipe charcoal contain substantial quantities of benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) and trace metals (i.e., selenium, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, nickel) before use and that extensive and varied changes in trace metal quantities take place as a result of heating, and more studies are needed to estimate the magnitude of the environmental impact of waterpipe tobacco use.

Background:Oral anti-coagulants(OAC)are the intervention for the prevention of stroke,which consistently improve clinical outcomes and survival among patients with atrial fibrillation(AF).The main purpose of this study is to identify problems in OAC utilization among hospitalized patients with AF in ***:Using data from the Improving Care for Cardiovascular Disease in China-Atrial Fibrillation(CCC-AF)registry,guideline-recommended OAC use in eligible patients was ***:A total of 52,530 patients with non-valvular AF were enrolled from February 2015 to December 2019,of whom 38,203 were at a high risk of stroke,9717 were at a moderate risk,and 4610 were at a low *** admission,only 20.0%(6075/30,420)of patients with a diagnosed AF and a high risk of stroke were taking *** use of pre-hospital OAC on admission was associated with a lower risk of new-onset ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack among the diagnosed AF population(adjusted odds ratio:0.54,95%confidence interval:0.43-0.68;Pwas 45.2%(16,757/37,087)in eligible patients with high stroke risk and 60.7%(2778/4578)in eligible patients with low stroke *** utilization in patients with high stroke risk on admission or at discharge both increased largely over time(all Pltivariate analysis showed that OAC utilization at discharge was positively associated with in-hospital rhythm control strategies,including catheter ablation(adjusted odds ratio[OR]11.63,95%confidence interval[CI]10.04-13.47;Plectronic cardioversion(adjusted OR 2.41,95%CI 1.65-3.51;Plusions:In hospitals participated in the CCC-AF project,>70%of AF patients were at a high risk of *** poor performance on guideline-recommended OAC use was found in this study,over time the CCC-AF project has made progress in stroke prevention in the Chinese AF ***

To meet minimum spring flows, water management districts in Florida sought to make both agriculture and urban landscapes water efficient, which includes tree farms. Acer rubrum l. (red maple) trees are endemic to Central Florida and native to the eastern portion of the United States. Urban and suburban expansion has increased use of A. rubrum in landscape plantings and their production in nurseries. In Florida A. rubrum is planted around stormwater retention areas, but also in urban landscapes. To provide a basis for irrigation allocations both during production and in landscapes, daily actual evapotranspiration (ETA) for three red maple trees were measured with weighing lysimeters, beginning with rooted cuttings and continuing until trees averaged 8 m in height. Empirical models were derived to calculate ETA based on crown horizontal projected area or trunk caliper, adjusted daily by changes in reference evapotranspiration (ETo). water use efficiency, based on carbon sequestered in above ground wood mass, was calculated at the end of five growing seasons. Average ETA to produce these maples was 29,107 l over 4.75 years, with an average water use efficiency of 1 kg dry mass of wood per 709 l of water lost by transpiration.

The aim of this study was to discriminate organic from conventional orange juice based on chemical elements and data mining applications.A comprehensive sampling of organic and conventional oranges was carried out in Borborema,state of Sao Paulo,*** fruits of the variety Valencia(Citrus sinensis(l.)Osbeck)budded on Rangpur lime(Citrus limonia Osbeck)were *** chemical elements were determined in 57 orange samples grown in organic and conventional *** order to classify these samples,data mining techniques(Support Vector Machine(SVM)and Multilayer Perceptron(MlP))were combined with feature selection(F-score and chi-squared).SVM with chi-squared had a better performance compared with the other techniques because it reached 93.00% accuracy using only seven chemical components(Cu,Cs,Zn,Al,Mn,Rb and Sr),and correctly classified 96.73% of the samples grown in an organic system.

AIM： To investigate the role of small intestinal carcinoid tumor-derived fibrotic mediators, TGFβ1 and CTGF, in the mediation of fibrosis via activation of an ＂intestinal＂ stellate cell. METHODS： GI carcinoid tumors were collected for Q RT-PCR analysis of CTGF and TGFβ1. Markers of stellate cell desmoplasia were identified in peritoneal fibrosis by immunohistochemistry and stellate cells cultured from fresh resected fibrotic tissue. CTGF and TGFβ1 were evaluated using quantitative tissue array profiling （AQUA analysis） in a GI carcinoid tissue microarray （TMA） with immunostaining and correlated with clinical and histologically documented fibrosis. Serum CTGF was analyzed using a sandwich ElISA assay. RESUlTS： Message levels of both CTGF and TGFβ1 in SI carcinoid tumors were significantly increased （〉 2-fold, P 〈 0.05） versus normal mucosa and gastric （non-fibrotic） carcinoids. Activated stellate cells and markers of stellate cell-mediated fibrosis （vimentin, desmin） were identified in histological fibrosis. An intestinal stellate cell was immunocytochemically and biochemically characterized and its TGFβ1 （10-7M） initiated CTGF transcription response （〉 3-fold, P 〈 0.05） demonstrated. In SI carcinoid tumor patients with documented fibrosis, TMA analysis demonstrated higher CTGF immunostaining （AQUA Score： 92 ± 8, P 〈0.05）, as w.l. as elevated TGFβ1 （90.6 ± 4.4, P 〈 0.05）. Plasma CTGF （normal 12.5 ± 2.6 ng/ml） was increased in SI carcinoid tumor patients （31 ± 10 ng/ml, P 〈 0.05） compared to non-fibrotic GI carcinoids （〈 15 ng/ml） CONClUSION： SI carcinoid tumor fibrosis is a CTGF/ TGFβl-mediated stellate cell-driven fibrotic response. The delineation of the biology of fibrosis w.l. facilitate diagnosis and enable development of agents to obviate its local and systemic complications.

The rise in “vaping”-associated deaths in the United States raises serious concerns. A justification for some level of risk is that e-cigarettes might provide a “reverse-gateway” from smoking traditional cigarettes to a less-harmful alternative. But are users actually smokers? We developed an electronic on-line survey to gather data regarding e-cigarette usage in a target study population of pharmacy students. The survey was created using Google Forms to collect the responses anonymously. We surveyed medical-savvy healthcare students about their e-cigarette use, and whether or not their healthcare providers were aware of their e-cigarette use. Although nearly one-fourth of a convenience sampling of 134 pharmacy-student respondents (23.9%) reported using e-cigarettes, only 2.0% reported prior regular cigarette use, 28% used cartridges containing nicotine and only 11.2% had tried and wanted to quit. The majority (64.1%) reported that their healthcare providers did not ask about such use, and respondents did not volunteer this information. The results of this pilot survey reveal a significant e-cigarette use among health-aware pharmacy students, and they do not support the notion that the respondents do so to quit smoking. The observation that most of the students’ healthcare providers did not inquire about their e-cigarette use, coupled with the finding that users did not volunteer their vaping behavior, suggests that the information should be included when getting a medical history. Further research is needed to determine what behavioral factors may play a role in this type of decision-making among student healthcare professionals.
